Lord of the Rings Online: Monster Play Dev Diary

One of the most controversial systems in Lord of the Rings Online is Monster Play. Monster Play, or PvMP is the LOTRO equivalent of PvP and players have long called for better incentives to actually participate, complaining that the incentives weren't good enough which reduced the number of players engaged in PvMP. Turbine's Jared Pruett has penned a new dev blog about changes coming to monster play with Update 2.

Tutorial:

We felt the initial Monster Play experience was a bit overwhelming for new players. To alleviate this we have created a tutorial that gates all other quests. The tutorial introduces players to the basics of being a Creep and provides them with enough destiny and money to purchase and slot their first trait or corruption. It’s important to note that the destiny awarded for completing the tutorial is only given for the first completion. Subsequent completions will only grant money.

We didn’t want the tutorial to be a hindrance to our more experienced players, so we kept it brief, focusing on the core mechanics of Creep advancement. Players seeking additional information can now speak with their Monster Play Trainer to learn about more complex PvMP mechanics.

Lol the problem is not beeing creep,  the problem is being a green dot, and not being invited to groups becasue your a noob. It is normal for a green do to get to tohis own, or thats the way it used to be on brandywine.

Brandywine, Nimrodel, i think creeps everywhere are alike lol : not exactly great i suppose tho.

Meh, I say Monster Play isn't for anyone who can't stand being a noob, getting better alone, then start joining/making raids/groups... Its like Sparta lol! And i like it that way too...

But, in contrast with the picture, im pretty sure any1 would allow a greenie defiler in, except under special curcumstances (1: too many defilers, and 2: The defiler in question being an utter waste of space.. as in, he IS a pure noob... or maybe just a 5 yr old)

    this is my signiture

I played many hours of LOTRO as a creep. In fact my main was a Warleader, and really didn't play any freep characters past level 12 or so. I quit  playing before the defiler came out when they nerfed the creeps so badly that it became essentially  impossible for creeps to compete. We had a very organized group and did some great coordination but it got to a point it wasn't fun anymore and most of the group quit playing entirely. Makes me wonder if it would be worth coming back  now... I didn't really like PVP in most games I've played but LOTRO was fun.

I recently hopped back on LOTRO when I saw it was free to play, but my hopes were dashed when I found out that you still have to have a montly subscription in order to play as your Creep now.

Well, if this is what they have in stock for pvpm, this is sad. The main problem with pvpm is the map itself. It's so boring, people who keep playing this are either courageous, dumb or extremely bold. It's alway the same thing, people stands around south bridge and either creeps or freeps (whoever has the biggest zerg) charge and the others just run to their guards and camp there.  The fact that they took Dark age of Camelot new rvr experience has an inspiration was wrong to begin with, they should craft a smaller map, with no stupid keeps to take or defend, and add objectives instead ( like a bridge, a forest, small settlement....).

Theres a few things I would like to see in regards to lotro pvp . It would be good to see monster play available to f2players . A new area or two like the ettens would be welcome and most of all pvp skirmishes ( battlegrounds ) . The implimentation of these could bring in a lot of new players but i m proberbly stating the obvious there unfortunatly whats obvious to us isn't always as obvious to developers .

Given that there is a F2P model; why not pay for levels, traits, or even faster character development (earn one, get two free)?

I enjoyed creep play, but the very slow rate of advancement just put me off. Maybe not too bad now. Although I did log on a few months ago on a welcome back we and get called all sort sof name for pwning a "sleeping" toon. I suspect alt leveling in use :)

Keep in mind that this is just a simple update.  It's a bridge to the big PvMP revamp which will be in the next expansion due out Fall of this year.  What we know so far is that:

    • It will include a new region for PVMP.

    • PVMP will be opened to all players.

    • The level cap will be increased to 70.

So although this update is just a litle one - it was just tying up some loose ends getting ready for the big update!
