I bought the game last year and I was a little disappointed, although I was really impressed by terraforming. Some time later I discovered Minecraft and I am pretty sure I wouldn't have bought Xsyon if I had found Minecraft before.
I gotta say though... Xsyon has improved a lot the past months, and they are patching in even faster now since the release is near. In the end I am glad I bought it anyway, cause I didn't have that much fun building stuff together with people / my tribe ( who were as clueless about the game as I was). We built our small tribe village together, then I pretty much stopped since I heard that they are going to wipe soon for release. There are a lot of "solo mmos" out there but in Xsyon you have to be in a tribe to be part of the real fun in my opinion.
Anyway, I don't know how long Xsyon will last for me, but I'll be on for the release for sure.
I'd be interested in hooking up with your tribe, send me a PM with your in game name and starting area I should create my character in and I'll stop by and see you. (Right now my avatar is so lost in the NW woods not even the animals appear to be living there)

Alright, so I preordered and played for a few hours yesterday, and I can say that I'm looking forward to see where this game goes. For people curious about whether to preorder... If you're looking for a new game to log on and jump right into the action, this is not it. It's a slow burner. You start off super weak and slow. You build up your skills from scratch. It is a true sandbox, and so far I'm excited about it. I can definitely see some awesome stories coming out of this one. I just hope the company running it remains stable and follows through with their plans (just like 99% of you, I've been burnt a billion times by games that just fail to deliver what they promise)
As far as my experiences yesterday, for those of you wondering what the game is like when you start; so far, I went around picking up rocks and grass and chopped a few trees down into firewood and built myself a little firepit. Then, I went searching for flint only to get totally sidetracked exploring some big rocky island that I swam out to, where I started weaving grass into twine and eventually realized what skills I really wanted to start with when the player wipe hits lol.
Ok, I tried it and the one statement that really keeps bounding about over and over in me noggin' is:
"Not worth the subscription fee"
I wasn't overly disappointed with the game, in fact I could see some fun in there. There's not enough fun for $14.99 a month though. My comparisons with Minecraft were right, but Minecraft was never a play continuously for weeks game for me, and neither could Xsyon be...or not yet at least. Xsyon would be fun in spells, as it currently is, and I can not justify a next-gen MMO level sub fee for a game I play on and off.
Xsyon has a real potential and the proposed features could well make for a great game, but I just don't see enough there to keep me entertained until that comes along. Prelude is just another stage of beta in my eyes.
I don't want to hurt Notorious' effort but I just worry about where the money is going to come from to support them in the long run, and in the time it will take to make Xsyon a fully evolved game with all the great features that are proposed. Sure there will be the hardcore fanbase that will stick with it, but I can't help but believe that for every one hardcore fan then there's going to a multiple number of that who give up and stop supplying funds for the further development of Xsyon.
Xsyon would be a huge success if it started with experimentation and discovering recipes, religion, tribe versus tribe warfare, an economy and more. Minecraft is a success because it charged a small amount upfront and lets people alpha/beta continuously with no further costs. You can play however much you like without feeling out of pocket for no return.
I'll keep my eye on things and come back in 6 months.
I'm sorry to say I see a lot more fun in the new EQ progression server right now.
As for anyone else, if you love crafting games and really exploring everything you can make then this would definitely be a game for you. You can craft to your heart's content and the wealth of tools and methods at your disposal is immense. I'd just say 'join a tribe early'. The game works best with tribe cooperation...I reckon. I don't think solo players are catered for unless that person has tremendous determination and willpower to grind away with limited starting options. If you could interract with tribes to trade then maybe.
I hope I don't damage Xsyon's prospects with this post. It's not a review really, just my feelings. I'm certainly not putting Xsyon out of my head and in to the garbage bin because I thoroughly believe it'll be a great game oneday. It just needs more depth for me.
The game you're playing now in beta is lacking few key features that will be in for launch.
Xsyon has huge potential so don't be discouraged with what you see.
How the world will look like after launch depnds heavily on players decisions and actions.
The feature I'm looking for the most is "daily update", it will be in for launch.
Daily update make trees and grass regrow , scrap piles renew when we destroy our items.
Animals won't be spawned they will be born(male and female required ), they will grow and get old.
It's up to us if the specie extincts or if it's population will grow.
Their stats will change so it'll be hard to find two identical animals, they can also mutate into powerful, dreadful creatures.
We'll get zombies and other creatures as well so there'll be plenty to do except crafting.
Tribal warfare will be fully introduced a bit later when devs come up with reliable siege system.
Complete feature list should be introduced during Prelude and many more to come after.
So don't let beta scare you of, and keep an eye one the changes.
Trash piles/scap piles won't regrow. Once they are used up, they are gone, period. There's plenty of trash, but it is still a "limited" amount. Oh i see, when items destroyed on htat area, more scrap? Hmm, hadn't heard of that one, but sounds cool.

Can you fly kites in Xyson??? Didn't see that listed in the features.
Look, if you are offended then I have done my job. Your review of the game has too much polish to it for it so seem real for me. Every time I see something listed about this game, it seems too contrived.
Xyson sounds like a solid game that I would definitely be interested in playing, but there is no "organic" word of mouth that is backed by actual players that I can see.
Compare Xyson to MineCraft "organic" spread and this game, while relatively simple, has over a million players without ever being complete. I can't seem to find the same, or any level of coverage for this game that doesn't look like a sales pitch.
If you truly are not connected to Xyson, then the fault lies in the fact that you wrote an excellent review for a game in the forums where the trolls and fanbois lurk. You should have contacted MMORPG or other MMO sites and submitted that as a nice journalistic endeavor instead of a murky looking sales pitch.
Xyson looks like the game I want to play, but I have been burned too many times before.
I've been burned too many times too. I don't go around assuming that every player who writes a good review is a developer for that game though.
Me? I was just pleased to hear a review from someone on this game. I've been toying with pre-ordering for some days now and the OP's review has given me something to think about. People can be very complimentary about a game and not be a developer. You're paranoid if you think it is otherwise.
I'm still not sure about Xsyon though. I love minecraft and I loved Pre-NGE SWG and I can't help but think this game combines the two of those and has a possibility of giving me a game in which I can feel engrossed.
I just still don't know about paying £20 for a game I know next to nothing about. I was negative about this game when I looked closely at it last year. I saw some combat videos and it gave me a real feeling of horror. I'm sure I posted my response on these forums. Something made me have another look a week or two ago though, and I saw what seemed to be a different game.
I'm still in two minds though. I doubt friends will be interested in Xsyon and that is one thing that makes me dubious, and I'm not the social animal that many may be so I'm always very tentative about finding a guild (or tribe as it is in Xsyon). How friendly is the game? How quick is it to feel immersed and at home?
I need convincing. The new progression server for EQ launches in March and it's really that or this. Any other game I'm interested in is way off. I'm tentative about EQ too, because it might just be a bad revisiting of good old memories. Xsyon is actually ahead for that reason but EQ will get the nod if I can't decide.
Id get this and skip out on the new EQ server, they wont be like classic, there will be a few powerful items like augments. The cash shop will be there. There will be boxers galore who wont care about grouping with real life players just themselves. And after Velious the population will dwindle and dissperse just like every other server. $OE has messed up alot of games, and heres a developer thats trying to break the mold and do something diffrent for a change I mean come on your charecter ages, terraforming/changing terrain, pvp, looks like a crafters paradise. Id say go with this game and give some money to the indie's. Im really on the fence about this game myself and may pick it up in the next few days after reading the msg boards here and over on the game site everday now checking back on updates.

Wyrm wasn't the first of the kind either, you're right.
That being said, Xyson will be a better game by leaps and bounds if the following questions have favorable answers:
1. Does Xyson have a digging skill or a grass collection skill? Wyrm really is a pain because it has stupid skills like these. I enjoy skill based "leveling" but wyrm was way too bogged down in making a skill for everything and it was way too much effort for too little reward.
2. Does Xyson have mounts? Wyrm did and they were quite useful. If Xyson's world is half as big they'll do well here too.
3. Not lying here, but it took about 3 hours a day for about 10 days before you had enough skill in wyrm to try taking out something as simple as a wolf, a single wolf... Is xyson this tedious?
I'm not saying Xyson is better than Wyrm, but I really don't see how it could be worse. Looking forward to the answers of these questions.

1. Yes and Yes. Xsyon has terraforming, and to be able to dig "up" you have to have dug "down" somewhere else to get dirt.
2. Not at the moment, nor probably at launch. The dev's are working on taming, not sure if it'll be done by launch though. Will have to tame a pet, get a saddle, equip saddle on animals that can have a saddle, and then it'll be a mount.
3. Not nearly as tedious, no. I've play Wurm as well, and though Wurm is an addictive and fun "Building Game," there's a lot more to Xsyon then just building and crafting. Even more planned for the future, i.e. Tribal Wars, mining, farming (both animal husbandry as well as fields), cooking is in the works now, should be in prior to launch.
Other big difference is the shear size of everything. 120+ tool/weapons, and armor types for each "class" of armor, grass, leahter, bone, cloth (all with many many patterns). Each armor protects different, effects your character different as well.
It's not just a sandbox building game....It's a sandbox MMO, period. Almost anything that you could imagine in a game that you wanted "more control" over, or more like a sandbox, well, that's all in Xsyon, or will be.

If you've played both I'll trust your opinion that it's not as tedious in general. I remember being with 5 of my friends and we had to dedicate one guy to learning how to dig so we could terraform our building site. Also good to hear it won't be 8 years before I can stab something. (Ok now I'm exaggerating but sweet monkey jehosephat it took FOR-EVER to learn anything in Wyrm.)
I'm going to miss ranged weapons like bows though, but you said in an earlier post they're working on it. How are the mob spawns, I read the feature list, is all of that regarding mobs implemented in game yet?
Starting to sound like I need to pimp this game to Team Dwarf (we met playing dwarf fortress, don't ask, too long to tell) and see if we can be the Dwarven Hobos that a tale in the desert, Wyrm, and Minecraft just didn't quite let us be. Oh speaking of that, is the terrain deformation using Voxels? Perhaps another method letting you create caves? (a la Crytek Engine) Or is it just planar with large holes possible but no caves (a la everything else).
Can someone tell me how the beta is going? Is it smooth and looking good with polish? On a scale of 1 to 10 with 1 being MO beta and 10 being the rift beta (just in terms of polish and implemented game mechanics) where do you think Xyson would fall?
I'm really interested in this game but am holding off at the moment.

Truthfully, I'd say 6. Slightly above average as the world is super stable and bug free but many of the features are in code but not active in game yet. They just did a wipe and patch but as the DL is like 1.40 gigs for me at a rate 150 megs an hour Crowfoot wont be playing Xsyon anytime soon. -Just the facts.
yeah id say somewhere between a 6 and a 7 its performing real smoothly however that was after messing with the settings for a while getting it to my own personal liking while not effecting performance. Not buggy at all for the most part, only problem i had was once after jumping off a waterfall to test if jumping into water hurts you from high altitudes(it does so ill save you the trouble of testing it out) died and ended up after respawning walking like a ghost and was able to huvver abov the surface of water.
Me too:) Slooow patching so far. Not sure if I can hit the abort and fire this back up later on or not without losing the data downloaded to this point...otherwise, game sounds like a blast. I'll update when I finally get in and check it out for a bit.
yeah its a really slow patch but you can do it in parts feel free to abort and go bac later it saves the data ive been doing it in parts for past few hours
yeah its a really slow patch but you can do it in parts feel free to abort and go bac later it saves the data ive been doing it in parts for past few hours
Hehe, is only slow because so many are dowloading.
As for my rating, i'd say a 7 was a good number. Still some people crashing, but there is a specific e-mail to send in crash logs anyone gets. bugs@notorious-games.com
the crash logs show up in a folder: c:/users/public/games/xsyon/log
These logs have been very helpfull for the Dev's to tweak things to help prevent any other crashes. Prior to the "wipe/patch" hadn't crashed once in 4 days. Just crashed now though, after about 13 hour of playing. Think it was more my computer though.
And as someone above me said, a lot of stuff was already proven to work fine in previous beta's/test server, and doesn't need further testing, so was removed for ease of the beta.
(one being tree growth, if there's no on to chop down trees, they overrun the area quick. another being animal "breeding", as they to can breed too fast, and if no one around to kill, over run an area quickly).
Now, as more and more people join, those systems will be tweaked so there is a good balance, I'm sure. Just in beta mode, wasn't always someone around.

Screw it, I took the plunge and bought. Patching now.
Ah, cool. Thanks:)
INfact i just got it going again im like 20 mb away fromgetting to finally play an i have no idea what they added after last wipe so im excited

Heh, looks like you've done good. I love the idea, we'll see if I love the game. Won't be the worst I've wasted money on... *cough*Alganon*cough*
