I love how most everyone is running around with a basket on their back because it cannot be looted if set to private. This is clearly an exploit but people just don't care. I fear that there is probably no place for a game like this, which still needs to be nurtured to some extent, in our current gaming community.
I suspect it's almost impossible to create a virtual world like SWG was in it's day, because so many players just want to break it down as quickly as possible for no reason. Roleplay is dead and cheating is the expected playstyle.
It's an exploit that the developers have not acknowledged from what I can tell. Why should I run around with lootable items when you aren't doing the same? It's an exploit yes, but if it's not going to be fixed tehn what do you suggest? Because the people who are trying to kill you have already macro'd their skills well beyond yours.

My suggestion is that any decent tribes should expel their cheats.
My suggestion would be that the game suspends the accounts that are using a known exploit.
I never wear a basket on my back because you can never really fill it anyway. I was also under the impression that any equipped storage item..like a basket , pack or pouch was loot-able. Now I know better.
I am in the habit of carrying a grass pack and one pouch/fanny-pack( lol). if I see any "strangers' ...I put my coveted scavenged/foraged items/resources or any tools I may be carrying (usually just a fishing pole..hey ..it could be a Ron Popiel pocket fisherman)) in the single pouch and hide it behind a tree or recognizable landmark until the "coast is clear" or I come back from the dead.lol. If the majority of you playing think that what I do is an exploit...let me know.

Er, if the developers have not acknowedged it as an exploit, then its not, its a game mechanic and you are only hurting yourself by not engaging in the practice.
You are playing in a sandbox. It is not about fair, as long as you are playing within the confines of the rules (as documented by the development team, not how you perceive them to be) then there is no harm, no foul.
It's all about win or go home and unless the Developers put in some controls to the contrary, the victors in this world will be the strong.

I still role-play when I play MMOs. I consider it an exploit so I'm not doing it.
It's not about win or go home. I've been playing MMOs for many years and I've never won anything and yet I still have fun. It's a sand box game and I'm playing it my way.
Also I'm not hurting myself, because all the basket carriers are far too slow to catch me anyway.

Don't interject your own personal morals to other people. If it's an "exploit" then the devs should fix it. Until then, it's allowed by the game mechanics and should be treated as such.

Also If you look at this thread you will see I am not the only one to call it an exploit. People have called it an exploit in game and the Xsyon forums too.
TBH I realised ages ago that a large number of MMO players will do whatever they can to be top dog. I don't play that way.
I'm pretty sure the devs are far more busy with other things. They'll fix it later.
Let's not forget this is supposed to be a full loot PvP game. Having un-lootable baskets would, I feel, be a curious design feature.

Its not an exploit, it is something that was intentionally implemented by the devs as a placeholder till they fix the alignment system. Right now there is nothing to stop gankers/griefers, so they had to minimize the effect these people have on others. If you belong to a tribe you can't even avoid your baskets being set to 'Tribe' and being unlootable that way.

Steering back on topic. I feel it's pretty tragic if the devs would introduce this solution - this really would worry me. Why use a basket that some players do not own as a 'placeholder'? It would surely make more sense to use the standard backpack if you wanted something unlootable (it's also smaller).
A few weeks back I was looking forward to a possible server with no safe zones. Now we have these dumb un-lootable baskets and it seems (here at least) that I'm in the minority thinking that daft. Well, it sure is lame in my opinion. The game is still rather limited in options, and by effectively suspending any meaningful PvP anywhere I really cannot see what the devs are trying to achieve.
I'm not sure how they can avoid having un-lootable baskets. We are talking strictly about baskets that are un-lootable while on a person or outside tribal areas right? Because that should not be allowed. Otherwise....they would need to always have un-lootable baskets ON tribal grounds because ...at some point...there will be a time when no tribal members are logged on ...and other tribes should not be able to walk up and loot baskets at will . I know this is probably not what is being discussed..but just in case I missed something...that's my 2 cents

The game has never had any meaningful PvP. It's never been implemented. You'll have to wait for it. At the very least until prelude is done.
This. Xsyon is a crafting/building game, it has always been advertised like that, and PvP is only an afterthought, only 1 more thing to do amongst the many.

Just to point out this has nothing to do with baskets. Permissions on your starting backpack work the same way as does pouches. This is how permissions currently work.
If it's dropped on tribal land only tribal members can access it - if permissions are set to private then only you can access when you are a member of the tribe. If permissions are set to friend - only friends who are also tribe members can access it. If permissions are set to tribe then tribe can access. If permissions are set to public only tribe members can access it. This is all qualified with where you happen to place it - if it's on the very edge of tribal land people can reach in and access it without being a member of the tribe (as long as they meet the criteria). It appears to be based on where your feet are.
You can't set permissions on anything that you don't own. To own it you either started with it, made it yourself, or it was traded to you - doesn't give you permission setting rights if you just pick it up of the ground or out of another container. This is true even if you equip it. So if someone in your tribe made a bunch of baskets and pouches and placed them in a basket for tribe mates to come grab (without changing the default permissions) guess what the permission level is? Private and the wearer can't change it because the item was picked up and not traded.
Now are some people purposely making sure there stuff is set to private - sure. But there are a ton of people out there who don't even realize that permissions can be set because you don't even see the option if you are unable to do it.
Er, if the developers have not acknowedged it as an exploit, then its not, its a game mechanic and you are only hurting yourself by not engaging in the practice.

I agree in principle, but whether something is an exploit is a judgement call and the devs may change their mind if the consequences are bigger than they expected. When/if they change their mind it can have a major impact on the game.
It's an exploit and they need to fix it...not that i ever worry about being looted because I just jump in the water when I'm about to lose... which makes me completely unlootable... Oh another gamebreaking exploit...

Full loot PVP don't work well. There for almost all game Dev's find some artificial game mechanic to limit player losses, ranging from insurance plans to making the player unlootable for one reason or another.
There are some games that don't try and they for the most part are unappealing to the greater base of players.
Expect Xyson to employ many mechanics (encumberance, non-looting conditions etc) in order to maintain some semblence of order.
And no, the players can't/won't do it. Stop dreaming that dream, has never happened, will never happen.

Now are some people purposely making sure there stuff is set to private - sure. But there are a ton of people out there who don't even realize that permissions can be set because you don't even see the option if you are unable to do it.
I agree in principle, but whether something is an exploit is a judgement call and the devs may change their mind if the consequences are bigger than they expected. When/if they change their mind it can have a major impact on the game.

That was initially explained to NOT be an exploit
It's an exploit and they need to fix it...not that i ever worry about being looted because I just jump in the water when I'm about to lose... which makes me completely unlootable... Oh another gamebreaking exploit...
"I am not in a server with Gankers...THEY ARE IN A SERVER WITH ME!!!"

A modified Eve-like system would work pretty well for this game.
