when and how did they become the new standard for gaming?
A: It hasn't.
Agreed. It isn't out yet, there's no sales figures for boxes sold. How do you know it's the next standard? Also MMOs aren't the "standard for gaming." Not even close. MMORPGs are some of the most lacking in creativity and boring games out there (and I play Microsoft Excel Online as a hobby for pete sake).

I think what he meant was. "Why has Rift become the new standard for MMOs?" But I think what he really should have said is, "Why are people so impressed with Rift?" Either way the response to all three of those questions will be nearly the same.

I'm not impressed with rift, far from it. If I had the words to speak how i really felt about it without getting a perma ban they would be here, along with a picture of a steaming pile of you know what.
Rofl new standard of coping older games at best, sorry some of the young kids might think so, but a polished pile of you know what is just a pile of you know what with polish added sorry.
The basic answer is this: It is a finished game. This is one of the first games to be complete at release since probably WoW came out. While there are bugs and polishing still to go...that is true of every MMO no matter how much time a company spends on them. The bugs that might be left in the game currently are so minor that I haven't noticed anything of significance. Whether there is enough content for your average player to last untill the first content expansion...that I dont have the answer to. I do think however, that the game is in good enough shape they will not be spending the first 3 to 6 months post release just trying to finish the game and will insttead be able to concentrate on expanding the game.
While the game does not do a whole lot that would be considered special...what they do they do well and that is what people are reacting to. People have been asking for game companies to finish their games pre-release for a really long time now and by doing so Trion will get a lot of good coverage and a lot of good gaming karma whether people stick to the game long term or not.

A: It hasn't.
B. You can't be a standard when technically you don't exist yet. Once they actually start selling their product, you're more welcome to make assumptions.
No required quests! And if I decide I want to be an assassin-cartographer-dancer-pastry chef who lives only to stalk and kill interior decorators, then that's who I want to be, even if it takes me four years to max all the skills and everyone else thinks I'm freaking nuts. -Madimorga-
I don't think anyone has really said it has. In fact, all I've heard around these forums is how "Rift isn't WoW" and "Rift will never be as good as WoW was". I think your question should really be, when did WoW become the standard for gaming. Using either game as a standard would be stupid. It's okay to compare, but take each game at face value. The both are copies of an earlier concept.
It has´nt, ....... yet, but i think that could be the new standard, but that is a thing that nobody can say.
I can say it won't.
Can you name the current standard for gaming? how about just MMO's? whats the answer? WoW right? will rift beat WoW so soundly that people will somehow see WoW as a thing of the past? Will Rift become the game to beat? Will Rift be the most polished, most populated, most played MMO?
Answers:
I doubt it.

I used to TL;DR, but then I took a bullet point to the footnote.
Rift has everyone wet because it run exactly how its meant to even in beta.
With the addition of the casual gamer to our beloved genre, priorities for MMOs are completely different. A well constructed, POLISHED product is the new standard.
Now if we could only get some of the more innovative developers on this track, we'd be SET.
I really hope that *insert game name here* will be the first game to ever live up to all of its pre-release promises, maintain a manageable hype level and have a clean release. Just don't expect me to hold my breath.
All i can say is that i am having a lot of fun.....
For me the soul system is the Jewel in the crown..
And espescially Invasions make the game so much more fun to play, tough we might grow tired of them to soon... In the end it might be just to much of the same cake... So they need to come up with more dynamic content for the future...
Best MMO experiences : EQ(PvE), DAoC(PvP), WoW(total package) LOTRO (worldfeel) GW2 (Artstyle and animations and worlddesign) SWTOR (Story immersion) TSW (story) ESO (character advancement)
We can't say anything, yet, because the game is still in beta testing.
But I for once would like to know why people are just so excited for this game.
You can say anything you want about the beta and your experience,
The NDA on beta has been lifted ages ago.. There only is an NDA for Alfa testers and their Alfa server experiences... (Alfa is the hardcore test that runs 24/7 behid the schemes of the beta)

It hasn't and nothing. And if I have to read one more Rift thread I'm very likely going to throw my monitor into a wall. Is there NOTHING else to talk about? Have we not YET worn out every possible discussion about Rift? I can't think of ONE thing about that game that hasn't been talked about, picked apart, and put back together over the past couple of months. It's seriously getting old even for a good game.

My initial reaction is to tell you to stop clicking rift threads.... then i realize how true your comments are.
Judged and re-judged and it's not even out yet.
I like Rift but damn... after it releases the whole debate starts over.
A lot of WoW players saw that, I'm thinking mostly children, they have been spamming their game on every forum known to man. They think it's actually going to kill WoW. If you want a good community, don't go there, trust me.
They attracted a lot of WoW players but in return the community itself is nasty now.

Grab a beta key (loads left) and play it in a few days and form your own opinion.
irony... is that full of iron?
Hm, it hasn't and they're not doing anything special.

I think people are largely happy with a game that is releasing in a polished, relatively bug free state. That is a rare thing in mmos.

I think it's just because people here would die if they ever had to share an opinion with the mainstream populace.

Because the soul system has done what other games have tried to do for years and failed in terms of raiding.
Rift allows you to bring the player, not the class.

They made: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BpXoNaiPfT8 that directly attacked WoW.
