Earthrise launched worldwide last week and MMORPG.com Industry Relations Manager Garrett Fuller has been spending some quality time in game. He's got a few first impressions to share with our readers so check it out. Be sure to leave a comment or two below when you're finished.
Earthrise has been on our radar for a while. It is a game that was made independently out of Masthead Studios in Bulgaria. It promised open world settings for players in an old style Ultima Online format. The graphics looked good enough and the sci-fi setting sounded cool. So now that the game has launched, let’s take a look at what it has to offer.

It will be my Anarchy Online 2 ,oh yes,it will be.
atleast i hope so.
Generation P
Been playing since Launch and did a bit of beta and so far Im loving it.
Really reminds me of SWG and a bit of L2 for some reason.
This would have been my AO2 but it failed... The FPS and Performance issues in that game are rediculous, it was nowhere near ready for release.. Big let down!
Xsyon here I come!
I just could not get over the combat. It felt so out of sync. The animation to overall movement felt sloppy to me. For some reason it just drove me nuts.
Are you kidding me? Not a single mention of the completely unplayable state of the game for most people?
1. Many game keys did not work for activating accounts
2. No one has received preorder bonuses
3. Server lag is so bad that there is often a 5 second delay between firing a weapon and the weapon actually firing. By this time, the mob has already warped across the screen.
4. They've already put a hold on many people's credit cards for the first month subscription, something no other MMO does until the free time runs out
5. Players frequently de-sync from the server, causing all mobs and NPC to disappear
6. Chat lag is so bad that it's useless
7. No server status messages in-game, they just yank the plug every few hours when the zones crash
8. Promised FPS fixes at end of beta have been pushed to "in progress", leaving most of us with no alternative but to lower all settings to 2001-quality, even with high-end machines
But you still gave this a "Try it Out"? There are going to be some VERY disappointed folks out there who took your advice, sir. As a long-time member of your site, I find this kind of warrantless recommendation to actually be borderline unethical.
tabula rasa?
some people have recieved there pre order bonus but we are gettign a free month so yea.
yea give it amonth or 2 before you try it out guys : )
yea that will be fixed in due time
I'll be checking back with Earthrise in a few months, once i get bored of Rift.. By then i'am sure it'l be a very good MMO.. I know i've bashed it a lot, but i like the art style (not the animations) and the skill/weapon system.. And its a sandbox.
Currently Playing:
Rift + Starcraft II + Gears Of War 3 Beta
Playing: Rift, LotRO
Waiting on: GW2, BP
Very poor overview. Not reliable in any aspects. You'll understand why I say that when you will log in for the first time.
I know that when I've reviewed games in the past, either professionally or for my own personal friends, I've tried to keep in mind what Anton Ego said in the Disney flick, "Ratatouille":
¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Enjoy WoW 2.0 with terrible combat system and very long drawn out boring boss fights. Nothing new there, I am in Alpha and been in all the betas.. The game is crap and I cancelled my 6 month Sub and Collectors Edition Pre Order. My money is with Xsyon and maybe ER in the future.
I think you may be getting the intent of this statement a little mixed up. He was defending GOOD food, created by someone whom the current society would deem unable to produce such. He wasn't overlooking chunks of rat hair in his food for the sake of a decent meal otherwise.
In not being honest with a review, more damage may be done to the reputation of an indie developer than not. Sure, the new needs friends, but what the new does not need is potential customers being told to expect something the game cannot currently deliver.
The new needs honest friends.
With that said, I think this game has a lot of potential, and I certainly hope it can survive the clunky launch.
Whoah you guys are touchy! :P
I simply meant that at the very bottom, reviews are critiques of someone's hard work and while there's is no excuse for padding a review simply to be 'nice', it's the way that one (meaning ME only) words those critiques that matters. And I honestly believe that there's something redeeming in just about anything. I'm not Mr. Zero Punctuation, LOL!
Regardless of how much I hate a game and how awful I think it is, it's still someone's hard work and criticism should be tempered by that thought, that philosophy, while writing the truth about what it is.
I would never advocate writing a review that doesn't lay it all on the line.
Now, back to topic. Apologies for derailing. Carry on!
¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Well, this article DEFINITELY didn't lay it all on the line.
so you saying its performance issues at launch isnt harsh enough for you?
I am surprised that none of the horrible lag/gameplay issues mentioned by so many people made it into your first impression... If it was my article, it would be very similar to what you wrote except the performance issues would have been mentioned and I would have advised new purchasers to wait a month or two before buying.
Ok guys,
I'm going to step in here.
First, Suzie (Sbford) was speaking for herself and not for the overall policies of the site regarding first impressions. The editorial staff (me) doesn't give writers any kind of mandate to be "nice" in their reviews / previews / first impressions.
Second, this wasn't a review. this was a general first impressions article detailing the writer's early experiences with the game. I will say it again: This is not a review and should not be read or referred to as such.
Agree with it or disagree with it, these are the bare bones of the author's early experiences with the game.

Your primary job should be to inform potential customer about a product. If you deliberately leave out things that will impact his experience of said product you will lose credibility.
Just like you lost your credibility for me when you posted a preview about Darkfall and not mentioning all the issues present with the lag, hacks, craptastic UI, the horrible animations and so on. Rather the preview was rather postive which lead me to buy the game, just go find out that it was barely playable.
Imo, you are doing it again with Earthrise... but fool me once...
EDIT: You = mmorpg.com. I see all articles written by their staff to be endorsed by mmorpg.com.

{Mod Edit}
Look, like it or not, when people see a first impression article that is mostly positive and does not mention any big issues and with a big icon at the bottom saying to try the game then people may be inclined to do that. So leaving out those issues is BAD and it makes you lose credibility.

As for Earthrise, if they ever fix the FPS issues, I may give them my $50. Until then as mentioned Xsyon is the better Sandbox and deserves all the attention it is getting!

Frankly I dont much care if it is someones hard work because they want me to pay money for it. So what I, as a customer, care about is if my money will be well spent. That is what a critiq should focus on, not if he hurts the devs feelings about their hard work.
We already have the devs website to hear about how great their game is. What we customers now need is someones unbiased look and if this game is worth the money or not.

Wait! You expect the perfect launch of a MMO?!? You played an MMO without lag, without bugs on its launch? Please, name it! I am playing Earthrise and sure it has a lag (but not always), sure, it has bugs, but not critical and sure it has potential, because it is made by gamers for gamers!
