actually on steam ff 11 is 9.99, is it worth a shot to give it a 3rd chance?
I'm not sure about that. It's not the same experience it was years ago (since it is very top-heavy at this point), however they are about to make progressing through the game a lot faster than before in the mid-February patch. They are essentially doubling the EXP gain for all monster levels, so you can advance twice as fast, as well as making the Fields of Valor (dailies) system unlimited. They are also making it easier for players to solo/lowman content, which is important for events that are no longer appealing to the majority of players, while there are those who have yet to clear them.
I don't think you can get the same experience we did years ago, but I guess that can be a good thing as well depending on how you look at it.
Also, deleting the characters was like, a 2004 thing. It's a looong time since that happened.
Using LOL is like saying "my argument sucks but I still want to disagree".
My problem when I played, all those years ago, wow, was it really 2004? is that I couldn't find people to play with, everyone either spoke japanese, or was in their own little guild and wouldn't be bothered.
The biggest bottleneck for me back then was the starter area, I must have spent at least 20 hours killing those bunny things and those giant goblin things only to feel that I wasn't really getting anywhere.
I did really like the game though, just got bored being by myself and having super slow progression.
As I started as an EU player during the NA release, I faced the same struggles as you did initially. However, you live in the States so I'm not sure what your problem was there. There was and still is a lot of Japanese, but it's more like a 50/50 nowadays.
If you know what you're doing, getting to level 20 takes like 3-4 hours currently. Now that they're doubling the EXP gain... I don't even know anymore.
Although your traveling options can still be rather limited at the beginning, so that's a downside.

wow, this game has been out for almost 10 years and I buy a fresh copy from steam, you'd think you would have the most recent files, but no, it has to update all 20,000 files..... just like in 2004.
actually, it isn't that bad at all, it's doing about 1k files every 5 mins so I should be done updating in an hour or so. Their timers are way off, gross underestimate

Well, the EXP adjustments are coming in few weeks so it's going to be a bit rough until then.
At least you can make proper before/after comparisons lol.
Almost done downloading.
Although if it is anything like it was before, playOnline has to check every byte in every file and take a thousand years to update everything proper.
We'll see
