Town invasions are Epic

gessekai332gessekai332 Member UncommonPosts: 861

This is the only game that I've seen town invasions done right. its really one of the few times i was really awestruck in an mmorpg. Right as I was handing in my quest to get some equipment this massive legion of monsters starts flying through the gates crushing everything in its path, accompanied by several enormous tree giants things that were like 3 stories high. then at some point everyone from all over the area came and banded together and proceeded to fight back the invading force. it was awesome, tons of people and monsters dying left and right, players flying around because of the massive aoe knockback from the giant tree smacking people around. and to top it all off... NO GRAPHICS LAG?!? this was really bizzarre to me because there were easily 100+ people and monsters on the screen yet my computer did not shut down like it did in games like aoc, warhammer, and aion. I had graphics all the way up and im on a laptop lol.

i really thought at first that this rift system was some crappy gimmick when i saw it on youtube and when i first encountered the "beginner" rift when i started the game. however about 1 or two hours in you start to get a feel for how everything works and boy does it work pretty good :). they somehow make you feel like there really is a purpose to fending off these rifts and its not just some lame grind to make you waste your time. also i heard someone complain earlier on that they felt that there were too many invasions that i it was annoying because you couldnt quest or anything. i thought this at first but then i realized that its only once in several days where you will get a day full of invasions. i feel bad for trying to overhype this game but its the first game in a while that really exceeded my expectations and i feel like i can comfortably play it for a long time.

good job trion, and see you all on the 24th :).

Most memorable games: AoC(Tryanny PvP), RIFT, GW, GW2, Ragnarok Online, Aion, FFXI, FFXIV, Secret World, League of Legends (Silver II rank)

Naa I didnt take your post as overhyping it at all...

Those who say 'its gonna rake in 4 million subs in a month!!' are the ones who over do it.

About the invasions I agree with you, they can be pretty damn epic at times lol,I find them to be really fun, more so than the Rifts themselves.

I also find the invasions awesome. I will be subbing to rift also. After playing wow on/off for the past 4 years I'm pretty burnt out and need a fresh new experience like Rift. I was really enjoying my Elementalist and probably will probably roll it at release. Though,  I do wish there were 3 starting zones for each faction as going through those quest on my alts will definitely be boring, but all is good.

I would have to agree with some of this. The first few times you encounter a big invasion, it does seem pretty epic. The technical aspect was also very excellent as there was no lag at all. From my pespective, the problem with Rift as with all MMOs is that no matter how 'epic' anything really seems it really can't be 'epic' in the sense of some of the great stories whether they be fact or fiction. Since there is no way to lose and there is no real risk ( the town is still going to be there no matter what), the epic feeling fades rather quickly for me.  However if you simply want to jump into quick combat and have alot of it without having to do too much searching, Rift is your game.

Definite bump.  Closest to epic I ever got was the fact that I would be level 28 in some forest somewhere in my own country in Dark Age of Camelot - and I would see an announcement that the enemy just took a precious relic from my king's relic castle  - which had only been reachable after a huge mass of enemy army (call them the zerg!) captured a few other castles after dropping from ships onto our shores.  Once that relic made it to be stored in an enemy castle far across the Irish Sea in a place called Hibernia, I saw that a minute later that my magic dps was a little bit lower - like 10% lower.  I also saw that my loot had lessened by a tiny bit.

"Ah, I told myself that fateful day, the Kingdom of Hibernia has stolen the Staff of Merlin - how angry he must be - how angry we all must be."

A minute later my guild was chattering about building a huge counter offensive through our alliance.  Over three hundred players took ships to Hibernia, jumped off on the coastline and under a good raid leader proceeded to take Hibernian castles to get their relic gates to drop at a relic keep.  Meanwhile, a second offensive was launched to retake our own lost keeps.  I couldn't wait to hit 50 and help my realm protect its territory.  I couldn't wait to cross over onto Viking or Celt shore lines - to face a distant and mysterious enemy.

    Now that's epic!

Today - if I want enemy I merely have to level to like 10 - chances are they are in the same quest area.  And pvp?  No one cares except for their own gratification.  In Rfts or any other title it matters not at all if your guild or mine is winning or losing.  No one in a forest leveling alone will ever know the difference.

    Epic

In old Ultima Online I was in the main town trying to get over the uber lag and buying scrolls when all of a sudden at least 30 Blood Elementals came out of the north mage guild and ate everyone.  Then they moved down town.  And ate everyone excepth a few tamers that had dragons.

I rezzed and caught one near the healer shack.  Para, E bolt repeat.  I got a Vanq Spear!

    Epic for 1999.

That is cool.  Many I miss the style of the old titles.  Like when we look at a steel bodied muscle car from the 1960s.  Today's stuff has so much fluff but we all know a good bicycle crash and today's modern sports car is trashed lol.  We get eye candy but in reality everything that looks like solid metal is just plastic and fake.

I saw something similiar to the OP last evening- was really fun times overall. I do have to add that if events like this are something you really look forward to you might enjoy a PvP server as Rift appears to be a very World PvP friendly game on those servers. You're likely to see city invasions attempted.
