Carebear going Rogue; from themepark to FFA Loot PvP

chriselchrisel Member UncommonPosts: 990

Hey-ho all!

I have played themepark MMO's since I first played Anarchy Online at it's release in 2001. As the years has gone by, I have been "in need" more & more of meaningful PvP; and by that I don't mean for the gear only. I really like the "autotarget" MMO's as if offer a playstyle I feel I am good at. Still, I was about every day looking into these forums here on a search for a MMO that was more than a "shell".

So one day I decided to give an MMOFPS with Full PvP and Free Loot For All a chance. The name of the game is not important here, and I will not reveal it since I dont want this thread be moved away from this forum. Beside, the game itself isn't what I want this thread to be about; I want it to be about how my this new game have been to me and what I now feel about them games.

After downloading & installing it's trial, I had very low expectations to the game. I was considering game to be packed with "kiddies" full of grief, and that I would be tossed around like a rag doll (way) too often. The life in that world is harsh, by all means, and the game is not newbie friendly, but oh boy what a fresh breath it is! For the very first time I am feeling "alive" inside an MMO world. There is such a tension in me, a huge excitement when I am out alone, trying to get skills or grind me some income; cause I have NO idea what waits me around the next corner on the other side of the hill.

I have, ofc, been ganked, robbed repeatedly, but what surprises me most, is that many of those who did this to me, actually returned (some) of the gear, or even gave me better than they looted after I enganged into conversation to them. Actually, the very first time I was killed, I came into talk with the dude. Coincidentially he was living in the same city as I do. It all turned out that he visit the restaurant I am working at, frequently, and after he gave me a mount, some gold & gear, I told him to come by & offered hi a discount. We shared Skype adresses too. This was the very first time I have "befriended" someone that killed me ingame. This was definately the most weird way I ever befriended anyone in my MMO career!

Surprisingly enough, this was not a 1 time incident; no, actually I have befriended several of those who have ganked me (& robbed me). If I had would to tip what would be worst in such a game before I tried it, I would definately say the community. I am now ashamed to think so bad, cause it has turned out that the community is absolutely top notch. There are ofc griefers, like in all other games, but in a full pvp game you can at least "teach" them a lesson.

Another part I found very appealing with this game, not sure if that goes for every FFA pvp loot games, is that the community mainly consists of quite mature players. I have yet to meet anyone below 18.

I must add that games like this is definately not for ragers, cause they would not last long. But I always considred myself a "carebear" with love for fair pvp, and I was very sceptical to such a game, as I was a bit worried I would become a "rager" myself. I am pleased to say I am able to get into the community quite well. I do care about loosing my gear when I am killed, but I am taking it alot better than I would ever dream of.

Before I took a look into this FFA loot PvP game, I was having several of subsriptions in other MMO's. All those are cancelled. I am unsure if I ever will be able to go back to a themepark MMO. Even though I used to love them so much...

10 years of MMO gaming and I thought there was no more fresh & new excitement for me. I could'nt be more wrong.

Very nice write up! Glad you are having fun and was actually in the same boat as you, being a PvE player since forever and was scared I would be a rage quitter in a FFA full loot PVP game but turns out not at all. Sadly, I still haven't found a game that is enough polished with this ruleset for me to hang onto for the long haul. Waiting hopefully for World of Darkness.

You actually prove that social interactions in a mmo is very important, who knew! ;)

Thats what i want, a game with social PvP like i had in star wars galaxies, but as yet to no avail...

Fallen Earth is not full loot. Though I do love it anyway.

"Never met a pack of humans that were any different. Look at the idiots that get elected every couple of years. You really consider those guys more mature than us? The only difference between us and them is, when they gank some noobs and take their stuff, the noobs actually die." - Madimorga

I'm playing Fallen Earth at the moment. But i find it very isolated and completed solo orientated. Which is a shame, because it makes me not want to play..i don't play MMO's to play solo all the time. No one groups and i have yet to see a group: there is no need for one. It's a very lonely place and the setting doesn't justify that by itself.

So, i'm willing to goto a less sandbox game just to have people to play alongside.

Sounds like Darkfall to me but yes we need more games that provide this sort of gaming experience, most players don't realise it but they'd prefer it compared to a standard themepark game in the long run. <<< Used to be themepark player myself for many years.

  • chriselchrisel Member UncommonPosts: 990

If anyone are interested in where I am having this experience, PM me, or maybe you would like to join up? I am still in the newbie area, digging into the game mechanics, and even this somewhat "idle" approach is exciting; cause there are some notorious players (newbie killers) around most of the time.

I have joined a very nice guild, with mature & helpful members. The guild was founded just after my arrival (not me who is leader), and we are welcoming new people as long as they seem able to bahave :)

The thing is, that such games like this, is really "the real" deal. I am having my doubts how good I will be with the FPS aiming since it's 10 years since I used to play FPS games, but I still I belive & hope I will be able to compete on a satisfactory level. What this exact game offers beside it's FFA loot & PvP, is a game mechanism that makes you very early able to join raids and killing mobs with other players that has played the game for many many months. Me doing PvE with players that had been playing for 6mnths to a year? Unthinkable. This was very suprising to me; going out playing with them, just after a day into the game. This is exactly what I think "MMO's" are about; more ways to interact early with the community: whether you choose going solo or joining others.

It will definately be very hard for me to look back after this tremendous experience such game(s) offers me. This has been a truly "Eureka" for me. How about you check it out for yourself?

Cheers all. Thank you for taking your time reading all this! =)

That was a damn fine read, and I couldn't agree more.  The older I get, the more this appeals to me.  I am waiting to embark on my first Open PvP loot game as well!

Hope my experience is as great as yours sounds!

I really hope that *insert game name here* will be the first game to ever live up to all of its pre-release promises, maintain a manageable hype level and have a clean release. Just don't expect me to hold my breath.

I am still having a blast in the game, even though I have got myself tossed around since I started. Without really knowing it, such a game was exactly what I was in search for. I guess I have lived in denial considering all the rage I was experiencing in WoW; I presumed it would be alot worse in a FFA PvP MMO with full loot. How wrong could I be...

Agreed. I should have elaborated this more, though I thought it might not be needed.

I played MMOs long before WoW, but I can relate to what you mean about the raginess you can experience.  In my younger days, I don't think I was really at a point where I could handle being beaten around on a daily basis.  I wanted to feel like I was a hero (I think Bioware is making a game that is perfectly suited for the late teen years!), I wanted to feel like my character was better than yours, that I was a total - BADASS.

A solid decade of getting raped by rabid little children in Halo has taught me that even when you're on the bottom of the pile, games can still be hella fun.  I have since grown up, and can take the fact that I'm getting my ass kicked.  I can take the fact that your character is more LEET than mine.  That you are just a better player than I am.

Another thing, I used to picture open PvP worlds as a haven for little shit kiddie griefers.  In my defense, this was certainly the case in every PvP server I tried in WoW.  But I have actually found the exact opposite.  The open PvP game I have been trying has been full of mature, kind (outisde of actual PvP), fun-loving and intelligent adults.  That, and it just fits the MMO genre.  What kind of war has soldiers from both sides hanging out somewhere NOT killing each other?

Who knows, maybe in time I will come to tire of getting ganked.  Maybe I will tire of fearing whats on the outskirts of my radar.  Maybe I will find that eventually open PvP degrades into that grief-fest that I once imagined.  But so far, it's just great.

I really hope that *insert game name here* will be the first game to ever live up to all of its pre-release promises, maintain a manageable hype level and have a clean release. Just don't expect me to hold my breath.

What puzzles me alot with my behavior in WoW vs Full PvP W/full loot, is that I really do rage in WoW. I become grumpy in that game, even without playing pvp. But the pvp in WoW really gets the wors outta me. I have no problems with people having better gear than me, nor do I have problems with people having better skills than me either, but I have really big problems behaving in WoW.

To my huge surprise I am blending really well into the type of game I am talking about here, and I have exclusively met people all above age 20 so far. One word for this so far: Fantastic!

haha, I have found that WoW brings out the worst in a variety of people in a variety of ways!

Exactly. Fantastic that I found me something I can accept being killed, ganked, robbed, griefed and so on. Thankfully theres tons of other game mechanism's in this current game that weighs up for all that. Which pretty much speech for itself.

I know what you mean. I know people who get really pissed losing, say, an arena match in WoW (when TBC had just been released, I remember I was doing the same). They start making up excuses, most of the time about the game's balance, even if the class composition of the opposing team is the same as their own team's.

It probably has to do with ego. In WoW, most of the time you know the situation was, in a way, fair, because you play most matches in an environment that could be considered much more balanced than the open world (arena, BGs to some extent). You get the idea the opposing player will think you are a bad player because you lost to his/her team. Most of the time you are also unable to communicate with the player you've been beaten by because they either play on the other faction or on an another server.

Yet I've played Darkfall and some other games with these exact same people and in those games, they don't get angry for dying to a group of gankers or to a single ganker. From this I've concluded it could have something to do with the balance of the PvP situation; does it happen in a balanced environment or not, are the character's equal in strength, etc. In games like these, you simply expect to lose from time to time, and it plays a big part when it comes to the player's mentality, I think.

I've played TONS of MMORPGs, a little bit of Darkfall, EVE, Mortal, WoW, UO(still playing after 13 years), Fallen Earth, Vanguard, I have played them all..

The "sandbox" games are on the right track but are taking the wrong approaches..  It's not that I want the game to be a sandbox, if WoW had Darkfalls combat, I would not be playing Darkfall, I would still be playing WoW as I am a casual gamer, but I stick to games like Darkfall and Fallen Earth cause of the engaging crafting, skill and combat systems.. I don't like to level, I am a roleplayer at heart and I like more "open" worlds and less instances..

One of my complaints about Warhammer: Age of Reckoning was the combat, it should have had real-time combat(think Elder Scrolls: Oblivion) a FPS combat system is what really determines your skills in combat, makes it more immserive, and more engaging, Warhammer Online sells itself as a PVP game, but lacks all the features for it to be one, if it had some FPS combat, no enemy name-tags, blocking and dodging, it would be the greatest MMO ever in my book, but there really is no casual PVP/PVE games out there that take sucjh an approach to combat..

Thus, I play the more hardcore online games..

I could easily play, say, a game like Darkfall with tab targeting (autotarget). It is different games yes, but some people just suck at mouseskills. I feel I can master both so no worries about me personally, but theres lots of people who are totally unable to play FPS and be competetive. I guess the MMO world will offer games with both styles, and yes, I would like playing one.

Well, I am still looking for my first kill in this MMO I am playing... It has been a tough debut so far; only death's upon me and no kills... yet. I am in fact having such a blast that I am considering opening a second accound, dedicated for crafting. Hmm... ;)

Pleased you are having fun and all.  I do find it ironic that you are surprised to find something 'fresh and new' when previously you had confined yourself to playing the same old same old. I do wish more people would try stuff before claiming they don't like it. I also think there is a slim chance that a game that can make PvP appealing to the masses (so not Darkfall MO or any of that cack) could do extremely well. (how you do that is a whole other debate). Hopefully your story will inspire others to go out and try something new. It's a shame that Masthead are starting to look like anther small studio that have great intentions but lack the skill to realise them

I will try explain; my first "meeting" with a full PvP & Free Loot For All MMO was Shadowbane. At that time I tried all releases that came out. (nearly). We were having a really great time in beginning, I remember that; the usual exploration, kill mobs, get some levels etc etc, unti wwe suddenly got ganked by some rogues(?) who could sneak up unto us without being seen. Shockingly I found out that some, or all, of my precious loot & few silver, were gone; I had no idea Shadowbane had this game mechanic, and I sweared that I would never play such a game again.

Now before anyone jumps accusing me for not having done my pre-research of the game; I did'nt bother. And the gaming company behind Shadwobane should be glad, or else they would not had my money. I talked to them 2 who had killed me & my friend, and they were quite rude, and was acting bullish. I decided that Shadowbane was not the place for me.

GPS does not ring a bell for me. Is it EvE?

I had a look at Archage btw, and it looks promising. Time will tell if I will visit that world at it's release. Too early too say.

    Anyways. Back to "my" game:

What a thrill!! Today, I almost found my ingame experience too exciting; it is really taking it's "toll" on me; I am knacked from being on the edge all the time ingame. I jump in my chair every time I turn around and looks into the face of any human mob, thinking; OHNOES! A PK'er!! I wonder if this excitement ever will be gone? It issurely insane; I never ever been experiencing anything alike. Not even in MMO's I was at, at it's first day of release. I think I need a break just to repair my nerves! ;)
