Good luck to all new games..you'll need it

It's becoming apparent that a fairly large percentage of mmo'rs have become 'new game' junkies. For a long time now I've been listening to the 'next game will kill this game' statement since the eary days of UO but now I actually believe it's not really the games that are going to kill the rest but the gamers. They eat new games like new content and once only a corpse remains they move on to the next big thing all the while wearing blinders to anything decent or well made amongst the debris of what was a decent game. My current game is DC universe online and it's really a change of pace from the normal mmo but what most seem to get out of it is how easy it is to level in it and completely seem to miss the great voice overs and game play.

It's the usual race to the cap followed by "I'm bored..or I'm looking for something to do". Now this game is not really about leveling but more about what takes place at 30 but even that became a farce as pvp became an exploit fest. Personally, it's given me a game I can play a character in a style I want and make the game as hard (or easy) as I want but the average gamer can only see how powerful they can get and then complain the game is too easy.

So, I really hope all new games make a go of it as I hate to see any game fail subscriber wise as that leaves those that really like a game left holding the bag. The time continuem has been damaged as I heard someone yesterday exclaim that all his old buddies from the early days are gone now (in a game not yet 2 months old) and that the game is dieing which isn't true at all but the voracious 'new gamers' are moving on to the devour the next game, chew it up and spit it out and proclaim it's 'done'.

I'm really concerned that most games have very little chance of lasting a year as a viable and growing game because if they game isn't easily digested it just won't grow much like many new shows on television vanish after a few episodes before they can hit their stride and develop a following. It just seems a shame that so many work so hard on games they must care so much about only to have them used to feed a habit that can never be appeased. To any of you that love your current game: enjoy it while you can.

Im fairly sure gamers would just hate and hate more thenas they get to high school/college/after college they decide "OH FFS WTF ARE WITH THESE DESIGNERS??" and make their own indie group and make a game that would bring forth a new generation of funner games.

Oh who am I kidding all the kiddies today WANT WoW clones.

    Edit :

All the kiddies want WoW clones whether they know it or not.

I blame all the indie groups trying to make 'funner games' for making games that are generally so horrible and substandard that people think that non-WoW mechanics go hand in hand with being a bad game.

Theres a few things that contribute to the whole devouring a game an dmoving on thing youre talking about:

    1) Bad support - Some companies just plain havent figured out how to provide even half decent support for their players & games even though theyve been in business for years. When an issue comes up in a game, such as the massive exploiting in DCUO, people expect those issues to be taken care of swiftly without a whole bunch of beating around the bush and PR bullshit. When you start getting into situations where a company refuses to just come out and acknowledge ther eis a major problem, theyre working on it, an ETA for it being fixed, and consequences for those who abuse the exploits & bugs it turns a lot of people off.

Now I know that not eveerything can be fixed immediately, it can take days/weeks sometimes. But in SOE's case with DCUO it not only took them several weeks to (only partially) fix major game breaking bugs/exploits, but they were very tight lipped about it. Rather than unleashing the ban hammer on people the instant proof was given of them exploiting, those exploiters (several of whom there were dozens of forum threads, videos, etc about) were allowed to simply keep playing and ruining the experienc efor other players. It kind of goes along the same lines as people who refuse to play certain games that are loaded with goldbot/seller spam because no action is taken by the staff to get rid of them. It causes a big loss in faith in the developer because if they cant even properly handle known exploiters, how the hell are they expected to properly support everything else in the game? Next time theres a huge exploit found, will it again take them several weeks to fix while half the players run around abusing it?

    2) Too much EZ mode & cloning - Unfortunately the target audience for most MMO Developers has change. Rather than the "old days" of MMOs being targeted at more of a niche group of people who actually enjoyed the challenge some games presented and loved investing time being immersed in that virtual world they are instead targetting the masses of people who 10 years ago were either too young or ignorant too know what an MMORPG is. By targetting that audience theyve switched to designing games to be very easily mastered by millions rather than a select few. Theyve figured out that most of those people dont like change, all they care about is that "reward" they get for completing the most simple & mundane tasks, even if its the same task theyve been doing over and over for years. As a result, anyone can pick up the majority of new MMOs, blow through the content in a few days / weeks without having to learn anything new to master the new game, then they get to the end and realize "Hey this is the exact same game i was playing before, only with a different name & characters" and move onto the next game claiming to be seeking something new, but in reality... (see point 3)

    3) People hate originality - That doesnt apply to everyone, but unfortunately does apply to the majority of gamers nowadays. Just look at the history of gaming and how things have evolved over the decades. Back in the 80s & 90s most of the games that added new features & concepts, innovation, and complete reworking of some mechanics wer eusually the biggest hits and were met with a ton of praise & loyal fans.

Now look at the past 10 years. There have been a few lucky ones along the way that brought change to the gaming world and succeeded, but for the most part any developer who stepped outside of the norm to try to do something new was met with bashing/hating and cries of "this is too hard compared to this other game" or "i could do this in X game, why cant i also do it in Y game, even though Y game offers me 20 things that X game didnt" or of course the graphics kiddies who cry "omg graphics arent the best of any game ever made, this game sucks, blah blah blah".

Its caused a very stagnant state for the MMO genre. Investors are afraid to put loads of money into something completely original because they know that if they just copy everything thats out there already there and that people like it is a safer bet. They dont want to invest all that money into something that they dont know wether or not people will like. All it takes is some nice looking graphics, a few flashy ads and some good PR talk, and theyve got a horde of people drooling to buy their new game without ever even researching the fine details of the game & its features. they dont care about the longevity of the game as long as they make their profit within the first couple months because of the millions buying their game. In comparison, back in the times of UO, EQ, etc they had a much smaller base to work with and if they wanted to make a profit they had to work very hard to keep those few thousand people playing & paying.

Only players that played WoW for a month or two would want a clone.

DCUO is fun as hell, it just needs 2 more years worth of content already to have more replay value.

Oh, hit me right in the heart! :)

I'm prolly one of these move-on-ers you refer to., and I also played DCUO........ and moved on. DCUO will probably be ubah in 2 years, but, I wont give it another try even in two years........ great combatmechanisms, but really after doing the same duo/alert for the 20th time, and battleground for the 50th time, i had enough of it. Its a great game if you are a repeat grinder og a battleground-holic, though I got bored. Didnt complain about to little to do or anything, i just plainly quit. I kinda loved the fast level pace of the game, but really, factions are just two sides so one can fight a bit between eachother. There are no world mechanics that set the two factions up against eachother, or make the fight over anything, its just a pure open world gank-fest (I love open world pvp, but C'mon, you get bored when its all about just ganking someone roaming in a xp area for the soul reason of ganking,....... no skill, no thrill, just spawn and head for a new dawn!

But yeah, someone needs to invent game mechanics that doesnt rely on either raiding/gearhamstering or battleground/warfront as end game content. Still waiting for a good multifaction meaningful world pvp MMORPG to play :)

And hence........ I move on to the next thing, allways searching for a true MMO home.

image  You do have a point.  And a helluva way of putting it.

But for me, the power gamer pvpeens are much worse than any bug or half-done content.

In other threads, people have called these guys locusts, and I have to agree that's what they are.  They chew through everything in a matter of days or weeks, ruin everything for everyone else, and then get bored and move on.

I am convinced there is only one way to eliminate these grave evils, namely through the establishment of a socialist economy, accompanied by an educational system which would be oriented toward social goals.

How about: It's like eating at McDonalds because all the French restaurants you went to were French.

I gotta agree with Meowhead. MMOs the past couple of years have been full of great ideas with absolutely horrible implementation and buggy unfinished releases. Players will not put up with an unpolished game anymore and for the most part they don't give second chances, you get one first impression it better be damn good.

Can you provide evidence of what games and "originality" you are talking about? From my experience, I don't really see people complain "This game is too hard" as a reason for it failing. Instead, it's usually "This game is full of bugs." or "My computer can't run this game." or "There's nothing original here, it's a WoW-clone but without the WoW-quality."

Please enlighten me as to what games failed or lost thousands fo players because of "it's too hard" or "why can't I do this in the game?"

I really don't think developers are punished for being original or stepping outside the box. They're punished for implementing ideas which don't change the real problems, and original features which are cool-- but take away development time from better unoriginal features.

In comparison, back in the times of UO, EQ, etc they had a much smaller base to work with and if they wanted to make a profit they had to work very hard to keep those few thousand people playing & paying.

Ultima Online, Dark Age of Camelot, and EVerquest 1 had massive populations in the hundreds of thousands, certainly NOT "a few thousand people".

In fact, after the first free month wears out and MMO's begin to be abandoned, UO, DAoC, and EQ1's primetime populations in their days are massive compared to the leftovers of today's MMO's.

What MMO's can say they even have more than one server? Just look at Vanguard or Warhammer-- two recent MMORPG's which have such low populations that UO, EQ, and DAoC in their prime make them look like small fries in comparison.

Sure, I don't know what populations which games have, but these classics you mention had far more than "a few thousand people" and compared to the hundreds of MMO games out today (including browser MMO's) they were many many many times more popular.

If being a developer means being quiet, mature, well-spoken, and disconnected from the community, then by all means do me a favor and believe I'm not one.

Because games aren't worlds anymore, they're just clones of WoW. If clones like Rift are successful, the U.S. MMO market is over. When innovation stops you're done as a company.

The only MMO I'm interested in right now are Asian MMO like Archeage or European MMO. WoW clones have jumped the shark.

You talk about playing the game for a few months, then getting bored and moving on, as if it is a bad thing. It may be bad for the game developer, but it is not bad for the player. To play the first month of a new MMO you are spending about the same money as you would spend to play a single player game. And how many single player games do you play for more than a month?

I often buy mmos fully intending not to play past the first month. I want to look at it, see new things, enjoy playing for a month and move on to something else. Ocassionally a game is good enough to keep me playing, but I don't expect that by default.

I LIKE DCUO but Im not willing to wait for the PS3 patches to be released so they can patch the PC version. specially when the problems bugs and exploits plaguing the game are 10 thousand times more widespread in the PC version, so it makes absolutly no sense waiting for the PS3 patch to be validated and release both at the same time.

this is the first and last game I buy that is also for consoles. PS3 development standards suck and delay releases by a damn huge lot.

When developers are making easy soloable fast paced MMOs there is no reason to slow down and enjoy anything.  MMOs are like easy low quality single player games now, why would you want to play them for a long time?
