Thanks guys. We had our first successful Valkurm Dunes party last night (which brought back memories of just how deadly IT goblins are) but it was a blast, and we had one person who had been on for about 20 hrs lol. And at any given time yesterday we had between 15-20 people on, talking and doing stuff. Good times!
Yeah, that 20 hour binge was a bit ridiculous. My house was clean and I was all caught up on school work so I just went a little nuts. Haven't done anything like that since I was 19. xD
I'm still tryin to get my wifey to take the plunge. She was a really good red mage back in the day.
Anyway, just bumping the thread so it stays on the home page of updated posts. Come join us, we're awesome!

Ok finally got in this morning, got a couple questions if anyone could answer them, that would be great. I can't seem to find any official forums so I guess this is my best bet.
How can I turn my name off on my own character? I spent around two hours this morning fiddling with the registry to get the game to look somewhat decent with my resolution, but I cant turn my own name off. My name looks awful and jagged, and I'd like to turn it off if possible. Never found an option to do so.
Also, next to people names what are the symbols? Next to my name I have a "?" for some reason, can't find any explanation on what this means. This is going to sound awful terrible, but keep in mind I have not played a FF game since around 1997. How the hell do I bind "Attack" to a key bind? My key bindings in the in game options seem to do nothing. I had to change it to compact keyboard in order to get WASD, but after that, nothing I change on the keybindings does anything. I am just trying bind "Attack" to a key. It wont let me bind number keys to anything either. I can't even seem to figure out how to use any abilities without going through a menu to do it. Right now if I want to attack something, I have press "Y" key, then press enter or click on "Attack". Seems so conterintuitive to me.
Anyways, never felt like I was so lost playing any MMO's in like 10 years lol. Does this game need a gamepad to work? My keyboard feels completely useless atm due to not being able bind any keys.
So I randomly stubled across this thread via a google search. I played FFXI way back when but haven't played it for real since about 2005. I would love to do something like this. I actually just checked and I still have my old character, but I would love to play another class through the low level stuff again. I will try to get all the updates done tonight and can hopfully play soon.

There are no Official Forums, at least not for the past 8yrs, but SE has finally approved them and they go into beta in April and they'll launch in May.

You can't turn off your name, but there are mods out there to change the font and other UI options to make it much more crisp and clear. I don't recall what the mod name is atm, but I'll get back to you on that when I find it again. {I'm in the process of getting FFXI reinstalled and working and I'll be using that mod when I relocate it} Also check here for several guides on how to properly setup FFXI from the External config, In-game config, windower, and registry editing, as well as many other guides for finding certain types of NPCs. We also have links to every possible official and unofficial website for XI too, that include the Online AH, FFXIclopedia and Maps of all the zones, and timers for all the various clocks and features...etc
Also, next to people names what are the symbols? Next to my name I have a "?" for some reason, can't find any explanation on what this means. The red ?indicates that you are a new character to others and I believe will automatically go away after some 48hrs, but you can manually remove it now from the Help Desk in your UI Menu, The M in a circle means they are a mentor and willing to help other players with questions, so ask them...{these are players whom have chosen to do this} The colored dots are the Linkshells of guilds of FFXI, and to see their name you have to inspect that player and under the INV their name will be displayed.
Key Binding I don't think you could ever change, so you need to learn how to play with KB only using full or compact as they are set or get a controller. As far as I recall WASD and a mouse are very poor in XI, so I wouldn't bother attempting to play that way. FFXI is a very heavy use of macros, which is found in your menu, {press - on your numpad to open it btw} then open the macros and in that guides link I posted above you'll find a guide on how to write macros, then afterward you use them by pressing and holding ALT or CTRL to open them at the top of the screen and the arrow keys to scroll through pages and left/right and enter to activate.
Its a very different playstyle that can be trying for a new player used to the modern day MMOs, but give it some time and you'll pick it up, or just get a controller and it'll play identical as to if you're playing a console FF title.
Anyways, never felt like I was so lost playing any MMO's in like 10 years lol. Does this game need a gamepad to work? My keyboard feels completely useless atm due to not being able bind any keys.
Again, the keyboard works just fine too play XI with, but its very different and you have to use their preset keys, with heavy use of their menu, and yes a controller works well for some, while others like me have always used KB exclusively!
And on this note, I'm in such the mood to play XI, and have done everything possible to get POL to launch, which is just doesn't seem to want to work, thus I've for the past few hours been sifting through my 1TB HDD, and have deleted more than 400GB of data I don't really need and condensing it all down to my 2 Backup HDDs of 200 and 300GB...ROFL I've tested POL on my other PC that much older than this new one with a fresh install of Win7 and it works fine so somewhere there must be a conflict I havn't been able to locate and fix, and I suppose a fresh install here could be good anyway.
Then I'll begin the arduous task of formatting, reinstalling Win7 and everything else per usual to get back up and running. Thankfully before I deleted FFXI in an attempt to get POL working I did backup all my patches so getting into XI won't take long after all the above is complete...muhahahaah...mehmehmeh.../sob'
hey saw this post been wanting to play this game ever since it released.I'm in the process of Downloading now. What continent is everyone on and who do I get in touch with for the LS. I'll be playing with the char name Brewtulus.
A fine post. I played FFXI back in 2003 for about six months. Absolutely adored the community, but the game itself is far too slow (not so much the leveling speed--that was perfect--but mechanics such as the combat).
Just bought and downloaded the game shortly after reading this thread. Looking forward to playing on the Titan server (that is after this 9 hour update is finished...) =p
Dont worry my DL said 8 hours but only ended up taking 3 or so.
Thats irrelevant. Just becuase the price of the game is a great deal, a better value than the sub fee, doesn't mean that the sub fee is not a great deal or good value.
Assuming you will want our help, your attitude is pretty selfish. And if you don't want our help...why even play an mmorpg?
Anyway, have fun in the game. Maybe you will change your mind. Never say never.

I did't know new content was free... You know, all the jobs/new missions/zones/items etc...
I'm pretty sure subs helped pay for that. Saying your money is being "taken" is a little extreme.
Subs are paying for the services of the game that go beyond what came inside the boxed version of the game.
Complaining about paying 12 bucks a month after buying a huge game for $5 with hours upon hours of content that was pretty much built upon subs from loyal fans is just silly.
If you dont want to pay the sub thats fine. Im sure you can find a f2p game out there you will enjoy.

i did not know that the new things are made monthly.
seriously no game has ever justified a montly fee to me. you are just a sheep like the rest
at this moment i do not have the income to support any monthly fee. especially not when i am paying $144 a year for it.
there is no justifying that much unless it is the best thing ever. even wow (hated that so much) was never worth it.

Another spiteful remark. Just because you cant afford it does not mean its not justified.
Thank you OP. I'm glad to see someone else who knows the real reason alot of folks play MMOs Unfortunately for me, my clump started with WoW again, instead of FFXI...but we did give it a short stint last summer.
Glad to see people still sharing interest in the game, years later.
Glad to see people still playing this wish I had the 5.00 to plop down on it this week and I'd get back in there used to be on the Pandemonium Server when I played.

Sheep? Just cause others can afford to pay out per month for a game that makes them sheep? 144.00 a year isn't much compared to other forms of entertainment that is to be had in a year. Just going to the movies 6 times in a year will cost that. But to call people sheep because you're a cheap ass to pay for something is unwarranted.
As for my first day I want to thank Ray and the rest for making me feel welcome and at home. It's been over 5 or 6 years since I stepped foot in Vanadiel and so much has changed. Changes that I wished that Square had made long ago. I can tell how some of the changes were influenced by the current trends in MMO's. For one is soloing, you can actually solo in FFXI now and make it worthwhile.
There is a really good group forming and I think there will be enough people on to get through most if not all of the lower level content. I can't wait to see some of the new stuff.
How does this title sound: "FFXI Reformed, Vana'diel Revisited"

Ok thanks for the answers, really appreciate it.
Yeah I am having a way too dificult time playing with my normal keyboard and mouse. I will keep trying but it's rough thanks again.

Even with all the recent changes this past year to make it a more engaging experience and slightly more modern, its still one of the most unique MMOs.
I only hope that future MMOs pick up the "Level sync" concept along with a few other things
Glad to see people still playing this wish I had the 5.00 to plop down on it this week and I'd get back in there used to be on the Pandemonium Server when I played.
