I am having fun, not sure what people mean by unorginal games, as all stories and movies are all based on some prior story and same with games.

This is a fresh coat of paint and new story, I am having fun this is after playing WoW for awhile, UO, DAOC, and EvE.

    My honest opinion on RIft

    BEST GAME EVER.

The games I really enjoyed most in the past

    Everquest

    Everquest 2

    World of Warcraft

Rift takes the best of all these games and adds it's own spice and it's ohh so nice.

If you are a fan of the classic MMORPG stylings of any of these previous games you will absolutely go gaga over Rift.

It starts off with kid gloves spoon feeding you as many tutorials in these large games do, but around level 6 the training wheels come off and it lets you go anywhere and do anything and expands on that as you go. The large assortment of things to do will keep you busy for a long long time. I can see Endgame being just as fun as the rest of this game.

It's a winner. Buy and start playing....and don't look back.

Overall good game but a few little things nag me:

    • There's a debuff for 'running away' just because there is a mob behind you.

    • Rift contribution rewards spamming useless abilities

    • Having to stand still for mounting and non insta-casts

    • Crafting is not very good, mechanically similar to other games but the balance and time sinking is out of whack

    • I cannot speak for end game but the basic mechanics are heading towards faction grinding in a big way

    • They need some kind of indicators for role because LFG is confusing when you have several builds and just saying 'cleric' doesnt mean you can be main healer. I come from a background where you adapt according to who is in your pug, but I realise most players are used to being fussier who they choose.

    • PVP and rifts are heavily biased towards ranged dps. With rifts its just too hard meleeing because there is no solid tanking because tanks dont get rewarded for their contribution fairly, so you're better off spamming ranged attacks even if they do a lot less damage. In PVP, ranged souls such as saboteur are simply better than melee rogue for a bunch of reasons.

    • Pets tank too well. This introduces problems such as mobs running around as different pets taunt them which makes it hard for the melee DPS, not to mention the main tank sometimes needs to be the one attacked to perform well. In a serious group they can turn off taunt but out and about this just isnt going to happen.

Makes it sound like I hate the game but am actually enjoying it. Most of above just needs balancing over the next year or two. Too bad I'll be playing GW2 or ArcheAge by then.

I wouldnt have tried this game except for the fact that someone bought it for me for doing them a favor (proofreading their grad school application; they got in yay :) )

so far i like  it but dont love it.  I think it has more "soul"  (no pun intended!!)  to it than War did.  something intangible that was lacking in war is present in rift.  I also like the art style of the defiant stuff.

i wish it were a LOT more open ended though.  the world seems small and conveyor belt like BUT what there is, is great and well polished.

the three-class thing seems like it would make for a fun bit of "theorycrafting".

overall as f now, if i had to answer "would you sub past the first month" my answer would be, leaning towards, but not definately.

RIP Ribbitribbitt you are missed, kid.

Go see the movie "The King's Speech" and tell me that all movies are the same.  Same with MMORPG's, there are ways to make them feel different, Rfit really doesn't.

Doesn't mean thats a bad thing per sec, I'm playing Rift myself but depending on what you're looking for it might not be the game you are looking for.

Calling it standard fare is a pretty honest assessment and if that's what you crave, this is your game.

It's when the mob hits you in back, yeah it's annoying, pretty much even worse mechanic than WoW's dazed, but i guess it's supposed to prevent people from just running through bunch of mobs/training them onto others. Needs some work and owuld love to see it re done.

    • Rift contribution rewards spamming useless abilities

Useless? Damage/Heal, Damage burst, stun, heal..who are they useless? AT 40+ levels i found them very helpful.

    • Having to stand still for mounting and non insta-casts

You can however mount while in combat. There neebs to be something to prevent people from just insta running away on mount in PvP. Not like it's different in other mainstream MMOs.

    • Crafting is not very good, mechanically similar to other games but the balance and time sinking is out of whack

Again, issue of almost most of mainstream MMOs. Haven't seen a really good crafting since ages, it allw ill come down to how they crafted epics hold, and well they already added allt hose nfity things like armor patches, whetstones and shield spikes that will always be useful.

    • I cannot speak for end game but the basic mechanics are heading towards faction grinding in a big way

Seemed more like Rift grinding from what i've checked. You need Decorated to be able to get raid lures for raid rifts. Not big problem considering you will want to get plenty of planarite anyway for the Planar Focus items for different roles. Biggest rep grinds so far seem to be Warfront factions.

    • They need some kind of indicators for role because LFG is confusing when you have several builds and just saying 'cleric' doesnt mean you can be main healer. I come from a background where you adapt according to who is in your pug, but I realise most players are used to being fussier who they choose.

Or people could just say what souls they have specced into. All comes down to how community behaves i guess. Personally haven't ran into any problems with that.

Playing a tank myself i always top contribution, but that's because i actually pay attention to what's going on. Seen plenty of 'wannabe' tanks trying to keep those major invasion event bosses and not ever looking at their specific mechanics resulting in many insta deaths. So far tanked those events up to 30 lvl. Not enough people in higher zones to get one going sadly so not sure how it evolves. I agree tho, melee dps is at disadvantage during most those events since bosses have lots of knockbacks and pbaoe abilities you need to run out of, while ranged can keep spamming.

    • Pets tank too well. This introduces problems such as mobs running around as different pets taunt them which makes it hard for the melee DPS, not to mention the main tank sometimes needs to be the one attacked to perform well. In a serious group they can turn off taunt but out and about this just isnt going to happen.

Never had problem. Unless i get unlucky streak of misses/dodges on my high threat abilities i can keep invasion event boss on me 100-0%. Maybe those tanks you speak of should actually do something more than mash mindlessly shiny buttons.

Makes it sound like I hate the game but am actually enjoying it. Most of above just needs balancing over the next year or two. Too bad I'll be playing GW2 or ArcheAge by then.

All in all, i find Rift as solid MMO just at the release. Nice change compared to all other games released over last years that had terrible launches and major core issues. There is plenty of tweaking to be done and fleshing out ccertain parts of the game, but if the developers keep doing their job it shouldn't be anything troublesome. That said it's nothing revolutionary either, so if you are looking for completely next-gen experience you will be disappointed.

For my needs it's perfect for now.

    Rift in a nutshell:

Good game = It will sell well, around a Million

Boring MMORPG = Short term subscription, 300K top after a couple of months

An honest opinion of rift. hmm

Ive been playing since the 6th beta and have been playing through the headstart (as a Defiant) into level 29 on the Deepwood server. One big thing I like is I havent had any issues downloading the game, or installing it, and havent had any issues with disconnects or massive server queues (most being like maybe 4-5 min queues) so its been a superb start.

Graphics: I play on a decent PC and can run the game on max settings with very few framerate issues, about the only time I have frame rate issues is obviously during big invasions or at a rift with tons of people. The game design is very nice and polished and the avatars and mobs look very detailed and lifelike (love the Skeleton Warriors). The texture, lighting and shading are excellent, havent experienced any graphic anomolies or bugs, the graphics and design easily will be one of the stronger elements with Rift that many people will find pleasant and up to par.

Sound: Sound imo isnt quite as good as I would have liked it, the sound effects IE: explosions, spells, melee attacks and overall combat sound effects could have used a little more punch but its not bad enough to ruin the game. The music is ok but not great, the music does compliment the overall feel of the game well enough with a dark, ambient mood through the zones; imho, music is a huge part of the a game for me and can make a subpar game way more enjoyable, heavy use of ambient background music is "ok" but I would have liked more variety and way more vibrant, captivating tracks for combat and for the zones in general. I only got up to level 29 so far so I havent heard all the music, its just an opinion on what Ive heard so far.

Customization: The character customization works to help give you a somewhat varied toon but you wont get anywhere near the differences you can with other games so overall its just "ok". The UI on the otherhand is very good and it does everything you should expect from MMOs made today, the ability to move everything on screen and size it to the way you want it is great and gets no complaints from me.

PvE: The enemy AI is pretty cut and dry and the mob packs in this game seem to have a larger aggro range then Ive seen in other games which can tend to get frustrating in heavy enemy strongholds. I havent seen any issues with AI pathing, havent seen any get stuck in terrain or magically jump from one spot to another due to latency or lag which is a huge plus (Im looking at you warhammer / lotro O.O). The respawn rate right now in game is very fast which is expected for game at this point at release but can become a slight problem for non dps souls until they start getting more abilites.

The Rift system is pretty cool, the huge invasions are just awesome, it may not be revolutionary but its very fun to team up and tackle the bosses and regain lost footholds which have easily been the biggest thing I have spent my time on. Ive seen a lot of people complain about rifts and invasions getting in the way of leveling, but I have yet to really get stopped in my tracks because a rift opened right where the quest item/ mobs are. Many of the rifts are located just outside a leveling area and can be avoided if you absolutely need to.

A small note on mounts, one issue that I have is very minor but can get very annoying is the ability of mobs to dismount you at the drop of a hat. Im not sure who decided that that was how they wanted the system to work, but its easily one feature that could be insanely annoying when it comes to chasing rifts on large open maps.

PvP: Ive played about 50-60 warfronts so far (Black Gardens and The Codex) , they are pretty much standard battlefield maps with relics to hold and points to capture. So far my only complaints are that Im not sure if they have put any kind of check on what classes are qued so that the maps are a little more balanced. Ive been in many games where one side had a huge number of clerics and warriors, while our side consisting mostly of rogues and mages with no healers at all, maybe its meant to be unpredictable but it would be nice if there was some sort of balance on what souls  get picked for the battles. I know rifts' souls can vary massively and it would be hard to balance it but its just wishful thinking on my part :). overall the warfonts are very fun and intense and I can see myself enjoying for a long time to come.

Another thing that Ive seen is there arent many rewards available for favor points (which is the PvP currency) for lower levels which really makes PvP at those levels more just another means to level up rather then stay in the bracket for a period of time to get gear and play for kicks. The few vendors Ive seen (Kelari Refuge for Freemarch, Meridian has PvP Reputation Vendors that sells the PvP souls and maybe one or two items, and a vendor in Granite Falls for Stonefield) that sell gear for favor usually only sell one chest or leg item and even then they sell an item whose stats arent even close to some of the greens you can get from questing or on par with items from dungeons which is kind of a bummer.

Crafting : Crafting is pretty much a cut and paste affair from other games, the items you craft will most likely last you a few levels before you replace it with a quest green so its not really all that useful until endgame it seems. Overall crafting could have been better, a negative for me was that unless you are in your major faction city you will have to run to many different areas to craft  since one hub will have the only workbench in the zone and the only forge is in another hub down the road.

Questing: The questing is more standard far, grab X amount of this, gather X amount of that, bring this item to location X, kill X amount these. There are a few throughout the zones that deviate from that but they are few and far between. In my honest opinion the questing in this game is probably the least enjoyable part of the game for me and will easily bore people that arent into straight themepark style MMOs. The questing is very linear and most quests are chained so in order to do them you have to complete the others. I personally cant really see myself leveling many alts through the game because of the questing and thats a big negative that may hurt this games longevity.

In Conclusion, Im enjoying my time with Rift, I dont have many issues with the game its a very solid, polished MMO experience that I see many people enjoying and having fun with. Like others have said it doesnt revolutionize the genre but rather takes whats been done and makes it its own.

Sure we all would like to see some huge new groundbreaking system in MMOs to take us beyond the themepark questing system but if more companies put out more polished games like Rift the waiting wouldnt be so bad :). I would like to say great job to Trion for an excellent launch and hope their game is a success into the future. Will I continue playing this game in the long run, probably not because of the quest system, once Ive leveled a few toons to max and seen what there is to see other games will be out and I'll eventually have to check those out...end of line.

I pretty much concur with all that (other than the PvP which I haven't tasted), but I would add that even though the quests are very standard, I like to use the Rifts as a diversion. The XP is good, and the rewards are often very nice as well. Then, when I'm sick of Rifts, I can go back to questing and even skip the ones I'd rather not do. I've always like Kill X of Y / Collect Y of Z type quests because I find them relaxing.

I was actually  hoping to be able to get a much better "sound" in the game.  I usually end up turning it off and playing my own music instead.  I know it's really a minor thing, but it adds a lot; if a game has a good "sound" then it will keep my interest that much more.  It's just another sense (hearing) that will help keep me more intune with what is going on in the game.  Overall I am extremly impressed with the game.  I do agree it isn't anything revolutionary but for some reason it is new and improved from anything, in my experince, that is currently out there.

I would also like to say Rift is allwoing me to be excited about an MMO for the first time in six years.  I was excited about UO, WoW, and now this.  I have played all the one in between and around the genre.  I'm happy something like this is out and I believe it will keep my attention for a long time to come.

I am only worried about one thing:  Will the mass majority keep playing.  I don't like playing a game when the mass population tends to die out.  Even if server merges happen I tend to lose my interest in the game.  Pretty sad, yeah, but I do like population...

Rift is very smooth. I love that about it. I like the quest also, the first time running through they're pretty great. They get boring the third of fourth time doing them.

The souls. I like the idea of souls very much. Referencing from wow, you can mix a warlock, a disc priest, and a pyro mage all together. I like the variety you can make through mixing the souls.

I like the quest. I've played Warhammer, and the public quest are similar but the rifts are step up from public quest. Rifts can happen all over and have a greater variety than PQ's.

I like warfronts, as I have liked scenario's and battleground. To me, they're a fun way to PvP since it's generally fair.

I like the world, a lot. It's rather nice.

I believe the community is better than WoW's but that's probably since WoW has such a high amount of subs which means more asshole's and trolls. I seem to recall one or two trolls from Rift.

What I do not like is only having one starting zone per faction. I believe they should change that so when playing new classes you don' thave to run through the same quest four different times.

Overall rift is a good game imo. As stated already, I would be subbed and playing right now if gamestop had ordered my pre-order, like they're suppose to do.

...and this isn't even maxed out. The extremely well designed landscapes, the challenging dungeons and the open class system sold it to me.

Though I haven't played it yet, I've seen videos, read reviews, some other stuff, and to me it seems like a pretty fun game.

    EDIT

Half of what I'm seeing is just this. "It's just another WoW" this is not what I'm asking for. It doesn't seem like another WoW to me, and if it is, it seems like a BETTER WoW with more features. In order for me to test this, I'm going to have to check it out for myself by playing the free trial. And of course there will be fixes to the game and additions to make it better. No game

just starts out good, it takes time and healing to only make it better.

I just want to say that I know there are a lot of WoW clones, but WoW got IT'S ideas off other games as well, WoW is just top of the market right now.

I think it's fair to compare a new MMO with WoW since, as you say, WoW is at the top of the market. There's no doubt in my mind anyone developing a theme-park MMO will look at WoW the closest.

That said, I do think Rift is better than WoW (and LotRO, etc) is some ways, but not in others. I like the fact that Rift has a lot of the little things at launch (equipment compare, etc) and the soul trees have proven to be more interesting than I originally thought (playing Bard/Ranger atm and loving it).

I have no idea how populated RIFT will be in 3/6/9 monrhs. It's VERY polished out of the box, and aside from minor quibbles I have, it's the best launch by far since LotRO. But it is, at it's core, a theme-park MMO which, aside from the Rifts (which, while fun, are really just a pack of spawned mobs and could get tiresome) is really nothing substantially different from any other.

I give it an A- for smooth launch, but not certain of the long-term prognosis. A lot depends on how well the dev team responds and is proactive, and so far, they pass with flying colors.

So let me get this straight, and correct me if I'm wrong... This game is pretty much another WoW, just slight differences and more features added? (Which, honestly, I could live with, cause I'm playing WoW.)

Basically yes, although how many more features are added really depends on the person you ask. Fanboys will give you larger amounts than haters will.

If I sum it up on one word, I would say Rift is an "Average" AAA.  There's good, there's bad, but it doesn't exactly cut it's own path.

Well hopefully a year or so down the road, they will realize that rifts are the same old thing, and will improve them/make them not as much of a nuisance.

For me , I was skeptical from day one to be honest, the only reason I ended up playing it was a friend bought it for me. The following is my thoughts on it (I don't like wow btw)..

    1. Customer Service D+

    2. Rift concept A+

    3. Graphics B+

    4. Animation B-

    5. Interface C

    6. Character Options B

    7. Ease of Gameplay C

    8. Storylines A

    9. Community B+

    10. Innovations B

    1. Customer Service- Look for another post of mine and you will know why I have  D+, I had issues and it took almost a week to figure it all out.

    2. Rift Concepts- Rated awsome even thou the concept of public question was done in War, they do it way better here and they are fun. People getting burnt out are the same people on all the freakn time. I got bored on ANY mmo I have played when I played non-stop. For me I play this game casually, 2-3 hours a day if that and I don't hit rifts or look to PL, I just do quest and if I run into one and feel like it (or it looks fun ) I go in , hell I still haven't figured out what to do with half the stuff I get in game hehe.

    3. Graphics- Really not much to say here, they are not anywhere near WoW cartoons, so alas much better, I think graphics are like dating someone.. the old saying comes to mind "Beauty is in the eye of the beholder".

    4. Animation- This "would" have been an A, sadly the pets all are bad, very stick figure and not much there, only thing in the game world that looses that emmerision factor.

    5.  Interface- This is where the WOW clone shines, it's a rip right off the WoW game no doubt about it, I give it a C because of no inovation or improvments, I could think of plenty to improve whats there but eh.

    6. Character Options- While the design of a character is pretty limited the options for classes, abilities, the way you build souls are pretty dam cool, I can spend hours just figuring out what I want to do. Never get bored here.

    7. Ease of Gameplay- Alas I didn't find it all that easy to get into. The reason for this allot of things are not explained and still haven't been. The intro was good , but as soon as you hit past 7 it's more like "ok you got the game down, now go!" and had a ton of questions like mail, crafting etc.. all of that should have been introduced prior to your 10's,. and there is still stuff I am pretty much clueless what to do or how to do it.

    8. Storyline- I actually like the story, the rifts history, the war because, why we where brought back into the world etc. All stories from getting something or killing something fits in the arch, I enjoy them very much.

    9. Community- If you avoid the forums and depending on your server ( I am on a pve and pvp) both are actually descent in game, and the nice /ignore command makes life very barable indeed. Most people will answer question easy enough and I think rifts bring the community togather more then any game I have been in (in the mmo genre at least).

    10. Innovations- Overall not bad, allot of people compaire this game to WOW only, but it really has parts of every descent MMO I can think of or at least parts in an MMO that where innovative and could be better executed. In this , there are more then WoW simularites in this game, the only WoW factor I see is the interface and pets. (the companions etc, not actual pets for casters or rogues , those are actually bad atm)

Summary: I enjoy it as a casual player solo and group with my friends, in the end I am actually impressed with the game (Again wasn't going to get it in the end) but I found myself going to it each day now and being suprised in game in different areas I find. I am sure the newness will ware off in time, but like when I played DC online or LOTRO (my latest two) in those I got bored actually pretty quickly , this reminds me of my EQ and daoc days, where I go in and still want to play when I log. Been awhile sense I have had that feeling ;)

I say, if you are looking for a good MMO to tied you over for a year or so (waiting on starwars) , this will definitly fit the bill nicly. My servers already have ques :P , had to wait 15 min tonight, not to bad compaired to others,. but they have added more, so plenty of spaces open in the new ones. My 2cents and a very very honest review, again really was iffy on this title, buddy got it for me and I actually enjoy it, 6month sub for me, not sure if further, will have to see.

(note: not type gramical checks on this post, it's late and well I should be in bed atm haha, so umm ya, this is it as is)

Actually it would be more accurate to say that both WoW and Rift started from the same point, a vanilla standpoint. WoW over the years evolved into pushing people into single game type quests and lobby gameplay (auto dungeons, battlegrounds, arenas), while Rift is pushing people towards the open world and objectives. Dungeons and warfronts are there for Rift, but they are additions to the gameplay, not the main and only focus.

So far pretty good as long as I keep playing it casually. Sadly though we have a guy in our guild that is already level 40 within a week. I'm afraid content is pretty scarce in this game at the moment.

I wrote on this abit before... when I stated that RIFT is like an Oreo Cookie without the frosting in the middle...  it just doesnt have longevity as it is... I sunk my teeth on  an MMO and I shall NEVER see the likes again... Asherons Call had lore like we have never seen (except perhaps EQ.. the original) could i get to top level in a few days??  HECK no..  They sink thousands of dollars into this  and I see people getting bored already..   take heed DEV's..   Where is the games of old where we spent time  and got involved in the world??  sorry  ill step down off my soap box.. perhaps I will go back to my  older MMO..   to those that are having fun.. more power to ya..  Im still waiting for innovation and something that grabs the interest of exploration, research, crafting, adventure..  Kwosh

Thinking back to the old days , people always seem to forget the number one complaint, the grind. I remember when you would be in EQ all day just to get past 1 level and when you hit the key grind levels (which later the devs admitted they made harder to level on) it was just worse. After 40's it was 2  days 3 days of full grinding mob after mob to get the next "level". EQ was nothing about quest , nothing about a story, it was a grind fest with friends taking down bosses and dealing with spawn issues.

EQ for it's time was a great game because nothing came close, however the days of 1-3 days of full grinding to get a level are over. People will get bored way to fast, now companies have to innovate and come up with alternatives to entertain people. I don't agree a longer grind makes a better game, hell they could have done that with rift, just tripple the xp it takes per level, but then you and everyone would be complaining how you have to grind grind grind to get anywhere, it's just a time sink...funny thing is thou all MMO's and games in general are timesinks. We play them to get away from reality and have "Fun" not grind mob after mob (well unless that's fun to you but I don't know one person that thinks it is), anyways, point being, those that grind threw games will complain about "any" game released, Personally they should just find alternative means of entertainment so they are not on the computer 24/7, would solve allot of the issues with MMO's and many games for that matter.

We use to have games that latested months and could grind on them as well, but back then it was a ton of content vs little eye candy or effects. Now things have to look like a movie or they don't "cut it" and that cost more money/time then anything in development. It is what it is, there are a ton of indi companies (see steam) that offer games of old or even new that don't have fancy graphics but have content that could last you months, but you and I both know you won't and a majority of people will not play them because they "don't look that good". It is the way of gaming atm, till this changes there will be no MMO or game for that matter that will please the masses.
