Servers should be back online tomorrow (Friday 22nd) and subscription fees are still waived. What made you leave? Knowing that I could better answer your question and let you know if your problem has been addressed yet.

Game was just damn dull. Much new content put in yet?
There's plenty to do if you enjoy crafting/gathering and working up multiple combat classes, but still awaiting the release of dungeons and other unique content.
Specifically regarding my comment about dungeons you should refer to the discussion under "question 10". The other discussions about each question can give you an idea of some of their priorities as well.

Holy shit, why are so many people in favour of instancing? I don't think FFXIV will be able to stand that. It doesn't really mesh well with the game world itself.

It's probably because the population is more interested in the lore, crafting, questing and less about competition. Instances eliminate competition.
So they are logging in to have a good time but they don't consider competition to be part of that good time.
Like Skyrim? Need more content? Try my Skyrim mod "Godfred's Tomb."
Open world is not going anywhere though, and at least so far open world content is prioritized over instances. I don't want this guy to become a one-trick pony like some other games, that's for sure. There are million ways to handle instances.
Using LOL is like saying "my argument sucks but I still want to disagree".
I'm going back, but i'm still gonna keep playing my rts games to pass time just in case they have further outages. also i got a friend who got me into aion so i'm trying that out, it's not bad, just wish you could fly alot more, but i'm still at like level 35 so i suppose it gets better. but i was making good headway on FFXIV so i'm looking forward to going back.
I can't believe it's six months. Really can't believe they still aren't charging. Really, really can't believe they seem to have accomplished so little in those six months. Confirms my opinion that the game released at least 18 months too early. Still confused over that one.
All said, I'm patching up and will poke around this week, to see if it has improved enough to warrant some time, since it's still free and all and it's a shame for the price of the CE to go totally to waste.
I'm just worried that SE may not be investing enough to really fix the game. Nice to keep the servers up at no charge, but if they don't still have pre-launch staff levels, working hard on making it a viable game, then it doesn't seem worth any major time investment for most owners of the game.
They lanched in what might have been an impressive alpha state, with launch projected pretty far forward. There is still some wierd sort of potential here, but it will need a lot of work and a solid investment. (I just can't shake the feeling that maybe the lead dev overpromised on an expected launch window and was just too ashamed to say "I was wrong, we need two more years").
Personally, i will not buy another MMO at launch. I'll give it a good 3 months, wait for reviews, fixes, prices to drop. On FFXIV, i really think things will change in good, it's only a matter of "when". Good thing it's free till "then", and it gives my "gaming fix" playing 2-3 hours per day, doing some leves etc

Could you point me to any design documents they've put or something, please?

Instancing allows them to create better content.
