Plug Monitor Into Motherboard or Gfx Card?
Well it seems my monitor uses a smaller DVI connector than what my graphics card (Geforce GTX 460) has. If I plug it into the the motherboard DVI port will it still use my graphics card? Or do I have to use the connectors from the video card?

I have never seen a smaller DVI. But I have the same card. Has two DVI, the only size I have ever seen, and a HDMI slot.
he probly has a vga monitor connector and a dvi vid card. just needs an adaptor vga to dvi

Edit: Just to make sure.. It isn't a mini dvi right? Those are pretty damn rare. That's what they're like:
There is also micro-dvi but I think thats out of question.

What sort of monitor do you have?
ie, how old is it?
I think there are 3 types of dvi. One older version, one newer version, and a dell proprietary version.

He's probably either talking about VGA (blue) or a remote posibility of the mini-dvi or micro-dvi ports, but only apple and asus ever used those to my knowledge. I supose he could mean a HDMI port, which you can use an adaptor to a DVI cable though you loose audio.
Right now it looks like HDMI will probably replace DVI as the prefered connection method as people increasingly use HD tv's for computer monitors.
Uhg... it totally is a VGA. /facepalm Self pwned. So, do I need VGA to DVI, or DVI to VGA. Just weirded me out because I didn't know monitors still used VGA cables, and I just ran to Staples and bought the first thing I saw within price range. It's a 20" Hannspree (never even heard of that brand before). Sorry for the confusion, my fault. I've just been dealing with UPS taking their dandy time with everything, and having to go back out and get something else just hit a nerve with me.

If you plug the monitor into the motherboard, then it will use the integrated graphics that are built into the motherboard. That's fine if you're just going to stare at the desktop, but not good for gaming.
There are actually at least three or four types of DVI ports, not just two. Some are compatible with some others. You can get adapters between a lot of types of monitor ports and a lot of other types. It's reasonably likely that the adapter that you need was included with your video card, so you might want to check and see.

Well I've looked through all my boxes and everything, and I'm not seeing a VGA to DVI adapter. It didn't come out of the box, I noticed it earlier but I didn't think I'd need it til now.

They're cheap to buy if you need one, then. The shipping price might be more than the cost of the adapter itself if you buy one online.
So what am I looking for? I'll prolly just go back to Staples or the Mart of Walls to get it. DVI to VGA? or VGA to DVI?

If your monitor is VGA, you will need a VGA to DVI. You can get one at Radio Shack, probably Best Buy or yeah maybe Wal Mart.
Female VGA -> male DVI
It also has a DVI port next to where the VGA cord is plugged in. Weird that it would only come with the VGA cord. Thanks

Weird? Monitor companies prefer to think of it as "cheaper".
If your monitor has a DVI port as well, and is just using the VGA cable, you'll be much happier with the results if you just get a DVI cable instead of a VGA-DVI adapter.
DVI connection is totally digital, so there is no distortion or fuzziness in the picture which a VGA connection can sometimes get.
