Role-playing is about pretending that the game is real, correct?
If you are good at that than you can just pretend that the people are actually NPCs.
What if you found out in the newest game that you were playing that there was no way to find out if it was a bot or a person and than found out that it had been mostly bots all along?
Does that change anything?
What if NPC were so hard that it was just like playing a PVP game where you can get ganked anywhere?
People make it funner is because they have better AI than the mobs and provide a bigger challenge and it is funner to win.
Would it be any different if mob AI was suddenly so sofisticated that it was the same as any PVP game?
I recommend that you start pretending that other people are NPCs if it really bothers you that much.
You can get in vent with your friends and block out the rest of the world and just close the chat window and pretend you are going against NPCs with superior AI if you wanted to.

What I found when trying to RP in MMOs that have pvp elements is that the main majority of pvp'ers have no respect for the people who want to rp and will go out of their way to mess up events.
I have played DAOC, AOC, EQ 1 and 2 UO, SWG (pre NGE), and curently Eve Online. And in each of them when ever a RP event has been held you will get some pvp'er who thinks its cool to go and kill everyone there and mess up the event.
There was even a good article about this from WoW where a guild gathered in a place to honour a guild member who had died in RL. The pvp'ers went in and killed them all.
Yeah i cant help but laugh every single time someone would say "role playing is for < insert insult > " while playing on an RP server. I laugh every single time.
Im not an rp'er because i fail at it but i loooooooooove being in a community of them, they make the world way more alive. RP'ers are worse off than video gamers tho. haha We're in the video world of almost instant satisfaction! I think the most common RP these days is cyber sex, or text sex i guess it would be now. Im so old! You kids and your sex texts these days.
