Rift first impreshions

mentalynutsmentalynuts Member Posts: 80

It is very smooth and great graphics. Quests are nothing new. Talent system is great. Rifts give Bonus quests and are fun (if not a little confusing at first).

So far I am only lvl 10 (lvl 50 will be the cap)but its not slow lvling about average for a mmorpg (I have played about 3 hours would been faster but ran around for about 1 hour trying to learn few things). I am still in starting areas and are loads of people (reason 400+ ques) this is to be expected with it being open beta and makes the quests sometimes a pain in rear but makes rifts very easy tho.

I have died a few times so it is not over easy for starting areas. Yes this is very much a wow clone just seems more updated with the rift gimmick.

The UI is very much like wow has basic customization. The story lines for quests are well written and seem very interesting. Variety in yer class is an understatement loads of combination's and specs my main talent tree is Justicar tank with druid and shaman as other 2 talent trees. Community is very much like wows altho if you ask who plays wow in chat 99% people online will say themselves and are looking for something new. Combat seems a little faster than wow. I cannot comment on balancing as that is what beta is for. The games main focus is PVE play not PVP from what i hear so hopefully devs will keep it this way instead of trying to cater for everyone and ruining balance.

Good Points

Graphicly looks very nice

The game is very smooth

Nice flowing combat

Rifts are fun

Bad points

NO api this really is %(*& me off I really like writing addons and find it to be fun. The devs said they MAY put api in at later date but this has not been confirmed.

It is a wow clone you would be forgiven for thinking blizz made this game

No LFG tool. would be nice to help prevent spending time lfg for dungeons if you are like me and dont know anyone who is playing the game.

Things that make rift stand out

It looks great

Rifts are awsum they can happen at anytime and anyplace

Talent trees are great so many choices and variety.

All in all if you enjoy wow you will probably like rift. If yer bored of wow but like wows gameplay you probably like rift. If yer loooking for somthing new and groundbreaking you will probably not like rift. Ultimately it is more of the same but done well unlike so many other games that have tried and failed I feel this has potential to be a success.

All in all this is my personal opionion. I hope you like my mini review I can only comment on so much due to my lack of gameplay so this is mainly based of first impreshions.

To me it's more like Warhammer but not as sucky.  I gave it an honest play and this game is totally not for me.  I hope it works out for all the peeps that do like it tho!

I wonder... Do you lurk in all of the game forums that you have decided are not for you?

Update now lvl 14  lvling is slowing right down and the game feels like it is becoming a grind the devs have seriously lacked imagination for quests. just feels like constant kill count quests. Yes there are a couple of collec this amount of items, talk to this guy do something hear but not nearly enough of them to keep it interesting. Combat has also slowed down I no longer die when lvling but takes a fair while to killl mobs but i am tank spec so that is understandable.

    Update now lvl 17

I am now using a hybrid spec that has speed the killing up so seems a bit better but kill quests are starting to get annoying. I would not mind so much but some areas you cant move due to them being to many mobs and half of them are not the mobs needed for the quest.

I think spawn rates have been increased due to server numbers to keep up with supple and demand. So I'm not fussed about this but little more variety in quests would rearly help. The areas seem huge but game seems to lack transport system yes there are mounts but would be nice to have taxis in the game so can go for smoke break or do something when traveling.

Also huge good thing you can dye yer gear so not everyone looks the same :) I love this

Got to level 14 on my marksman and It is awesome. Lots of stuff to do in this game but iut can feel like a grind if you rush through everything. Take your time and enjoy it. It is about the journey not the destination.

Tbh i rearly like the game and the only thing that is stopping me getting pre order is because there is no addon support. I love writing addons and have a fair few that i wrote for wow that have thousands of downloads to me enabling addon support would rearly help the game as it gives the user a more personal exsperiance.

While there is little doubt to the fact that there is a thriving addon community out there for various games, there is also those that would rather play in a game without them.  They feel that they take away from certain elements of the game, put too much of a focus on details that do not matter in the long run, or basically result in all but playing the game for you.

To an extent, this is where I believe Trion has worked to include certain of those design elements allowing for customization that do not detract from the game itself.

It is difficult, when thinking of addons, not to think of things such as DPS meters - threat meters - gear score meters - and boss mods or class mods that tell you that you need to do something NOW!

On the other hand, there are things that provide ease of access in changing wardrobes - sorting bags - and what some may consider fluff items or light lifestyle items.

So while I can see where there is a thriving addon community out there and I respect all the hardwork and effort they have put into creating addons for those games that allow their creation, personally I have to say that I am happy with the way Trion has gone on this particular issue.

I agree the last thing the game needs is things like gear whore or boss mods. But things like button facade, bartender, kgpanels, outfitter are great addons and. tbh it would be very easy to lcok certain features out of the api to prevent people making addons like gear whore/dbm.

I've found addons to be rather helpful in WoW, but they are so helpful that if you didn't have it, you were at a disadvantage. For that reason, I think addons are bad for games and give some players an advantage over other players who don't use them. For instance, healing addons that make healing groups easier offers an advantage to that user over a player that doesn't use it. Also, addons that measure DPS, gearscore, or any other thing that gives elitists a chance to turn your help down due to some number is also bad. I used to invite whoever into a group, no matter what they wore or what class or spec they used in DAoC, and go group grinding with them. Players back then knew how to use any combination of classes and specs to their advantage, while minimizing the disadvantages. Now that the days of addons have appeared, we have people who won't even bother inviting you if you aren't geared right. So there's no room for creativity in builds, just min/maxing for max effect.

I don't really care for add ons.  It's better if everyone has the same thing, that keeps it on a level playing field.  Also I don't like to download stuff created from the community as it may have some stuff in it I don't want, like key loggers, viruses, etc.

I don't mind addons I've used them.  The only thing that annoyed me about them is that when a patch came out I would have to update all the addons. :-P

If Trion limits addons and what they can do, keeping the undesireables out, then I would be all for it. Simple aesthetic to the UI/font/name plates and what not would be awesome to have, I enjoy customization. DPS meters, class addons that tell you which skill to cast, and anything that abuses game mechanics and huge no-no's.

"One thing I almost forgot to mention was the very original public quest system, wait no, I mean the Rifts. Yea the Rifts. So this game’s namesake is not so original after all but it is presented in a way that does appeal a lot more than the previous “public quest” attempt from other MMO’s. To begin with these rifts are very random and can pop up anytime, anywhere. As if that was not enough, leave a rift alone long enough and it will start sending full parties of baddies to the closest quest hub or town to destroy your favorite quest givers"

Would you compare it to War too? Personally I think the Rifts have nothing in common with War's open public quests. Sure, the essence is there but it is way more complicated in Rift.

Game felt like Warhammer to me as well.  I liked War for a bit and grew bored early which is the same thing that happened to me in the Rift beta.

Make games you want to play.

    Update now lvl 24

Leveling seems to hae got a lot more fun im mixing it up a lot doing rifts and quests seems to be getting more fun (altho have lernt a few things about my specs made it bit easier and more fun).

Anyways when hitting lvl 24 something dawned on me its very quiet no1 talking. So decided to pop into major city and see if and guilds recruiting after asking in local chat = no replies.  Anyways decided to stay in city and for 30 mins not 1 person has said anything. This rearly is not good for a game to succed its needs community. I shall keep an eye on this until my beta adventure is over is dont inprove i wont be buying this game. Even with people join public groups noone seems to say anything. This is rearly a bad sign.

Also another sign Im not shure on is I decided to pop onto another HIGH server and was very suprised to see no server ques on my server and the one I poped onto both ranked high and the initial starting area only had me and 3 other people that i could see in. With this being open beta im starting to get little worried i would think the servers would be packed and have ques the only ques i have seen ware on open beta launch day. I know it sounds daft but i would rather que knowing that going to be loads of people online than not having anyone online.

    Update now lvl 29

Well I have decided that I will not be buying this game. If your new to mmorpgs you will probably like it but to me it is nothing new. Yeh they hae few gimics the rifts and talent specs are awsum but sadly the game has gotten boring for me very fast.

Its polished. Probably the best beta I have ever played in term of polish. But sadly it just feels like more of the same.

    Pros

    Talents

    Rifts

    Looks good

    Cons

    Same old same old

Relies too heavily on its gimmics

Questing is very very liner (Stupidly liner)

    No api/addon support

  • URNotMegaURNotMega Member CommonPosts: 115

The no api/addons complaints make me laugh.  Development resources are limited.  Gameplay and game content should always be development's #1 priority.  Stuff like addons is just icing on the cake.  If they had a fully featured addon system at launch, they would be missing something else (most likely end game content).  That has the potential to completely destroy the game.  Lacking addon support at launch does nothing but anger the nerds who don't understand the development process.
