COO Paul Sams confirms that the World of Warcraft-maker's next big project, code-named Titan, has reached an advanced stage of development.
Last year, Blizzard Entertainment co-founder Frank Pearce confirmed the his company's new massively multiplayer game was code-named "Titan" as had been indicated by a purportedly leaked Blizzard release schedule. That schedule had the game arriving in the fourth quarter of 2013--over two years away.
However, just because the game may be so far off doesn't mean that it still isn't coming together. Speaking with industry site Gamasutra, Blizzard COO Paul Sams said that the MMOG--which he did not reference by its code-name--is already playable.
"We're playing it already. It is a total ball to play," he said. "We think that the reach of that product is greater than anything that we've done before. We're very excited about that. I believe that it's the type of game that will have a very long life, much like World of Warcraft has."
Sams went on to say that Blizzard hopes the new MMOG--rumored to have a first-person perspective--will eventually outgrow World of Warcraft, which he still believes has many more years in it. "The thing that we hope will happen is that it will not stop World of Warcraft but we believe will eclipse it," he said, before adding, "So, hopefully in 10, 15 and 20 years, that [new MMOG] will still be growing strong and will have set a new mark in the industry for that type of product."
The past several years have seen a steady drip of information about Blizzard's next MMOG. In 2007, the company confirmed that a non-World of Warcraft MMOG was in development. In 2009, the company admitted the game was an all-new property with, according to Activision Blizzard CEO Bobby Kotick, "a little more broad appeal."

Blizzard makes great game, but I think they're making a mistake abandoning World of Warcraft when it's already been a success.
For all we know Titan could completely bomb. Well with Blizzard's hardcore fanbase probably not, but it may not be as good as WoW.
I think it would surprise me more if it weren't playable since we heard about it ~4 years ago.
Also, that would really rock face if it was an MMOFPS, since there aren't really any around. I think it would be the first time Blizzard did an FPS though.
So does anyone know if this new mmo will be in the past, present, or future era?
All speculations on the forums.......the game wont be announced for the next year prolly.
And when announced it will take 2 more years befour it goes live......i'll check this game in about 2 years from now!
lolz
Key thing to note from this and all previously mentioned comments Blizzard, or anyone else for that matter, has said is that Titan is NOT an MMORPG. Blizzard has decided to call it what it really is, to be accurate, an MMOG. Make sure everyone knows this runnin in. It is NOT a roleplaying game, not intended to be one, ever. This is where Blizzard wants ot take this genre, away from the RPG even further than it already does.
(DISCLAIMER - The use of the word YOU in the above post is not directed at any one person in particular, but towards those who fall into the category itself - there is no personal attack here, neither intentional nor implied.)
so the developers expects 12 million players to actively subscribe to WoW and this new mmo?
I guess they are probably the only company able to back up such things.
And will this mmo be based off Starcraft? seems like Blizzard haven't got any new stories outside their 3 main narrative worlds
How much WoW could a WoWhater hate, if a WoWhater could hate WoW?
As much WoW as a WoWhater would, if a WoWhater could hate WoW.
Obviously it'll probably be either SC or diablo franchise. Since it's already have strong fanbase.
apparently not, it will be a brand new IP of their own...lol yeah sure. Blizzard arent braindead , they should know they only gained mainstream success when they plaguiarized GW from A to Z.
so i kinda expect Titan to be some kind of WAR40K barely disguised as something else.if not, that would be too much for my poor heart...omg Blizzard not stealing GW's IP, judgement day is upon us!
I'm guessing it could be some sort of cyberpunk (or steampunk whatever you want to call it). Or maybe some kind of historical game, like ......er East India Company online :P (sound gripping to ya?).
If they are saying it'll be more co-op than pvp oriented sounds cool whatever they come up with.
bet it'll be a Farmville mmo
It may not kill WoW because as they say they will be two totally different things. If this is FPS and not Fantasy related it leaves many opting to stay with WoW (regardless of the shiny new play thing).
I hate shooters and I love fantasy games. There might not be 12 million like me but I'm sure there is enough to keep WoW from sinking over night.
EDIT: Forgot the "from" in "from sinking"
I am not sure, last year at Blizzcon they only reserved a section of the Anaheim Convention Center... this year they got the whole place reserved. Link is here: http://www.anaheimconventioncenter.com/eventsOpen.cfm?id=2374 So they might have something big planned. Possibly the first demo for their new MMO and they needed a larger area for it... don't know.
I do hope they will air Blizzcon on Direct TV, it was fun watching it last year.

Troll attempt me thinks...Considering wow was released before GW. Beta's for both started not even close to each other as WoW was in Beta long before GW was. Besides, if Blizzard "plaguiarized" GM from A to Z, don't you think there would have been a court case of somesort? And please dont play the "But they wouldnt bother cuz blizzard has bazillions of dollars!" card..
As for Titan being some sort of WH40K rip off, oh you mean like WAR looking like a barely disguised WoW clone?
I can remember them saying that they were already playing it in-house, so it must be playable. Not ready for release, but playable.
It's a joint project with Zynga called "World of Farmcraft". It will appeal to both MMO and Facebook social gamers alike. I can't wait.
If you would take the time to read, GW does NOT MEAN GUILD WARS but GAMES WORKSHOP (The Ip owner of Warhammer and Warhammer 40k).
Or how about Call of Duty Online? =p
splat
GW = Games Workshop not Guild Wars. It's generally considered that the original Warcraft Orcs and Humans copied many of the ideas from GW's Warhammer tabletop games.
Steam: Neph
Playable =/= near launch.
Sent me an email if you want me to mail you some pizza rolls.
Wow way to go dude..... not
MMOG is simply a vague term of discribing a MMO without revealing the subgenre.
it may be a MMOFPS/RPG
doesnt mean it has to be called a MMOFPSRPG
Even Darkfall and Planetside isnt called that.
RPG is a video gaming term, and shouldnt be confused with the TT term of the same name.
Philosophy of MMO Game Design
wow talk about total bull shit. As if Warhammer doesnt rip of Lord of the RIngs. WoW<--- as in post WC3 is more of a LoTR clone if anything lore wise.
