Maybe blizzard and trion had a secret talk and are sharing profits, blizz is like yea we know we messed up on the game and lots of players are leaving trion why dont you market it towards the wow players and make it almost an exact copy aside from the warhammer parts with rift like public quests. And then run a tv ad stating "your not in azeroth anymore" thatll get'em itll be great. While working at walleyworld I remember seeing ads for wow run on there tvs all the time one time some young young kid was with his mom pointing at the screen saying "mommy its world of warcraft" now hell be pointing at the screen saying "mommy its rift"
I get the feeling it'll be up there with the likes of Aion. Flawed, certainly, but so much bigger and better than most of the competition that it'll still be quite a success. I think it'd need another major coat of polish to really be sure, though.
I can see why people compare it to WAR, but even just from first impressions alone, I felt WAR was a huge letdown. Not what I'd call remotely polished at all. Course, "polish" is a vague term, and I could be wrong, but I'd bet on Rift doing much better.
When I want a single-player story, I'll play a single-player game. When I play an MMO, I want a massively multiplayer world.

I was not surprised to see some of the same whiney little jerks in RIFT beta repeatedly post in chat , comparisons to WOW. If you don't like RIFT, don't play. In my Opinion and Opinion only, i think WoW cata was the worst expension, and since alot of player was mad about the difficulty of dungeon heroic and other stuff in the game they lose many player , after weeks, or months, of subscription losses,Blizzard announces a difficulty nerf they had to do something fast because money talk louder, lol
so back to the topic
so ,many players will need a new home and i think many of them are targeting Rift. and i got a few friend from wow who is joining me in Rift and im probably not the only 1 leaving for a new game,
I Am maybe wrong or right, but this is what i think
I would have to kind of agree with this post.. many of my friends after just 2 months of this expansion are either leaving or just stating " so i hit lvl 85 in a day or so done the dailies now what? pug? no way fail fail fail even on regular dungeons.. I am open to a new game on the block.. I dont even know what Blizz is doin.. to me its almost like they are doing thier worst to see what can make or break a game ... I played the beginning beta of Rift.. I am NOT goin to flame the game as I dont know whats even out there in later lvls.. but as for "polish" someone spoke of? it runs pretty darn good.. the graphics are really nice.. the smoothness of the game was good... begining quests were you know noob quests to get ya started... i do wish more companies would get you more engaged in the beginning proicess... picking the npc's with something over thier heads only gets you.. people running around picking all a them and NOT reading the lore etc... make them have to actually READ the quests.. ( IMO) keep people engaged in the game with constant updates every month of new content.. or at least every coupla months etc... this at the end of lich king standin outside and tappin on the window waiting for Cata to come was just stupid.... then it comes and poof in less than a coupla months you have people bored??? so sad anyway thats my 2 cents worth Kwosh probably will give Rift a try I try all the new games
Wow, I didn't expect the results that the poll is showing. Seems this game has a lot more followers than I had originally though. I voted for #3 as well, Rift is a good game but it won't hold that many people.

forgot to post this in my post i would say between 2-3 the people that stay in wow have played it off and on... they say its this huge game in number of servers and people only... all the beginning content till cata is empty of people... id like to see where this 11 million are mostly.. europe? Canada? USA? Asia? anyway i do hope this game makes at least a dent
I think the crunch time will actually be in October. They have really been pushing the cut price six month subscription deal so lots of people will be going for that. I have myself. However, a lot of people are probably also like myself, thinking of it as a fill in game while they wait for some other expected games such as GW2 and SWToR.
I'll be surprised if I'm still playing it regularly by the end of the summer but I'm cool with that. If I get two or three months play for my money that's as good as any other game I've bought in the past three years. I'll play the game through as one faction then try the other. SwToR should be out by then.
In my opinion 200k subs in the long run is still a success - or did times change so much in the last few years? They just shouldn´t sell lifetime-subs.
One thing to consider. *Most* people who are trying Rift are also looking forward to GW2, and I think it's fair to say that GW2 has a slightly higher hype level. Unless Rift proves to be ridiculously amazing and completely hooks its players by the time GW2's beta comes out, many of Rift's player base will try GW2. If GW2 turns out to be great, or even just better than Rift, Rift could lose a huge portion of its player base.
I agree, but prob not me, I dont like that there system chooses half of your abilities for you, talk about rinse and repeat, I almost put GW 2 more in the action MMO genre from what I have seen, and while I hope SWTOR will be amazing I have some major concerns about how much off a MMO it really is.
Also people forget that many peeps play 2, 3 or even more MMO's at one time, that is why every time there is a major MMO release almost all of the games temporarily loose some players, but they usualy return once they have had their fill.
So who cares if GW2, SWTOR etc will be amazing, they arent out yet but the rift early access is only weeks away. I will try all of em, I know myself well enough to know that, I can't say no to a shiny new AAA MMO.
I will say this, I had more fun and was more pulled in by rift than any other mmo in the last couple of years, but to each there own.
This has been my experience during new MMO releases up to now, excluding WoW:
I buy the game, I play for a couple of days and then I find something so crappy about the game I just can't get past it, for AOC it was the instancing more than anything, in WAR it was the monotiny and lack of PVE content + unstable servers, for AION it was the lack of depth, like no swimming at that point no way to increase the power of your heals etc.
I have played in 3 Rift Beta events, puting in prob more time than I spent on the released versions of these games and I still love it and can't wait for Open Beta, that tells me that at the very least I will get value for money and have some fun.
Also what contitutes a succesful MMO has become muddled, you don't need 14 mil active players to be a success, you just dont. WoW has become like facebook, my friends play it, so I play it, and I have fun doing it, not because of the content but because of the comradery in the guild.
In my opinion 200k subs in the long run is still a success - or did times change so much in the last few years? They just shouldn´t sell lifetime-subs.
Depends on how much is spent on development, and they do seem to be spending quite a bit more on MMOs these days. I think 200k (sustainable) would be a marginal success for Rift, and they're probably hoping for a lot more.
When I want a single-player story, I'll play a single-player game. When I play an MMO, I want a massively multiplayer world.
It's not a "WoW killer". It probably isn't even a "sleeper hit" that grows slowly, but steadily over time. However, I think it may do better than most MMOs we've seen the last few years. Outlook through July is at least good, because my impression is that the other big titles we might see this year won't be until the second half of the year.
Some of the challanges long term are:
"How does end game play out"?
"How do Rifts and Invasions play out as the novelty wears off and how will they work in lower level zones as the population curve levels up"?
"How bad will Trion have to Nerf souls as uber combos start to be identified and will they be able to retain the current level of freedom in character builds"?
"How efficiently will they add quality content as the game moves forward"?
I pre-ordered and will play from launch, like the game a lot, but long term outlook on a promising MMO is never a certain thing based on beta play experience.
I have nothing against Rift, or it's development team, but I hope it fails, because the industry runs on market signals and if people still want the same old shit, then they will continue to make it.
On the other side, I hope it succeeds. Cause it would signla the industry that we want complete products and not half-assed tries releasing too early!
Exactly, it's a complete product that's what makes it stand out from other MMOs that have launched. If you don't like the questing and leveling from an MMO and consider it the" same old shit" then maybe you shouldn't be playing an MMO.
I kind of wish there was an option for growth. I think the game will gain subs over time like EVE did. Doesn't mean it will be a smash success at the beginning or ever for that matter. I do think it will retain players, since those that are bored of the type of game will leave sooner than later.
I like that there is 20man raid content at launch, another "Mystery" raid launch instance shortly after release and then another 10+ Boss encounter raid within several months. To me this sounds so much more promising than Vanguard's -wait a year- before raid content even exists or Aion's lack of endgame progression.
This has been the most polished Beta experience I have had in a game since EQ and am looking forward to seeing all the content come together that I missed in its earlier Beta's. So far for me, the graphics are there, lead community involvement is there and what appears to be a solid endgame to look forward to. I have become quite skeptical over the years when it comes to "anticipating longevity" in a Fantasy MMO but, so far I can tell that it is worth the initial purchase and my expectations in it's Beta have been exceeded.
Rift will have far less upfront sales than most people are thinking.. maybe in the 100k to 200k range. It just isn´t that well known outside of really geek sites like this one.
I know 7.6 million people that pre-ordered that may want to disagree with that.
And where did you get the "7.6 million PreOrder" figure? Because that is a substancial figure, which I would not have really expected.
He pulled it out of his ass. Rest assured, Rift does not have anywhere even remotely close to "7.6 million" preorders. They'd be very lucky to have 100k preorders.

Try to inform yourself before you post.
Thanks for making my point. You're exactly right. Hardly any of the game has been played. The only real question for a MMO and it's life expectancy is what happens at level cap, and that won't have a qualified answer until after release.

1,2 million copies sold. 400K players after 6 months.
So I predict it goes better than WAR and AoC, they were both a lot less polished and had less content. After those 6 months it depends on how well Trion handles the updates.
WAR and AoC would both have been a lot larger today if they didn't release a long time before the game were done, Rift was in a better state 2 months ago than those 2 were months after launch.
Still, no way that it will get a million subs for more than the first month, TOR and GW2 will have more players. I am not sure about TERA and TSW, probably not but it is hard to say, TERA is Rifts main competitor here.
I think it's coming at the perfect time. People are bored with wow alot had stop subbing over a year ago waiting for star wars or guild wars two to release. But those games are taking longer to release than most have hoped for so I think people will just play Rift instead of waiting a year to play the other games. Maybe we will only get seven months out of it but it is good enough that it might be a keeper. Either way they have 7 months till most will have to resub. Unless you think Tera is going to be a good game there's really no reason not to do the six month sub.

I'd say they already have over 100k preorders. Otherwise I agree that its no where near 7.6 million. Still I think what more important is what Trion does to retain players.

What is fun for the beta might not be fun every day in 6 months. That is a good reason as any to only pay for 1 or 3 months in a row.
