You have no idea how bad I'd like a .hack based MMO, hell, I've even penned something myself that blatantly rips the entire setting off. That's how awesome it was, I had to imitate it. Sadly, an imitation is about as close as it's going to get to something like it ever hitting the actual MMO genre. Guess there was an online console game back in 08', but it never made it to the states, and closed down the servers fairly quickly after release.

I don't mind.. hehe as long as i can play and enjoy. i dont want to think of problems while i am in the game. that's the thing i am playing. to enjoy and forget my problems... world has lots of problem and i want to be free on that. and focusing in my favorite game..

When people talk about "The World" in relation to .hack they ar enot talking about the real world. The World is the name of the MMO the characters are playing in the .hack games & animated series.
The new hack anime quantum is set really close to our time I beleive around 2025. If some really mad scientist comes out with those goggles and makes a game based off of the hack series that would be the day.
Ever since playing the original I wanted it to be a real mmo, not just a pso or diablo type but a full fledged mmo even though I guess it would have similar elements like Kuraphimaru said and they are very right about what they said. The only problem is that most likely some stupid company would ruin the things that made the game unique and awesome. I would still play though because I thouroughly enjoyed each game.
A question I'd like to ask is this: What would .hack/MMO have going for it? I mean, lore isn't going to cut it in a long run and if you make it true to the spirit of anime and PS2 titles then what you will have is a semi-instanced FFA themepark MMO with a really interesting and unusual traveling design and an odd skill system based on what gear you wear ... thats it. Other than that, its just load a zone, kill/grind mobs, enter dungeon, go through its levels, *OPTIONAL* fight a boss, open chest, leave dungeon. Thats is it.
What you say is true Kuraphimaru, but if you look at the past mmo's that companies have created they always find a way to mix in an Event, or Quests, all im saying is they don't have to follow the anime "Exactly" they can make their own plot, in their own way, but im sure the players wouldnt mind as long as they were able to use the same basic features shown in the anime. as in weapons and skills, and as you said traveling, the company can go out of their way and make "The World" vast and have many locations and cities, knowing how popular it would get, Or they could keep it simple its all up to them so in reality you can never tell. and who knows maybe the bosses will be great and the dungeons too. We all just have to sit back and wait. *sigh* I Really Do Hope They Hurry Tho! cant wait to play
I also suggest Nexon making the game, because i find it'd be similar to the make up of their game Mabinogi, since Mabinogi is 3D and is rumored to have a uniqe fighting system i think Nexon would have the least trouble creating a .hack TheWorld mmo.

#1.) Console games make PC games stupid.
#2.) Anime type game won't go ANYWHERE in the U.S. (thank god). Just because a select few think it could happen, trust me, it won't..

Wait, you mean a game like "The World" in the dot/hack anime? I'd play it, if I won't go into coma.
Anyway, "Real-life: The MMORPG" is actually a pretty good F2P. It's a sandbox, but mostly PvE. You can PK though, except you don't respawn.

Never saw .hack but I seen hacksigns... It is based in the same world (I thought it was the original and .hack was the sequel but I might be wrong).
