Will guildwars 2 be a companion to or killer of aion?

Flame50Flame50 Member Posts: 13

I am really thinking of getting aion, I really like the graphics and I KNOW they do not make the game but I really like the effects that go along, good animations, animated clothing etc. All that stuff just brings the world to life. Id much watch the wind blow my charaters cloak around then watch stiff blurry jerky movements of some MMOs.

In otherwords, I just love atmosphere. However, guildwars 2 is coming out in aprox a year? and it looks to have great graphics and due to guildwars 2 it will be pretty well known. probably more popular than aion though you do see it beside WoW in walmart. However as far as I know guildwars 2 will not be subscription, What I am hoping is that aion keeps recieving updates to keep it on par to GW2 and is not just half dropped to support the newest game in the fashion F2P games do.

Another question somewhat slightly related. Do you think Aion or any other P2P game, feel free to name one will keep getting graphics update? we saw the WoW update with judging on videos seemed more like a gimicky, Buy the game its now has upgraded graphics! even though they are not much better at all except for water.

Most of this stuff matters little but as a avid PC gamer I would dislike investing weeks or months of my time and at minimum 130$ish into a game that will just be left in the dust in a year.

I truly think a large part of the mass appeal of WoW is the fact its been going strong for 6 years and with millions of players It will probably be going strong for another 6, enabling people to pour  years of their lives into the game knowing it will not all disapear in a year.

the graphics are the ONLY thing going for aion.

    TRF - GM - GW2, PS2, WAR, AION, Rift, WoW, WOT....etc...
    Future Crew - High Council. Planetside 1 & 2.

Guild Wars 1/2 can't be the killer to any MMOG simply because it is real MMOG. That, and it doesn't have a subscription fee, therefore it is easy to pick up and play with another MMOG.

While Aion and Guild Wars 2 have the same publisher, it's not the same group of people working on the games.  There is literally no programmer/artist/staff overlap between the two.  What Guild Wars 2 does has no effect on what Aion does.  Also, Aion is popular in Korea, so it should keep going, just like Lineage 2 did (... and still is going, I suppose).

Secondly, to the other person, Guild Wars 1 was not an MMORPG, but Guild Wars 2 definitely is.

GW2 won't kill Aion any more than GW killed Lineage II.  I really think they appeal to two different customer bases.

What I would be concerned over; however, is Tera.

Yup, I still want to play Tera, but I want to play GW2 too. Then I'm gonna wait for Blade and Soul. XD

It IS possible to stay and play many different games you know, but mostly only if they don't have a monthly subscription fee. XD

I never thought Aions graphics were all that great, yes the character models look good but the textures in the game are as bad as wow.

Aion's graphics will not save you from the subscription canceling grind ahead.

GW2 will probably affect Aions player numbers in the west somewhat.

As people have stated you can play both but not everyone have the time for that. I don't think it will be enough to kill the game off here and I think GW2 wont be that popular in the east besides Japan.

I think Guild Wars was pretty popular in Hong Kong, been there once and there was a few posters of it around =

but yea I agree about Aion's graphics, it doesn't even use like 1% of Cryengine 2's potential right now (skill animations and effects look so bad lol), but the 2.5 upgrade seems to explore the CryEngine 3's environment lighting effects a bit more(hope they add more particle effects to skill animations :P)

I thought that described the majority (Not all, just the majority) of MMO players.  :D

I mean, it applies to children, college students, single people with bad jobs, and anybody who doesn't earn a ton of money, but makes up for it with spare time. :)

Me too, but does that make it any less true?  :D

I've always had more money than time since I was about 18... until I became a parent.  Now I don't have money OR time.  Hurts. :)

If u are talking about AION NA/EU the game have like 26 days of life left, everyone is quitting to play rift.

    Neither really. :D

It's going to be a new, innovative MMO. Didn't really think people still played Aion that much.. o_O

If you move away from the mindset 'must play only one MMO at a time', I see it being possible. What forbids me from spending 1 night or 2 in Aion to siege stuff in the Abyss, then 2 or 3 days to play in GW2?

Am I the only one who doesn't see the point to this thread. I mean Aion has been out for ages and the OP is talking about it like it's about to release and is excited to get it. Also why the worry about GW2 effecting Aion. I thought it was a pretty well known fact that Aion died in the Western Market, by becoming yet another punishing grindfest. So how's GW2 going to attract the remainder of the Aion fanclub, when the game will have no compulsory grind. Also Aion still has a legion of fans in Asia (until Tera & Blade & Soul come out) so it doesn't really matter if GW2 is somehow able to outright kill Aion.

No idea how the game will go about doing that though.

I'm sorry, when did they say the GW2 will not be an open world? Can you link the article?

Seeing how Aion is the WoW of korea, this whole thread is pointless.
