are there any melee/swordfighting games out there or coming out?
no i dont mean 'push m1 and see your character do a predesigned 3 swing combo' like dynasty warriors, gunz, pretty much all mmos actually (yes even upcoming swtor, i doubt youll have ability to actually fight rather than see your char do stuff). you dont simply call a game 'swordfighting game' if it involves swords. heck you could replace them with bananas and nothing would change apart from it visually being something else.
i mean something more freestylish like
blade of darkness, dark messiah or my all time favorites - jedi knight 1-3.
in jedi knight 3: jedi academy all you had was a simple yet freestylish combat system which took time to get hang of it and then you could use all kinds of tactics and ways to use all those moves thus mastering the game completely was almost impossible.
also since most of the gameplay was practising and learning more and more - it was quite a good social game with great communities. also since players success really depended on players skill - it had some competitive scene going... and it was competitive even between friends or public servers - nothing beats a good duel.
Kwonho was a bit simillar, it was a martial arts mmo which played like street fighter. however it was plagued by lags and stuff like that and it was shut down.
so.... anything simillar?

The only game I can think of is Mount and Blade. Its not an MMO, though it is rather fun.
I self identify as a monkey.
ah forgot to mention that one as well. its quite good and has the kind of freestylishness that i admire. however it has less emphasis on actual fight mechanics, but more on general flow of the game.
the game as a whole is quite dynamic, but the combat system is not.
in the end you are just left to hammer your opponents shield before he does the same to you.
when both of you are without shields then it takes some prediction and luck to survive and the fight is yours.
that doesnt cut it for me though.
If you have jedi academy try playing moviebattles2 mod for it, its fun and populated. http://moviebattles.com/
Here is half decent video of saber fight

Check Tera out.
Edit: sorry didn't read! haha, my recommend was Jedi Academy xD
Mount and Blade, however it isn't a persistent online world.
And Tera Online
Since they are coming from the mindset of total freedom of aim/slice/pitch/yaw/etc (I mean total freedom), i'm not sure either of those games suit what this person is after.
I can't speak for M&B but TERA uses a preset of combo/skill animations, the only "freestyle" aiming you do is direction (from what i've seen anyways)
yea, used to play it. its one of the best mods ever created for any game imo.
i think its content surpasses licensed game like battlefront. just shows how bad proffesionals can be lol.
i dont really need a huuuuuge world to play in, but indepth combat system.
people loving to duel, chattin while doing so etc
Vindictus..... only 2 downsides: dungeon crawl style + mostly instanced (enough to keep me away from it) but its still a good game worth trying out
not available in europe ;p
and the system is not freestyle. spaming left mouse button is not a swordfighting game.... like i said in my original post...
check out age of chivalry (source mod)
is this free to play? i mean free to download? been hearing a lot of this game from my friends
i was quite interested in age of chivalry some time ago, but...
the community is really small.
the game itself... unpolished.
the mechanics are extremely lacking, a player like myself looking for combat system that while difficult would make sense... well i didnt find it. without any lag whatsoever i proceeded to use my two handed axe to strike enemy twice in the BACK.
so he just turned around and killed me.
what.
that and some other things really put me off.
