Honestly, I think this was a good call.
I still hold out great hopes for this game, and hope that people allow this indie developer the breathing space to fix what went wrong with this soft launch. I do think Xsyon has another chance... but I really hope it gets it right next time!

"Ultimately it's my responsiblity so here's what we're going to do:
We're going to need to wipe because of the data loss and multiple totems. I apologize, but that's the best solution.
The wipe will happen when the upgraded servers / server location is ready.
I've backed up the database and if possible we will restore tribes to their current locations. I will post details about how we will deal with this when I'm positive that we can. Any tribes / homesteads placed after this announcement will not be restored, so if you are joining us now, check out any enjoy the game and plan to situate yourself after the next wipe.
All players will get two weeks additional free play time. Effectively that makes March 15th our 'official launch' start. The actual start and final wipe will be as soon as possible once we have the new servers set up.
Again, I apologize for this rough start. We'll get over this bump soon!"

Can't complain with that at all, these guys are doing the best they can. Obviously the numbers hit far harder than they expected, but sorting this out ASAP along with 2 extra weeks of gametime is just a great move for the fans in this situation. Technically the game hasn't even launched yet, and this playtime before March 1st is just an extra pre-launch anyway, so an extra two proper weeks is very welcome.
I am saddened by the news, but I am happy with the open communication from Jooky regarding what is going to happen. He knows he made a couple mistakes and he admits it. I would rather be playing right now and it count, but I enjoy the game so much I can wait. I am usually a terrible pessimist, but for some reason or another I have been very optimistic about this game and I don't plan on changing now.
No Bs i love this game and the Devs MUUUUCHH better than big companys just made a new acc too write this
He did really well by posting this information as soon as he has. From the time servers were turned on last night, until today, he identified the problem and has a plan to address it. People haven't developed their lands or their characters enough that a wipe will be a "loss" for them.
The true test will be after the change of servers and he flips the switch for the "real thing". I ,for one though, have kept my expectations in check, and am enthusiastic about seeing what happens next.
Cheers!
They seem like a very dedicated group. I'm glad they are getting so much business and wish the best for them. So far they seem like straight shooters, very honest and accountable...something you don't always see with devs to be honest. It bodes well for the game, even though they are having some understandably difficult technical issues at the moment.
I'm perfectly okay with this. They are smart with releasing information as soon as they can, instead of holding back information and pissing people off.
I wish there was someway to save our character profiles. I finally got mine perfect....including basketry recipes for about 7 storage containers. The skill is not a main one but it is easy to raise once you get a lasher and weaver.. However...last time I built it up from 5 skill to 37 skill (starting without a container recipe)...gained about 25 more recipes..and not one was a container. Hard to do anything at all without storage . My plan was to stake out a homestead ..lonewolf it a while while raising some crafts up ,build a little home..and generally making myself a more useful and appealing prospect for joining a tribe. Oh well....I wrote all my stats...down to height and weight...and will probably keep remaking my character until I get the same or similiar basketry recipes after character re-spawn. I can bear waiting for a good trade or scavenging materials to make the tools for basketry (toolcraft being my main craft)..but the endless grinding of the skill only to be denied a container recipe is too frustrating. Especially since it's happened the same on two prior characters. Now that I know the recipes change each time...that might be the way I go to ensure a smoother start.
I hear ya, I got lucky and had the exact recipes I wanted but oh well.

BOOYAKA!
also keep in mind the official launch was pushed to march 15 (the ides!) so preorders still get a good headstart, maybe even a bigger headstart then before depending on how long it takes to get the new servers up and running.
I truly love this game and the the developer(s)
It's very worth it to me to ride out the storm. I give this guy a lot of credit for breaking the mold and doing it so well.
I just want Thursday night back, when we were playing without issue
I eagerly await the new servers and location!
LOL...Hate ...no..envious..perhaps. Honestly...both prior characters..lost after last 2 wipes..started at level 5 basketry and no container recipes. Not even a fukkin pouch. I grind one up to 25 and the last up to 37. NOT ONE FUKKIN CONTAINER RECIPE WAS LEARNED. It's just my luck that ...when I think I have my final character and happily discover I have around seven container recipes..that this situation happens and forces another wipe. Fuck it..I love the game anyway..but please make this the last wipe...please.....lol.
I breath of fresh air!
Finally an Indie company that communicates in an open an honest manner, who knows when they have screwed up, admits it and makes the hard decisions quickly to get back on track.
The decision to stabalise the environment, get the new servers onboard , perform the wipe and extend the launch time in my opinion was the right one.
Underlying all this is one of the best kept secrets of 2011. A sandbox game that is truely a gem.
Even though Xsyon is going through a rocky start it is underpinned by a great game, dedicated developers and a great community.

You know, even with the problems they're having, their honesty and being up front about what's going on is very refreshing. You don't see developers taking responsibility like they have, most just lie and try to cover things up. This development team is no joke, I can't wait to see how this project develops over time.

Yes sounds great , but have they said when the new servers will be up.. or are we just hanging until whenever ? i read the dev report and he never said o i will have the new servers up on this date . i wonder how happy we will be when the first comes and goes and still nothing.. hmm. they need to be a bit more clear..
I would check often, starting tomorrow.

I dont see this happening for at least a week or two, they probably gave 2 free weeks for a reason, its going to happen in that kind of timeframe.
Since the "launch" mad rush is kind of dwindling, and theres less people downloading the client from shared bandwith that the servers running the game use....well lag has slightly improved. Once the sunday afternoon peak traffic moved on, the server began to act normal. Just a short while ago, the server host did maintianence, right before that the server had preformed quite well for several hours.
I think a large portion of that initial rush now has the client, and is probably going to wait untill the final wipe. So i think this week youll be able to get some decent time in game to experement and try things out.
I just hope they wipe the totem locations, id like to participate in a real land grab, and have learned in my time playing so far, that its not really a huge deal where you pick your totem location to be...close to water and a junk pile. I think people tend to be overly paranoid due to the pvp aspect, and are trying to get junk piles within their totem safezone, and possbily a water source as well...which limits your options but isnt needed. Just find some off spot, kind of close to water and near a junk pile and your fine. Also, not sure if you can terraform a river to run near you, which would be cool, but i dont think you can...havent really looked at terraforming yet.
I would check often, starting tomorrow.

THIS is why I love this game, right here, this thread. Of all the places on the interwebz, of all the forums for games out there, this place...MMORPG.COM has been the one with the reputation of being the most negative in its community. And yet look at this thread right here. NG had some hickups on thier headstart launch, games going a bit rough, and still...look at this thread! Not a negative comment in the bunch the entire way through. NO GAME that has released in the past 2 years has had this kind of posative support from the community on these forums. If this isn't proof enough about how good this game is, how great the devs are, and how tight the community is going to become. Right here, this is all anyone needs to know about Xsyon, the rest is gravy.
That's because the designers have been honest and upfront with everyone telling them the truth about what's going on. If you want to document a good way to communicate with your player base, this is a project you want to emulate. People are sick of developers that lie to them, they want the truth. Things happen, things go wrong, but don't lie to us and try to cover things up.
I know a few high-profile developers who could learn a thing or two here but probably never will because of pride.

I have been thinking about getting a refund for this game since I heard that the developers were good about giving refunds for pre-order customers and because I'm not exactly a fan of some the systems in play, but I can't bring myself to do it because this has to be one of the best MMO, if not gaming in general, companies. I know my $40 isn't a lot in the grand scheme of things, but I hope it sends a message to other developers that the community really appreciates honesty and hard work.

You can terraform a river to run towards you. You just can not have it climb a hill or drop off a mountain creating a waterfall.
It's a great call and I really like Notorious Games (the developers). Jooky and the GM's have been very upfront with us and are keeping us all in the loop. 2 extra free weeks play and you can still play the game while we wait for the new servers and a wipe is a nice bonus.
that is great to hear.
However, as much as i like the fact that totems are not pvp related and you cant get your camp wiped by anyone...imagine the possiblities to terraform, making moats and land obsticals....like a defensive structure...would be fun. Perhaps they can add something specific and attackable later on, that could take advantage of the terraforming function. Mabey like serveral tribes banding toghether to make a nation, while the individual tribe totems are safe zones, they would get to build a nation capital that could be attacked. Would be fun and add about a dumptruck worth of sand into the game...possibly make some of the hardcore pvpers happier too. I know a lot of them are pushing for no safe zones, which would wreck a lot of the fun in building something nice around your totem.
