There is a huge difference from 200 players just standing in same area or moving around hitting some mobs here and there, and 200 players fighting for control of something, like the fights at Fortresses in Warhammer Online. That is what I want to see running without any lag in a 1080p or higher resolution without any kind of lag.

Why don't you ever look into things before posting about them?  A simple youtube'ing would've provided you with TONS of videos of Rift.  Here's a zone invasion event.

Why I dont look into things before posting?

Well the video you provided was a fight where 60-70 people fought in same screen at most, and the graphics was on lowest possible settings. Any game can handle that amount of players without problems WITH shadows turned on, and recorded in 1080p or higher.

Next time you give us a link make sure its a proper fight and not some minor battle.

My statement still stands strong, GameBryo is not a good game engine to be used for MMO-games. You fanboys can defend it all you want, but the fact remains, GameBryo is not good for these kinds of games.

Hmm, that video was beta 3. Something more recent would be more appropriate.

Runs Rift on "High" without shadows or AA at 35-55 FPS, the former being in congested areas like the capital cities, the later being either solo or with only a few people around me.  It doesn't stutter like most games, either . . .in fact, at 35 FPS, it feels smoother than most other MMOs at 45 FPS.

I think that's pretty respectable for ANY MMO.  I know others have issues, but it is capable (if their bugs are worked out) of running quite well on crappy hardware.

I would love to see your machine run massive pvp fights in RIFT. ;o)

    PS.

Massive pvp fights doesnt happen during beta, it will come once its live and the servers are full of players.

    DS.

It all boils down to, if you enjoy playing Rift then so be it. If someone else has grief with it, that's their issue.

I am not a huge fan of WOW, but my dislike of it doesn't stop others from playing it. So have fun with Rift if it's your style, and if not. Go find a game that is.

I was looking through old videos in Aion and found one where atleast 400 on each side fight each other, and remember that the game is created by the mmo-veterans NCSoft, if they cant make it lagfree I dont see how any other developer can. Most games would crash long ago with these numbers. RIFT is not an exception, I can bet you 1000$USD that it will crash with 200+ each side.

But as someone posted earlier, if you enjoy the game you do, but the performance wont be as good as some beta players are claiming. People are talking about FPS all the time, on my system in Aion hunting mobs with very few players close to me and with V-Sync turned OFF I can get up to 560 FPS on maximum settings, but that doesnt say anything at all because those FPS will drop dramatically in massive PvP fights. During fights like the one in the link above it drops to 1 digit numbers, it doesnt matter what graphics card you have your PCI-E ports and CPU simply cant handle the amount of data that has to be shuffled through your system when it tries to draw 600 players flying and walking around everywhere.

The downside with Aion is that the engine vanishes all/most allies when the battle is very heavy (the majority of sieges). Also the hard-drive hickups whenever a member of the opposing faction closes in to the player (which is a great alert mechanism btw, both in the abyss and the normal zones where rifts can appear).

Btw, I'm getting the same fps with Aion and Rift, both games maxed and ultra (in Rift I cut down some of the shadows though)

Edit: Regarding the environment, Rift is a lot better and has no issues with overstretched textures. On the other hand, Aion has a vastly superior character creator and their armor dyeing system produces much better looking results, although it doesn't have primary/secondary dyeing layers.

I agree that its a downside to vanish characters during sieges and only show the closest ones, but I think its the only way they can let that many characters fight at the same time. I Warhammer I remember they set a maximum number of players being able to take part of a fortress siege. I'm not playing any MMO-game at the moment tho, but I guess I will give Rift a try and see for myself how the performance is on my system.

The HDD hickups you mention, I never got any of those while I played Aion, but I've heard of others getting them, I dont know the reason to them either.

They put that in during last beta I noticed (could be earlier though).

    Basically you have 3 options:

none - smooth edges (or something like that) - ultra.

I've put mine on smoothe edges and it really makes a difference.

Do you have an SSD drive by any chance? It looks like fps drop to nothing for a sec (milisecond freezup), then it resumes (hard drive starts spinning I suppose).

Anti-aliasing was in beta 5 and 6. A bit more optimised in the last beta. (Edit: I think I have confused anisotropic filtering with anti-aliasing, my bad). If I'm not mistaken the game had AA and they just introduced anisotropic filtering with beta 5. If I could check the game client I would tell you with certainty.

Yes I've been using SSD's for some time for gaming, but to be honest I havent noticed any big differences from a game running from the SSD or the old HDD's. But I guess it could be as you say that it pause when the disk comes out of resting and starts to spin.

Gamebryo can't even use Multisampling AA that's how bad the engine is, in 2011 for christ sake...

    What MMO is different..?

Many of you people really need to stop arguing over trite & remedial stuff. It comes down to game structure. Do you like game with levels and classes, or do you like games with skill-based characters? Do you like themepark (zoned world), or sandbox (open world)..?

None of you are arguing in terms of how we spoke in MMO land 10 years ago. It seems none of you even understand, or differentiate between the TYPES of MMORPG's. Seems like many of you are sick of WoW...  so don't bother with any Zone based (ie: funneled content) games, that are mostly themepark mmorpgs. Which is a precise way to view what they are offering the consumer.

Typically, zoned game world's, means you are constantly funneled through these new areas, (ie: side-shows), public quests, POI...  to let you behold the next sharade (circus act) Mythic/Blizzard will perform for you & consequently enjoy the next park ride on their themepark tour, before moving you on to the next exhibit (ie: new area).

How a game is designed (world type, skill based, classes, portals, instancing, etc), is as important to what each of you like about each of the game's you love. Some of you seem to not even understand (directly) why certain game's that you may like, all share technology, or framework. Or simply do not place any importance on a game mechanics, but try to compare one game's animation & targeting, to anothers. It's pure ignorance.

RIFT is not offering you anything new in terms of anything. They are adding their styl;yzed flair, with new technology, based on a DAOC character set and a Warhammer type themepark... but in a more open format.

After that, the only difference is the lore and how the story is told. Some interpratation are better implamented, some are clearly not. What RIFT brings is new server technology, updated graphics and delivers RIFT as an appealing package, that almost anyone who has ever played ANY mmorpg, will feel @ home with.

It's a win/win for all of those who love to play mmorpg's, waiting for the next best mmorpg. Since that what most of you younger crowd seem to do, jump from mmo, to mmo constantly. Instead of investing themselves into what type of game world type they enjoy/like & then finding those game.

Hype, glitz and half-naked women advertisments are the first clue the game sucks!
