well i read around and heard it was best to use a controller for the game. So all excited i run out to my local gamestop and find a usb pc controller that looks exactly like a playstation controller for 9.99.. as i get home i realize it does not have any analog sticks just a d pad. My question is: do i need the analog sticks to play this game or can i move with the d pad? I really don't want to waste money on a controller when i'm going to have to buy another one anyway.
Thanks,

im not completely positive.
I played on the 360 and (if memory serves correctly) the d pad was used for menus.
I think you can use a wired 360 controller (not the recharge kit) for the PC.
but dont take my word for it. dont want you to waste money you can save.
sadly the last game system i ever bought was a playstation 2 and trying to find a ps2 to usb adapter this long after their production stopped is tough (sure they are online but im inpatient).
well if you still have the option, return that other controller and get a 360 wired.
Works great and you also have a controller to take to play on other peoples xboxs
edit: not sure about playstation controllers if you want to go that route
that's what im probably going to do in the morning tomorrow unless someone can confirm it works with a d pad.. i haven't been this excited to play a game in a while haha
Sticks help. If you want to save some dough get a logitech controller.
yeah i pretty much want to go the cheapest route. I'd hate to spend like 6x more than i paid for the game
You can get a Logitech one for around 12 bucks.

sweet! looks like im off to my local best buy in about 8 hours
Best Buy's in my area stopped carrying the Dual Action a long time ago. They now stock this model. I own both. I have the Logitech for a second PC. And this newer one is a lot nicer with more features. Its main selling point and the reason I upgraded is it includes a switch to toggle between DirectInput and XInput modes.
DirectInput is the API for collocting input from an Input Device(Mouse/Gamepad).
XInput is the API for the Xbox 360 controller.
What does that mean to you? We'll your controller will work with more games natively.

I would normally suggest getting a Xbox 360 wired controller off craigslist. Hands down the best controller. Especially for long play sessions. But they have problems with FFXI unless they fixed it. If not it just takes a little remapping or the use of an alternate software like Pinnacle Profiler or Xpadder(free).

Take my word for it; on the PC there is no better choice for playing Final Fantasy XI than the Logitech Rumblepad 2!
I bought it (along with the game itself) more than 7-8 years ago and after all these years i just restarted playing the game again and the gamepad is functioning wonderfully, down to its in-game vibration function, which usually does not work on my other games on the Win7(x64) platform.
Well, now that i made such a huge promotion/commotion for the Logitech, they will surely hire me or something, right?:D (Yeah, i doubt that)
