The Rift forums have a new post from Scott Hartsman with a mini 'state of the game' post-Beta Event 6. In it, Hartsman discusses some of the lessons learned from the last beta event and what the team plans to change for next week's open beta event. He spends most of his time discussion PvP, Raids and Rift events.
Let’s start with PvP in the shared world.
Just before Beta 6, we made an anti griefing change that prevented enemy wardstones at hubs and towns from being destroyed by the opposing faction, and significantly boosted guard strength around PvE hubs. We’re pretty happy with how that worked out on the PvE servers.
In time for Open Beta, we’ve developed the ability to repeal those changes on the PvP servers only, to see if they can remain playable without it. Ideally, it’s our hope that there’s gameplay value in having people being able to band together to attack and defend those areas on PvP servers.
If you choose to play on a PvP server, it’s our assumption that you not only don’t mind that level of interruption from that PvP attack-and-defense style of gameplay, but are actively excited about taking part in it. If you want uninterrupted PvE questing, choosing a PvE server is definitely recommended.

Really glad they made these servers. Beta 6 world PVP really suffered from the increased strength of the guards and the constant guard humping.
Shocked as hell the development team game us what we asked for regarding pvp, Im very impressed very impressed indeed, Thanks Trion very much
Right on board with you here. Wow!
He who keeps his cool best wins.
RIFT is the best of everything new (2004 ~)... if you are going to play one of the any game in the last 5 years, might as well make it this one.

aye i agree with pheltcher, been v.impressed with rift so far. i dont think theres a huge amount original about the game but what trion are doing is very similar to what blizzard did 7 years ago. there blatantly copying the best bit bits from the other mmo's and creating there own game with a high level of polish. (thats polish as in shine not lots of eastern europeans. allthough....)
One advantage that trion possibly has over blizzard however is back in 2004 there wasnt a lot of mmo's around to copy. nowadays, mainly thanks to blizzard, theres a whole glut of mmo's to rip off and even the bad ones may have an intersting feature that works well. Rift truly dos seem to be taking all those best bits and making a very intersting game. im very excited about the possibilities of this game.
If someone is talking in general chat in a language you dont understand, chances are they're not talking to you. So chill out and stop bitching about it!
Have to say I wonder if I'm going to always be one of the minority when it comes to my taste in games. I never could get into WoW. I'll buy Rift... give it a good go. I've been in the beta since the first weekend... I just never got attatched to the game. Six was the best for sure.. and maybe with time I'll grow to have a fondness. Probably hit end game and see where it's at at that point but I can't imagine myself keeping a sub(unless it woo's me) once TOR, TERA, or GW2 releases. Heck I've been intending to do a real play through of LoTRO. I've always loved the feel of that game.
I'm all for giving a game a good shake. I realize MMOs take time and generally have a bit of a hump after release to really shine. I play Aion right now and I've got to say I'm not "really" happy with the dificulty(rather hard for those with jobs) of the end game. I've played since launch and I'm still in so so armor though I do have a pretty good weapon. I've just not been lucky with some gearing quests. Still I "like" the game. I love visuals and they're giving that in spades post 2.5. In general I like my class too.(not exactly always the case). They've definitely improved the game since launch and that's the truth. Still like anything breaks can be good.(even if they turn out to be very long breaks) Heck I'm always open to moving on if a game "really" differentiates itself.
Rift is beautiful in so many areas but other games such as TERA and GW2 will be even better looking. Rift sticks to the tried and true with the exception of Rifts... which are in the end something that get's rather mundane after the first 20 or so. I'm not saying the game isn't a quality addition to the market... it just doesn't offer too much past WoW's 2004 effort besides an awsome class feature... which has yet to be put through a true gammut... let's see how many "good" builds come of it but so far it's very interesting. Admittadly the character models are great and so are many of the armor designs. I loved the inside of Sactum(sheesh it's going to take a while to shake that dejuvu). The candles were an amazing effect... loved the lighting.
What it "seems"(We don't know till we get there) to offer from what we hear at end game is a good raiding experience and a full pvp system that is at will not put on timers.(Very good for those like myself who don't always feel like logging in at set times to "take part") I have no doubt it will do fine... but it all depends on end game and post launch support as well as how nicely the games comeing turn out to be. One thing I really want to avoid is that seeming unavoidable mass exodus after a few months of playing... well guess we won't know until it launches. I wouldn't go as far as say this game is better than anything since 2004... LoTRO comes to mind... and a couple other releases. I'd say it's the most complete WoW experience outside of WoW since 2004 though.. maybe more.. but the first 20 levels don't tell me more than that.
Scott Hartsman = THE MAN. Kudos to Scott and the rest of Trion on their hard work so far with Rift.
Playing: Rift, LotRO
Waiting on: GW2, BP
Why be shocked? Trion is a great Dev Staff that listens to their customers. That's the main thing thats going to help them hold at dedicated fan base. So many useful changes per our feedback in each beta, and they still haven't let up.
Look forward to supporting Trion and helping the game develop.
This is great news for the PvP community especially! Trion contiues to prove to be an amazing company. Beta 7 can't come soon enough.
Exactly what Im always asking for. PVE servers with rulesets for all the whiners. And PVP servers with basically no rules for all the hardcore players. Now if they could get rid of the questing focus on PVP servers so people can focus on PVP, then wed get somewhere.
Trion FTW. This is how game developers should respond to gamers.
This doesnt change the flaws in the style of this game. Average graphical style, slow repetitive combat. Weak crafting, no meta game mechanics, trinity grouping, dumb AI, worse quests.
Yeah its pretty impressive the way that Trion interact with the community.
I've been playing since early beta and its always been like this, raise a valid point on the forums where other people agree with you and Trion seem to have the changes made before next beta.
Other MMOs could take a leaf out of there book.
Hey look, a company that actually cares about their customers. Bravo.
Like most MMO's then :P seriously nothing beats 400 odd players in the same zone at different parts all fighting a rift invasion with no lag. Public grouping an ease (click of button and in a raid) . Then a huge boss shows up...
warning: this screenshot was played on my laptop with all settings low (just in case) during the stress test although i was more surprised that it played on my laptop :-p

not bad for a level 7 boss.. an achievement from him too. Switched back to my pride and joy shortly after, no lag at all was seen during the test for me (and the place was anything but empty)
Compare that to WOW, where they had to abandon aerial combat in Wintergrasp and cut down the maximum players due to lag. Put the Argent Tournament in Icecrown instead of crystalsong due to dalaran's resource stress.
Then lets not forget the recent "lets remove an achievement from people who earned it, because we have an expansion out". (the exalted).
Yeah WoW is dead for me, after a month of hotixes, now into the 2nd month of cata with a huge patch, and they're still not sure if Druid tanking is working properly. It's just done for me.

Yeah, I agree its definetly better than most fantasy MMOs. They just need to do EVEN better for me personally. Like most MMOs is a bad thing, not a good thing. The one thing Im looking for that would change everything is a creative combat system/ui which immerses you in the game, not makes you feel like your a robot hitting the hotbar and staring at XP bars.
