No leveling up?

gargantroogargantroo Member Posts: 1,477

From what I am hearing, there is no leveling up in this game? I am really confused on this game, but I have been looking forward to buying it for a few months. So is it more like a Zelda type game, you just get a sword and slash stuff and cast spells?
Also: are there mounts?
and... What do people mean when they say it isnt an MMORPG?

Well it depends on what kind of character you make. If you make a pvp character you will start at the maximum level and are limited to only the pvp zones. If you make a Roleplaying character you start at lvl 1 and work you way up to level 20. And no, there are no mounts in the game because they are not needed. Instead, if you've been to the place you need to go you open up the map and click the waypoint there, transporting you there instantly. And it really isn't like a traditional MMORPG in pretty much every aspect of the game. Everything is instanced, combat is more based on skill then spending 100s of hours getting uber loot... The list goes on.

yea thereis leveling up, but this game is based mostly on spells. when you lvl up, you get points to add to a certain type of skill category that you have to make it stronger. you start out first picking your character main job class nad by doing little quests here and there and discovering the different types of classes you can choose as your secondary class.. then you start the story and start getting into doing a lil pvp here and there...the highest lvl you can be is lvl 20. once you hit lvl 20, thats when you start getting in the pvp thing more heavily. well this is basically just some grim facts about the game, youll have to buy it to see all the rest. but with no monthly fees and awesome graphics, its definatly a great buy.

What "No leveling" means in Guild Wars is that you don't have to go hunting monsters just for XP. Sure you level up, but you don't have to grind for XP just so you can make it in the next mission, area etc.. Your character build and your skill as a player matter more. It really has confused a lot of traditional MMORPG players because they see that the monsters are often almost 5 or more levels higher than their characters. Then they go and grind some XP and think they will do better.

So when you are going through the PvE campaign, the lower level characters you see farther in the campaign, the better players those guys are. ::::39::

PvP is played mostly with lvl20 characters because there higher level means much more.

leveling up will make you stronger but in this game its startegy and team work that will lead you to victory. And even when you reach lvl20 there are still all the quests to do....skills to unlock....and battles to win, which means it will be ages before you complete the game (truely) but most importantly have fun and make friends along the wayimage

Remember....life is a game play it through well

If you make a PVP only character that character is automatically max level, but cannot enter PvE areas.. there is leveling, but it does not take very long, and after that point it's all about accumulating skills, which is fully optional.. once you unlock a skill on a PvE character it is unlocked on any PvP characters you decide to make.. sort of like a way of alternate leveling.. doesn't make you any more powerful, but gives you more skillz for PvP, and with quests you can do this through every profession in the game using one PvE char.

quit WoW a while back after getting sick of doing the same old instance runs farming for armor sets.. I've been playing Guild Wars and it's better than I thought it'd be.

However, it really doesn't have anything in common with WoW, so I wouldn't even try comparing them.

Guild Wars has a great PvE side to it that has a full storyline with voice acted cut-scenes and everything.

The PvP side of it is more like Unreal Tournament but with roleplay style fighting.

If you love MMO type games for the persistant world and social aspect, GW won't do it for you. (The community in GW sucks anyway

If you just play the missions you will reach lvl 20 automatically at "ascention" you could be lvl 14 and instanly hit 20, so dont worry about leveling up and just play the missions and you'll be fine

*coughs and points at the topic*

Where TF did you come up with that?  Not only did you post on the wrong topic but (appearantly since your bashing GW) you posted on the wrong section as well.  You've officially made yourself look dumb, good job. image

Anywho to the OP yes and no to your answer as pretty much most everybody else has said.  No if you make a straight out PVP toon, your automaticly maxed but as someone else said you have to unlock a lot of spells/skills with your PVE toon that will require some leveling as well or at least someone to PL you, but good luck on the second of the two.
