As for my first day I want to thank Ray and the rest for making me feel welcome and at home. It's been over 5 or 6 years since I stepped foot in Vanadiel and so much has changed. Changes that I wished that Square had made long ago. I can tell how some of the changes were influenced by the current trends in MMO's. For one is soloing, you can actually solo in FFXI now and make it worthwhile.
There is a really good group forming and I think there will be enough people on to get through most if not all of the lower level content. I can't wait to see some of the new stuff.
How does this title sound: "FFXI Reformed, Vana'diel Revisited"
I'm with ya, Ink. Can't wait to see the stuff I've missed out on over the years of being away. Awesome dunes group last night. The linkshell is sure forming up nice! I'm gonna try to get my sub class quest done tonight. I'm getting pretty excited to get that scholar job.
And I dig that title!

Boo at Maintenance.
Just curious. I've been asked a few times. Do you guys think we need a forum or something outside of the game to communicate?
also, who else is playing FFXIV because of maint.?

FFXIV on Behemoth, FFXI on Eden, and Gloria Victis on NA.
Been thinking about that, and if I'm able to solve the problems I'm having and actually be able to play soon; I'm willing to let you all use our Linkshell forums. They're already heavily setup for use with FFXI and FFXIV, and we have a 15-slot Ventrilo server collecting dust, yet its still good for another 10-months. Its been rather barren over here since XIV kinda failed and all, for now, and most of our remaining members are about to play Rift or are busy with other MMOs and games.
I just wanna play and have fun with others and not worry about leading an LS or Guild or whatever for now...all the MMOs I've been interested in and built forums for have failed miserably and I tire of losing all that preperation work time and again.
ah ok thanks i'm thinking about rolling a black mage or a white mage what you need more?
Last time they said anything about jobs, they said the needed damage dealers...and they DON'T need tanks or healers...so black mage. But that was awhile ago, and it's more important to play what you like. Besides, you can change your job back and forth at anytime if you change your mind.
I'm guessing scholar is the best subjob for mages now?
What do you mean by 'best?' Do you mean best for the linkshell, or best for playing the job in general? It probably depends on what mage too. Go to ffxiclopedia.com and you can search for jobs and read the guides at the bottom of the job pages for what works best for each job.
Hello, join the Linkshell on Sunday (Halfhand)...was my birthday weekend (yay) so didn't have much time to play. I normally like support classes in game, so I created a WHM. Got him to level 10 by last night. I have a few questions.
#1 - All guides I look at talk about sub-jobs. I'm new so obviously won't have any. At what point should I start leveling other jobs?
#2 - It looks like the LInkshell already has quite a few WHM and needs some DDs instead. I was debating between MNK and THF. Or possibly MNK subbing thief at some point. Any pointers or ideas on what to start first? I'm new and won't have the gil to buy weapons/armor trying to switch jobs too often.

Heya, Halfhand!
Well, once you hit level 18, you can finish your sub job quest, and that's when people usually start leveling other jobs. There's a guy in Selbina that kicks it off for you, he's over by the water near some fishing nets. You can get the three quest items before you have the quest. So if you get a crab apron, a damselfly worm or a magicked skull, hang on to em.
I'm one of the WHM you prolly saw, but in the end, I'll be a scholar full time. I'm like you, I dig the support thing so I can't offer any advice on the DD scene. xD

EDIT: Oh, and I read your blog, Ink. It was awesome. Very well said, I couldn't agree more with your sentiments.

Thanks Istafein. I didn't know there was even a quest to start the subjob. So I guess I'll have to decide between MNK or THF and switch over from my WHM.

If you enjoy playing white mage, play white mage!
I was debating swapping to a DD too, but I've always thought I was good at white mage (maybe I'm not, who knows) so I'm sticking with it for me. The beauty of this linkshell is that we are playing the way we want to play, so if you want to play anything, play whatever you want.
I was behind as of this morning I was only level 11...
I'm not level 15, thanks to my LS mates.. it won't take long to catch up.

I found it pretty easy to get to 10. Maybe I'll stick with the WHM to 18 and finish the subjob quest then switch to MNK. At least I would have Cure to help out the first 10 levels then. I think I have mostly settled on Mnk/Thf after more reading.

Yeah, I'm with Ray on this one. And I'm sure everyone would be too. Ya gotta play what makes ya happy. Don't let what we all are determine what you play, cuz people are constantly changing their jobs early on.
Plus, early on, I think a lot of people play a WHM just for a sub job. So a lot of the WHM's you see prolly won't be for long.

lol this was exactly my newbie mistake when I first started playing FFXI.
I rolled a MNK to 18, did the subjob quest, then started a WHM so that I could heal myself if necessary... what I failed to realize is that although one has the freedom to mix any 2 jobs the way they see fit, it is highly advisable to mix jobs that compliment eachother, especially when you consider that you're not expected to solo through the whole game, but instead, group up people and form many different types of party compositions.... for instance:
MNK stats that improve their combat performance: STR STA DEX
WAR stats that improve their combat performance: STR STA DEX
SAM stats that improve their combat performance: STR DEX AGI
THF stats that improve their combat performance: DEX AGI STR
WHM stats that improve their combat performance: MND .... yeah, MND
So, would adding WHM points to your MNK improve how he/she performs in combat? Not really... for it would be the same as not having a subjob at all, since the MNK has low MND to begin with. However, mixing warrior and monk, for instance, would greatly increase your STR and STAM bonuses, thus making your MNK hit harder and have more HP (if I remember correctly, Monk had the highest base/increasing HP of all the classes)
This is not a troll, flame, or anything else worth banning me over. It is simply my pure opinion, and I have a right to share it.
Chi Blast is affected by MND. Other than that I don't think there is a big reason to pick WHM. I saw WAR had good synergy for early levels, but later THF was good for ditching unwanted aggro onto tanks.
Allright you have talked me into it, Im not really interested in the "new" MMOs out there at the moment, and Ive been looking for some nostalgic game play. Incoming Corsaire!
Im hoping this works out, Ive played FFXI a number of times, but the failing is always in the lfg. Seems like you could waste countless hours waiting to find a group. Ive wanted to play a corsair/ranger so bad Ive tried it a few times. Ive got my fingers crossed that this time will be different.

I think a forum or some way to communicate outside the game is a great idea. Organize events and beach parties and stuff. xD
