This is getting work and worse as I continue to beta the game, the over feeling is that the game is spiraling out of control, changes to server settings, connectivity , cleint patching effectiviness and maintaining content in the game. I will continue to test the game, butI am moving to a pass on this one.
Beta testing is amazing. Not only does it supply the developers with a ton of free help, but it also pisses off the exact type of people no one else will want to play with when the game goes live so they don't even up buying the game, giving everyone else a much stronger, smarter community.

I've had zero problems. During stress tests yes the servers have crashed, but that's the point.
EDIT: Oh guess when you aren't playing the game for a few hours something bad can happen haha.. well then yeah there are problems right now, but that's why they are having an open beta and running stress tests, so this won't happen at launch.
Relax It's the first issue they've had with the servers. A statement came out 6 minutes ago (About 5 minutes after server crash) saying that characters are fine. Trion is working on it. Go grab a soda, and most likely it'll be working again when you sit back down.
Of course we could have just broken every server at Trion to a degree that they're un-fixable...But i doubt it

Relax OP, it beta. Specifically open beta for which the purpose is extreme stress testing of the servers to see what they can and cannot handle.

I'll keep you updated on the server return status here!
Heads up for those of you not seeing your characters on the originally affected servers -- they are still there, the data was unavailable due to the above network problem we're in the process of correcting.

EU Servers are receiving the same server tuning updates being applied to the US servers through a hotpatch process that won't involve bringing the servers all the way down.

It's the first prime time of Open Beta! Stress Testing, including intentional adjustment of server settings to stress individual components and test bottlenecks. Pretty common for Open Beta and an important step, so there are no problems at launch.
It sucks, we all want to play, but this is very common and right on schedule, for those who have been in betas before.
Those thngs are cop outs to why they arent able to handle the increase in player base. You build mmos to hand millions of people, not 10,000.
It's no cop out, it's how you stress test. It doesn't even tell you anything about how good their systems were heading into OB, because they usually are intentionally tweaking things in sub-optimal ways to create additional stress. The data allows them to tweak settings for launch, to provide the smoothest experience with the fewest problems possible. It also allows them to firm up character limits and plan for how many servers they will have ready for launch, based on sales expectations.
If it also scares away some impatient players who can't comprehend that, so much the better. ;P

Never had character deleted. Never had port blocking in 9 yersd of mmo gaming, The only time I seen a forum be pulled was during OB of Vanguard Saga of Heroes.
You are very very "fresh" to MMOs then. WoW, Warhammer and other MMOs forums sometimes go offline when their servers crash. Also with many many MMOs (including the top 3) when character login server crashes, you cannot see your characters even when logged in. They are not deleted, just not accessible.

Everyone know's they're OP, but even the servers could not handle the OP awesomesauceness that was my cleric.
My apologies Trion and all open beta testers.
I will discontinue playing my Cleric and will now play my Rogue which everyone knows runs out of power after 3 attacks so there should be no awesomesauceness, OP'ing, server crashing greatness going on any longer.

The reason it went to facebook and twitter for updates is because when the server went down, it affected the official forums. They were down. It might be part of the data servers they were talking about that went down.Or the influx of people hammering the site caused it to go down.
