I am playing Atlantica as I speak. The game gives a server pop-up when someone gets a mount. Some guy just got well over two dozen of them.
At $10 a chance to get one, and with about a 5% of doing so, the guy must have spent close to a thousand dollars.
Damn.
And yet not only do free players have to compete with guys like him, it's people who spend just a little money. There's no way to catch up.

hehe...
And here I thought you were going to bad mouth LoTRO.
My mistake. Carry on...
i think part of the problem is that if you want to play any of these so called F2P games seriously.. you end up spending more than if you had subbed to a P2P game, considerably more.. those that don't spend any money tend to have very limited game experiences, which makes me wonder why even bother.. which is probably why i don't

The way to approach FTP games is to promise yourself before even installing the game that you will spend absolutely zero, and challenge yourself that way. If the game is unplayable unless you spend actual money, then uninstall it and move on
That is how I aproach them, and it is great, free, fun
I kinda feel bad for those players who aren't able to sub for mmorpgs. There's a lot of shit they have to put up with.
The whole IDEA of competing in multiplayer game to me is that people get to compete using their intelligence, talents and perseverance in game and get to have the upper edge by putting in more effort than the next guy. RL wallets being a factor is both immersion breaking and competition fraud to me.
Every serious game where player competition is an important aspect should give everyone equal chances and opportunity.
Put in a few hours to find that rare spawn with that awesome drop? You've earned it!
Number crunch for nights to come up with the best build + tactics to dispose of a particular class in pvp? You've earned it!
Invest time in your guild to make it a great coherent bunch, roflstomping hard dungeons and reaping the rewards? You've earned it!
Put in hours and hours to be able to craft that great set of armor? You've earned it.
Etc.

Exactly how I play F2P's, much more enjoyable rather than fretting over what other players have.
THIS ^^
I really don't understand the worry people have about what others have in game and how much they spend. How many of you have completed the highest endgame raids in WoW or EQ2? and do you get envious about someone walking by in full T10000 gear in a p2p game? there is a simple thing to remember about playing MMO's in p2p games the ones with the most spare TIME have the top gear and stuff and in f2p games people with the most spare MONEY have the top end gear and stuff. So my advice is play what you want and stop worrying about who has what and enjoy the game until you don't.

*reads again*
Let's get this straight ... in this game you actually have to pay $10 to buy only a slim chance on getting a mount? That's isn't just an item shop, ... that's like wasting cash on a lottery or a fairground. I never knew FTP could be that bad.
My brand new bloggity blog.
You're basically saying "you should enjoy the game like I do, and not the way you usually enjoy games, because my way is better".
That's very poor advice.
It's like telling someone they should like your favorite flavor of ice cream, and not theirs. It's never going to happen.
People are obviously ALREADY playing what they want, and many don't want to play games that have cash shops.
If you like them, that works for you, not anyone else because you think they are playing the game wrong.
...and your point is...hes going to ride all 24 mounts at once in PvP against you????????

No what I'm implying in my advice is that don't worry about things you cannot control which is good advice for real life as well. If you enjoy a game just play it until you don't, worrying about who's got what and how much time or money they have spent to get ingame items is out of your control and is wasted energy and as the OP is playing a f2p game in Atlantica I really don't understand your point about many deciding not to play f2p games as the opposite is true as well. To me you're just twisting it to seem like I am promoting the f2p world as you do not like that aspect of MMO's as you have said many times in many threads.

The terrible thing about F2P games... is that you have a choice to play them??

I cant see how quitting games after several weeks and start anew in another game only to have to do that again in a short while is great, free fun......
Hmm, tbh, all i meant was that more often than not, in order to get the same level of game play out of a F2P game, that you do from a regular P2P game, you usually have to pay more than the subbed game. Though how much you'd end up paying if you were totally hardcore.. .. i really wouldnt like to speculate..
Some F2P games are terrible like you mention but a select few are ok. I am playing Leaugue of Legends, not an MMORPG but still, and you dont have to spend a single dime to be competetive. You cant get every hero in the game just by playing and it is only if vanity stuff that you need to pony up some money. That and faster leveling but levels dont mean all that in that game.
Even so I have spent $25 just to support them for the great game they made.
I wish F2P MMORPGs were more like that...
My gaming blog
MMOs are like restaurants.
Personally I like being able to pay 15 bucks and get free buffet. F2P games are like restaurants that give you bread and onions for free and you have to remain standing, you cannot grab a seat. but if you want to have a "normal" menu in a table it will cost you a lot more than 15 bucks, and if you want a great menu the price will skyrocket.
now, some people likes bread and onions and not sitting, but I cannot picture myself eatin only that, uncomfortable for weeks. I rather pay that 15 bucks and have the meal I want.
Good analogy. Most F2P games are really like that. They give you crap for free and if you want to get something decent you have to pony up alot more money than a regular subscription would cost you.
My gaming blog
Thanks for posting that analogy. Thats how F2P nowadays... They are "hoping" for people who are weaken-mind person or rich people that will pay to winto be like those other players. Not my type of game. Atlantica Online is very CASINO game. I expect fairness at all the times... Subscription game is way to go for me. Limit yourself spending per month and everyone has the same opportunity. Now.. as for Free to play should be like Pay to Win. You can spend unlimit money and still doesnt guarantee you get the reward that you wanted. Thats called Casino. Guarantee> Risky and Cheap> Expensive.
In the end... You will quit one day no matter what.
Thats all about "Pay to Win" games.

Thats a terrible analogy like most analogies in these forums. Most f2p games let you play how you want and spend what you want (definition of a A La Carte menu?) only if you want to compete at the upper echelons of the endgame then it can get increasingly expensive refining/geming/carving etc.. your equipment but the same goes for p2p games (which I've outlined in a earlier post) the only difference is the currency is TIME in p2p games how many of you think you can get to kill Deathwing without putting in the hours to get the right tier gear to even enter the dungeon in the first place? putting p2p games on a "they are fairer because everybody has access to the all the content" pedestal is bunkum because they do not, TIME commitments needed to gain access to endgame content or any of the artificial grinds to obtain certain things in game restrict access to that content.
Its simple to me but seems rather complicated to others, TIME or MONEY you choose which you have more of and play an MMO accordingly but funnily enough many f2p MMO's still offer a game if you have TIME (for free) but p2p games don't offer anything if you have the MONEY (pay to win) so which one is the fairer system?

So who's the weak minded here...... pay £40/$60/50euros for a game to find out the games full of bugs and unplayable (Vanguard, WAR, AOC, POTBS etc...) or lacks any real content (CO, STO, Darkfall, MO, DCUO etc..) or someone who downloads a game for FREE plays game and decides whether the games worth spending some money on it?
I covered fairness in my previous post.

Great analogy.
It's incredible how many people out there are perfectly content with having less for more.
"Mr. Rothstein, your people never will understand... the way it works out here. You're all just our guests. But you act like you're at home. Let me tell you something, partner. You ain't home. But that's where we're gonna send you if it harelips the governor." - Pat Webb
How is it a great analogy? f2p games give you everthing you need to play the game and don't charge an entry fee whereas most p2p games in this modern MMO world (exceptions are WoW, LotRO, Rift & Aion) give you a broken half arsed excuse for a game and charge you for the pleasure. There is such bliss in ignorance.

Are you guys ignoring the fact that a lot of F2P games also have a $15/month or $10/month subscription which basically gives you everything you'd normally have in a P2P game?
If I'm not mistaken, you can still P2P a lot of F2P games. Why object to the ability to CHOOSE whether you want to pay $15/month to rent it all, or any amount you want for PERMANENT ownership?
The analogy is not accurate at all.
P2P would be like paying 15 bucks to rent any care you want, which you can drive for a month.
F2P would be like giving you a 1990's car for free, and charging you $1 per year you upgrade, so if you want to drive a 2011 car it'll cost you $21, which is more than 15-- except that you now OWN the car, and if you want NITRO to go faster (XP potions) it'll cost you $10/month because NITRO burns away with use, but that's only IF you want it.
Most people are satisfied with owning a 2011 car without NITROs, and if you own that car (or play that MMO) for years, F2P is DEFINITELY a better deal.
The longer you play a F2P game, the cheaper it becomes. Buy the warforge race for $5. Hate the dark elves? Good, that saves you $5 on something you dont want. Play for 5 years, and that warforge race costs you $1 a year. Buy two dungeon packs for $20 total, and now what have you spent?
Over 5 years, you spent $25.
A P2P game over 5 years costs you $900.
$900 > $25??
Come back later, and you still own that $25. P2P, you have to pay more because you only ever rented it.

I don't think anyone here actually thinks about it.
They just hear "F2P is bad!" and follow it like the Germans in WW2.
I can't think of a single thing better than F2P system with limits on "play to win".
