Hello everyone.. Let me start off by saying this isn't a flame and i do plan on buying Rift (have it preordered) and want it to succeed! But so far i've played a defiant Rogue (Rift Stalker / Shadow / Bard) and a guardian Inquisitor (Inquisitor / Cabalist / Purifer) and both of them play really simular.. I walk up to a mob, hit a skill, and wait 2-3 seconds for it to que up and do dmg.. Which makes the combat extremley boring and repetitive, even for a MMORPG..

So far the bard has been the funnest to play because he can somewhat move around and do combat.. But when i rolled the Inquisitor i was more then a little frustrated with how the dmg dealing cleric class was handled.. Each skill took several seconds to cast and the DoT's didn't do any dmg.. I found myself at lvl 8 dieing to lvl 7 darterbug's in Silverwood starting zone; and that was in 1v1's.. I know this isn't WoW, and i at first i actually enjoyed dieing for once in a MMO.. But i seriously died around 20 times last night; and most were in 1v1's with mobs around my same lvl.. It dosn't help that mobs are usually scattered everywhere and that combat is extremley slow causing mobs to repop and aggro or even stumble across me and aggro.

My next choice would be a warrior.. But i don't even wanna reroll one if it's combat is gonna be simular.. Is there like a combat class that can play while on the move? Anything to make the combat more fun in this game.. I can't imagine pvp being any fun either if i just stand there and cast spells while standing still and letting people whack on me.

Uh... Why would you want to be moving while playing a Warrior? Its attacks are melee range and mobs will always face your way, so there's really no point in moving around. xD

But truth be told, I rolled a Cleric as well as my first class and boy do I regret such decision. Mediocre melee DPS, mediocre spell DPS, and hard to level if you spec support.

But then I decided to try the Warrior! Chose a Paladin/Reaver combo and although it's supposed to be a Tank role, I am often able to reach Gold during Rift events. Maybe that's why I keep dying too... Anyway, Warrior class' gameplay is definitely more engaging than Cleric's. There are several "Doesn't affect Global Cooldown" abilities that are both proc-based and castable that add "Action Points," the combo system for Warriors, and several debuffs as well interrupts, snares, DoTs, and stuns. Overall, much more fun to play than Cleric.

Also just recently started a Rogue class and with Marksman I can shoot Instant Abilities while moving o_o.

Marksman is probably the most mobile soul.

Play a Marksmen/Ranger all my spells are instant cast including my finisher... I never have to stop moving to use abilities....

That's funny, I'm Inquisitor/Sentinel/Purifier and I'm plowing through stuff. Of course, I've never been big on DPS (preferring "slow and steady" to "glass cannon"), so to me, it's "plowing."

Inquisitor is very much like WoW Warlock without the pet.

I've been playing a Marksman/Ranger and if you spec correctly, there is a huge amount of mobility given to your class. However, it's not optimal to move, seeing as you do have several cast time shots.

The Warrior has some mobility as well, but again it's not optimal to really move around a lot.  Only classes that i can see moving would be a duel-wielding warrior, perhaps a correctly speced Rogue with riftblade/bladedancer/assasin, and maybe even a Sabetour/marksman combo.

The game is designed to be a DIKU type game in that it's just mostly hack/slash type action. You basically are supposed to stand there and do your business in one spot or a very limited area.

The toons don't travel very fast on foot unless you have one of the few classes that get a speed buff or teleport so you're not kiting mobs around much.

This is a complaint quite a few people have as nowadays it seems that people want some twitch based or 'actiony' type combat where moving is much more important. Games in this high-fantasy type genre very rarely have this as the main point of combat.

Since Rift has taken just about everything it does from games where they don't move around much like British/American battles where you just stand there trading blows, this might bore people like the OP who are looking for next gen, which Rift isn't even though it says it is.

I play  a Paladin/Champion/Beastmaster, and lovin it! I jump around the mob and kill them easily with no downtime at all. It's a very powerful spec, atleast for me :D

Rerolled as a Paragon/Champion/forgot other and the class is way more to my likeing.. All my skills were pretty much instant cast and depended upon building up an agro then releaseing a finisher move.. I killed mobs in like 1/4th time also.. This will be the class ill be useing come release date :)

PvP at melee range involves dancing around your opponent so you force him to face away from you so he doesn't hit you. That makes all melee pretty mobile in PvP. Of course it's a different ballgame in PvE, where you don't have to move at all, since mobs don't employ flanking maneuvers.

If you take on one mob at a time, then no. If you take on multiple, yes. I go for the latter and run into a pack of 2-3 mobs as a Warden, Sentinel, Cabalist. I do pretty well.

Also played a Marksman, Riftstalker, Saboteur. I had a lot of fun with that. I was constantly moving and got movement enhancement buffs.

And in PvP you are almost always moving no matter what you are ^_~

Aside from Ranger/Marksman, you could try Riftblade (warrior soul). Highly mobile, good ranged & ranged AEs as well as constant snares and a root as a means of keeping mobs at bay. Strafe kiting is very doable with these tools as long as its not an immune boss.

Add in a bit of champion to that and you can combine their knockback with the riftblade insta-root. I like Riftblade/Reaver for this personally (possibly a bit of low end paragon for the 30% damage boost too) as their ranged AEs compliment nicely and leaves you with quite a bit of utility, and you're not in all that much trouble if anything closes the gap.

    Nightblade

Esentially a rogue that uses ranged DOTs and snares.

    How about that ?

Hmm i'am thinking about going Paragon/Champion/Riftblade now.. Paragon+Champions skill tree's compliment eachother, both offering good bonuses on combat point moves + finisher moves.. And then i could use Riftblade for the snares/roots for a quick escape possibley.. Not to mention i'am gonna be a wee little dwarve!

Hahah! After playing the game last night with this combo i made it up to the same content as i did with my Inquisitor and was blowing through it and havin' a blast.. Pretty excited now because in less then 3 weeks ill be playing the real deal, cant wait!

Goes to show you how different the classes can be in Rift and how the soul system really can make one playthough completley different then the other.
