MMORPG.com's Managing Editor Jon Wood takes a look through the Way Back Machine to revisit the very first edition of "The List" in the first installment of a new weekend tradition here at MMORPG.com.
We’re starting a new weekend tradition here at MMORPG.com. After realizing that we have a huge library of material built up over the years, and an audience that brings in new readers all the time, we thought it might be fun to jump into our TARDIS / ship flung around the sun / way back machine / transporter accident, head back in time and re-visit some of our old articles. Were we right? Were we wrong? Does it still hold up today? Were we completely full of it?

Damn it! I miss W.I.S.H.! That was going to be an awesome sandbox mmo. It shocked the crap out of everyone when they just up and shut it down.
BOOYAKA!
Yeah, it was ambitious. Think maybe a little bit too ambitious considering the scale of what they wanted to impliment. I'd like to see CCP use their technology on this, and see how far they got. They seem to have shardless working pretty well.
Jon, you didn't mention Microsoft's nordic-flavored Mythica. I was disappointed when they backed out on that one. Ultima X was another one that had a high spot on my watch list.

Gods and heroes are in beta and anounced to be released in 2011.
surprised this wasn't mentioned

which was originally destined, hard to believe now, for the original xbox... but microsoft abandoned it while it was making it's way to beta because "it was taking too long". Microsoft now have a reputation for dumping MMO's like bad apples...
The latest dump was of course Marvel Universe Online which later became Champions Online, seriously you didn't think the game played better with an xbox 360 to PC controller for nothing did you
so Marvel Universe Online and True Fantasy Live Online.
i could mention more, but all i'd be doing is mocking the so called "mmo journalist" who wrote the article who obviously, doesn't know his games or history...
"nothing actually matters, we're just slightly evolved monkeys clinging to a dying piece of rock hurtling through space waiting for our eventual death." - Frankie Boyle, Mock The Week
WIsh was pretty good I Was sad to see it cancelled. UOX (And UO2) Sigh...perhaps one day
Yup, hence the line at the top of the article talking about how things had changed since the original article went up... Please read the article, not just the headlines, before commenting.

About 2 years ago I was in the Beta test for Stargate Worlds. It had promise. One day the game was up and running the next not.
What really happened to to the game company that was developing it?
On a side note. What happened to Starwars Galaxies? I started playing when whe game first came out and it was a great sandbox MMO with tons of pvp, pve and a great social environment. After about 6 months everything changed.
What really happened? Did Lucas Arts hate the game and force SOE to changes? Did SOE have to get approval from Lucas Arts on everything they designed for the game? How much control did Soe have to add new content and story lines?
I feel like I am beating a dead horse for asking about SWG but since this article is looking back on past games I was hoping for an in-depth article on the game. I feel like this is an important subject since Bioware is now developing Kotor. Will this game be another SWG crash and burn?
I read the article and wasn't sure you were talking about the same game. I wonder how much has changed in the game since it was put on hold. I really wonder what kind of crowd would have gathered to play it if it had released in 2007 instead of just now being in beta.
* edit * Except you're not Jon Wood. :-)
I can not remember winning or losing a single debate on the internet.
Imperator is like the only game on that list that really interests me.. Also someone posted a link to True Fantasy Online a MMORPG being developed by Level-5 (Rogue Galaxy, White Knight Chronicles, ect) for the xbox.. Man, i was patiently waiting for that game and i KNOW Level-5 could've delivered (as they delivered a fun semi-MMO online mechanic with WKC) had microsoft gave them more time.. Sadly after that Level-5 sorta stayed away from western publishers.. Omg that game would've been awsome!
Currently Playing:
Rift + Starcraft II + Gears Of War 3 Beta
haven't i already read this same list before?
Guess no one is reading the first two paragraphs. Yes, you have read this list before. This is a rehash to see what if anything has changed (i.e STO finally launching, Gods & Heroes now in beta.)
Perpetual entertainment's Startrek might be better compared to cryptic sto. Unfortunately, sto was handled by people who make super heroes as their main mmo. jeez....

1) No, the Star Trek IP isn't better off where it went... not by a long shot.
2) I fondly remember the WISH beta, and was greatly looking forward to it. It would have been my new home after leaving Ultima Online, but alas it was not to be.

Yeah. I was disappointed when Microsoft backed out of Mythica. Is it just me...or does Microsoft seem to back out of just about every MMO of which they are a part?
Oh boy... I had so high hopes into WISH when the Beta started. To me WISH was Ultima Online in 3D. Damn that it did not got finished. I think it had great potential with a good management.
Stradden:
I understand article in way that they (editors) look in their article archives and bring up games which in moment of writing articles was in BETA or development or near publishing and look promising. In same way, conclusion part for each game inform us what happen to game since that time (time of writing orginal article) up to today.
"After realizing that we have a huge library of material built up over the years, and an audience that brings in new readers all the time, we thought it might be fun to jump into our TARDIS / ship flung around the sun / way back machine / transporter accident, head back in time and re-visit some of our old articles. This week, we’re going to reach back to our very first edition of “the list” that saw yours truly, Managing Editor Jon Wood, cover five MMOs that went through development but were never launched. "
My comment was related mostly to this bolded part.
Lizardbones:
Yes, that is same game. Even game have some interesting concepts (minions, god powers...), its simply outdated, especially for this year when couple of top AAA games come on market. Feeling for game is like you find time capsule from year 2007. For that time game look interesting, but from today's point its simply outdated. Devs still didnt announce payment method but if they expect full retail price and monthly fee for game, then editor have material for "double fail MMO's" article.

I got to play in two of the W.I.S.H. beta events way back when. The point and click system didn't bother me, in fact I didn't even recall it being point and click till I read ths article :-P
Basically anything you saw could be used as a resource. If you saw a tree and had the skill level, you could chop it down. See a rock, mine it, etc. I remember the starting "town" was a simple wooden outpost that looked like an old celtic or pictish wooden fort. I remember visiting one of the larger towns and listening to a GM using the NPC Lord of the town as his Avatar; there were discussions in the croud as to weither or not to trust this guy after some local rumors started. The psyclops race was interesting looking, lots of people were playing them. The wildlife also seemed to move about more "natural" than in other MMO's; they seemed to migrate around with good pathing if I remember correctly.
This was as close to a dream MMO I've ever had the experience of playing, really miss it. I hope to see something simliar come along with a lot of polish.
Top Ten Most Misused Words/Phrases in MMO Industry...
Uh, no. They simply reposted an article that was written two years ago, the first instance of "The List." This is obvious if you read the line: "Today [April 14th, 2009], trapped in a sadistic bout of nostalgia, we take a look at what we consider to be the Top 5 of these games."
By the way, Stradden is Jon Wood.
"Ultima Online is well recognized by many as the father of the modern MMORPG, so it shouldn't be a surprise that the idea of making a second game in the franchise has been kicked around a few times."
Wasn't the origional NWN the father or even Dark Sun online
The first MMO was The Realm by Sierra, not UO. Google it
NWN that AOL was the first MMO
Ultima X would've been my first MMO, had it come out. Oh well, SWG was good for a bit .
If you're only looking at graphical MMOs, there were other games before even that. You can go back to MUDs if you want to stretch the definition of MMO somewhat.
