....and if you're a fan of mmos, so should you.
After experiencing the beta last week, Rift is probably not something I'm ever going to play. Like many others, I find it too linear, too much of the same old, same old. I am very happy, however, that others are enjoying the hell out of it.
Why, you ask? Two reasons:
1. The industry really doesn't need yet another failure.
Suits are getting gun shy about investing in mmos as it is. I know some of you are thinking: "Great! The sooner that major companies realize that making clones of WoW is a losing proposition, the better!" But that's not how suits think. If investing in a proven business model isn't working, they sure aren't going to want to invest in an unproven one. Already, much of the innovation and forward-thinking in the industry is left to indie outfits, and we all know how that usually works out. While I doubt that Rift's failure would shut down any mmos already in production, it sure might signal a crib death for more than a few other mmos, one of which might be the very one you're waiting for. Like Trion's very own 'End of Nations'. Which brings me to my next point...
2. Trion seems like they've got their heads on straight.
I almost wonder if Rift wasn't planned as the company's opening salvo, simply because they knew they could find funding for it. If Rift does well, I think we can look forward to games down the road from them that'll be different and innovative. If Rift fails, not so much.
While the success or failure of SWTOR probably means more to the industry than Rift, I'm sure that quite a few execs are going to be watching Rift's bottom line very closely.
Let's hope it does well, for all our sakes.

We will always have eastern games, the only ones who always try to innovate.
Personally,i could care less if the western mmorpg market dies, they haven't made a good game since.....well,a lot of years.
I hope Rift succeeds as well. it is very disappointing to come to this site and see all the bashing before the game even officially launches. Its almost like people want it to fail. Too bad, while Rift doesn't really seem to bring alot of new stuff to the table, it does a very good job of polishing up and improving on existing maechanics and deserves better treatment than its getting, in my opinion, of course...
Oh well. Haters gonna hate , I guess...
Name a recent "innovative" eastern MMORPG.
Don't worry, i'll wait.
I have to agree with the OP about Trion though, they seem to have their heads on straight and I sincerely hope for the success of Rift. It has a ton of potential as well.
.. But in a good way.
While I don't think Rift will level the playing field by garnering millions of players, I do think that it will be popular enough to sustain istelf, make imrpovements, and slowly attract more and more players.
Aion,flight pvp.
FFXIV,player driven economy, gatherers and crafters are classes, just like warriors and mages.
Tera,no auto-aiming.
Recent western mmos,AoC,War,Lotro, all the same crap.
I may think the game is not my cup of taste, but I hope it does good.

No auto-aiming?
Age of Conan. Tabula Rasa. Auto Assault.
Aion is all you have? Really? Another quest based MMO? Quest quest quest quest until the mid 30's, grind. Then roam around and gank. You can PvP on the Z-axis now
{Mod Edit}
.. But in a good way.
Aion has flight pvp, that is new.
Age of conan combat is a lie,and casters don't have anything new.
Tabula rasa is from NCSOFT,lol.
In Tera you have to aim your skills and spells, another innovative mmorpg.
FFXIV,player driven economy, you can play gatherers and crafters as real classes, just like the warriors and mages.
There is no way you can argue this, the eastern market trys to innovate, the western market keeps making wow clones.
{Mod Edit}
Holding up FFXIV as a model of anything other than crappiness is not supporting your cause, dude. Not to mention that the original SWG already did that, and much better, I might add.
Let's not have this turn into an east vs. west argument, ok?
Playing: FFXIV, EVE
AoC new Melee system, partly voiced over
Warhammer : Public Quests
LoTRO : Phasing,Achievements
Aion,FFXIV,Tera all the same asain grindfest
see how that works both ways?
I never said it was a good game,it's a extremely niche game.
But it proves my point, eastern mmos try to innovate, western mmos are always trying to copy wow,and fail miserably.
I feel the opposite. Even if I liked Rift in the slightest I would want it to fail due to the fact that it's completely unoriginal and made of a formula that has been for over 10 years now. If it was to succeed which is likely, then other companies might follow in their footsteps and release more and more clones of the behemoth. I don't want that.
Still,it's something not made 40000 times like ALL the western wow clones,im sorry, mmos.
Then you know that Trion made Rift based on successful concepts and features from past successful games? This could be a good thing. Sure, it may send the "innovation" idea (which, unfortunately, still means nothing) back to the Dark Ages, but at least we may go back to products that are solid.
YES!!! WHY NOT!!!
Lets take more jobs away from the western world and give them to Asia!
PLAYING: NOTHING!!!
PLAYED:FFXI, LotRO, AoC, WAR, DDO, Megaten, Wurm, Rohan, Mabinogi, RoM
WAITING FOR: Dust 514
Yet you bought your Asian made laptop at WalMart, you real Amurican you.
Again, flight PvP is all you have, which like I said before, is sad. Aion was westernized and is as grindy and unimaginative as WoW. Thanks to another poster for rightfully saying CoH/V had "Flight PvP" first.
Age of Conan's "hit checks" for melee is determined by your aim. You can also aim your spells like that in DDO if you choose, I believe.
Tabula Rasa is by Destination Games, a subsidiary of NCSoft located in the United States. Get your facts straight. This was one of the few TRULY innovative games released in the past few years, may it rest in peace :P
TERA is unreleased and developed on a western engine.
FFXIV? You're really digging deep now. Yes FFXIV had a bit of innovation, despite how terrible it was, but a "player driven economy" is hardly innovative. EVE has done this, and done it better.
Western market designs games for the western market. Eastern market designs games for the eastern market. Herp. Derp.
.. But in a good way.
I'm sorry you're blinded by your bias that East > West, but you're actually just wrong.
Your so called "Flight PvP" was led by about 5 years by City of Heroes. A player driven economy with gatherers and crafters as classes was done by Vanguard (if you don't count UO which was classless, but meets the criteria), and it also had a completely different non-combat class. Sadly yes, no auto-aiming has already been mentioned.
The fact is Eastern developers themselves have admitted that their development style is stagnant and uninspired; needing a major overhaul to ensure it has a brighter future. While I admit pretty much all MMO releases have been crap (especially recently), there really is no use dividing them into Eastern or Western and saying one has been better than the others. If you did, however, talking points would not be that Eastern MMOs are innovative and "the future". It would be more like Eastern MMOs don't even understand basic UI design.
So the wings in Aion stop it from being just another asian grindfest?
Wow! I cannot believe you just used FF XIV as an example in your defense. A game so innovative that their own fanbse just doesn't get it and voted in a recent poll, for the game to be completely overhauled and made into a more storyline based, user friendly MMO.
If you're gonna bring Tera and its combat to the table, then I'll bring Guild Wars 2 with its; dynamic quest chains, action orientated combat & server v server v server PvP.
As for the OP's thoughts... I also hope Rift suceeds but if it doesn't they only have themselves to blame, not the consumer.
I could care less if they lose their jobs,it's their fault for trying to copy wow.
I play eastern games because they are good, innovative and competitive, not because they are eastern.
I think I just heard this thread crash.
Yeah, this forum is so toxic at the moment, that any thread turns into a flamewar, often with little to no bearing on the original post.
While I agree with an earlier poster that Trion will have only itself to blame if Rift fails, the mmo community needs to take a gander at itself in the mirror. It ain't a pretty pic.
Playing: FFXIV, EVE
Rift will succeed, it just won't excel. It'll make trion some money but it won't be remembered in 20 years as 'one of the biggest games in history'. It's decent but doesn't do enough to differentiate itself from other releases and, indeed, existing games. It's kind of like the medal of honor of the MMO world.
I guess that all depends on your definition of excel. These days though, in most people's eyes, that means +6 Million subscribers, which before WoW was unheard of.
I hope it does well and makes a healthy profit, regardless of how fun or innovative Rift is, Trion seems like a good enough company.
Here's to them not being acquired by Activision. Or Sony.
.. But in a good way.
