I have an account I started in Sept 05, played to Jan 06 in which time they did a major update and changed the ingame font. After that I could not tell a 0 from O from 8 and a 5 from S, etc. Made it very hard to relay what system you were in, and many other things, like the market. There was a big uprising in the forums, which they removed messages that brought up the subject. Nice way to treat customers. So I just canceled my account. There are still many players complaining about it as I see on there forums.
I started up a test account about a year and a half ago to check it out, and it was still the same.
So question is, did they ever do anything about that? I know I'm not the only one that closed there account over that. I'm not into smashing my face into the monitor to read text on a game. Seems like it would be an easy fix, so I don't understand why they would ignore potential customers for such a simple thing. But it is there game, so it's up to them.
Guess Blizzard is happy to get 5 years of subscription fees.

I couldn't stop myself...
Anyway, None of those post about eve-font was deleted. The fact is, there was so few people complaining, these posts just flown down the forum, due to lack of popularity, among other points.
If you take time to search the forums, you should be able to find back the immense majority of them.
By the way, the only indistinguishable were 0 and O... i don't remember if it has been fixed, though...
I'm french, that's why I sometimes mis-use or mis-spell some words... Please don't blame me.

Well some people have to STOP thinkng and judging things from their own perspective only, I guess Lysarion that you must be around 21 years old(according to your profile). Once you reach the age of 40+ then you should joke about the Font problem in EVE. I am 38 and i don't have any eye sight problem yet but the FONT issue is number 1 reason why i won't subscribe to EVE. i would love to play this game for a long term but i always get headaches and neck problems each time i do the 14 or 21 day trial.....It might seem a joke to you...but to some of us that don't have an excellent eye sight and who usually play our mmo after a hard days work( something you perhaps haven't done yet...) struggling to read text during our game-fun time is unacceptable.
*2 days ago i started this matter on the Rookie channel and oh boy...Almost 20+ people started raging about it as well...
The extented font width doesn't help either? The default isn't good at all for me although it's been better since I got glasses.

I'd say that No 13 is not enough...I guess we could use 16 at least!
Oh back in '05 when it first came live, they were deleted, and some were locked. There were quite a few people complaining about it.
I posted messages about the problem before they even took the patch live.
It's a pretty good game, but I won't play a game that can't get some attention for something so simple. It's pathetic that after 5 years they haven't done anything about it. So 5 years of subscriiption x2 accounts + the many other subscribers that have canceled or won't play really adds up. All for a simple thing like a font change.
Can't tell the difference between 0, O, 8, 9, 5, S.
They were using a terminal or system font b4 and it was very readable.
It really makes you wonder sometime.....You have a game that is clearly a "thinking" game, aka aimed at older ages(meaning no underaged teenie game). At least compared to your average mmorpg, EVE is easily the game for mature people. I can perfectly see myself in 12 years(when i am 50) playing a game similar to EVE instead a wow/rift type of mmo. I can only imagine that thousands of already paying customers are people of 40+ of age. And you have a software that is amazing and versatille like no other. And all these years they always plan ahead for projects that BLOW your mind....
AND THEY STILL CAN'T FUCKING MAKE AN OPTION TO MAKE FONTS BIGGER!
(and i mean bigger than 13)
How about making a "A Future Vision" video with some bigger fonts before implementing alien technology in your game CCP?
Because it is not as fucking easy as you think it is...
EVE uses standard 10pt font. These very forums, iirc, are 12pt. The problem imo is the font itself which is indeed crap. I think it was improved so you do not mistake the letters, not perfect but they did something about it. There was even a word about font change upcoming but who knows when that will be...
Quickest way to relay the system you're in is drag the system name from the upper left corner to your chat window. Its faster than typing and its entered as a clicable link making it much faster and easier for others to set desti.
er, dont know if you missed it but they did announce that a new font is on its way o/
And I agree with all the critisism over the font it needs to scale up as bigger screens and higher resoloutions come out. hopefully the new font will do just that.
Well, i after our guild played some months and each of us not young anymore we stopped playing for some reasons and one big reason was that the font IS TO SMALL and there is no fix to it.
Did 2 times a free test since then and its still the same and NO! i will not change my resolution of my 24" Screen to a freaking low resolution to get big letters in exchange for a bad quality.
There be some other issues but the UI-Font-Size needs really really really work!
Not less than a size of 20 i demand...

Screen resolution has no bearing on font size. Getting a bigger screen or glasses might help though.
I agree with OP. I dont play eve but font size being really small does matter and i dont think u should have to have a 32 inch monitor to be able to play games... and 24 inches is a good size for a monitor as is
I agree, I raised the issue a few times as well, the size of the font is appaling. It isn't good for your eyes to read such small font, no matter how old you are.
REALITY CHECK
Other option I forgot to mention is to place yourself about 60 cm from the screen as standard distance for office work.
You do not need 32 inch monitor to play EVE but some people might need glasses. 10pt font isn't as small and not that unusual in office work - ie, standard font size in Windows Notepad.
This is a similar font to what EVE use (size 10). Easy to read eh? Try to read this (irrelevant text - just to see the font in full paragraph):
February was an eventful month in the outer regions. The first two weeks saw what can only be described as a total collapse of the IT Alliance bloc. The alliance was seen to reduce and then altogether cease its attempts to fight back against the invading Deklein Coalition, resulting in the bulk of the Fountain region falling before the end of the 10, with the last station succumbing to attacking forces on the 15.The PLEX for Good: Japan drive has come to an end. During this drive players have donated a total of 2497 PLEX through 665 contracts and 19.6 billion ISK. IS THIS GOOD TO READ?
REALITY CHECK
If you are complaining about font size, do not argument with font type - two different things...
Also, you are barking at wrong tree, I can read EVE font pretty fine.

I am barking at the wrong tree? I didnt address my post to you.
Font size and type in this matter is one and the same thing. I ain't gonna explain it to you if you can't or don't want to get it.
And again, as I said, even if you can read the font correctly at the moment, reading such small font or type for a longer time, it might hurt your eyes.
REALITY CHECK
Thx for this horrible example of it that show so good why there be complaints!
One of the few things Runes of Magic does right is their Font size and style its good to read.

I have excellent eye sight (it tests better than 20/20...I can see at 40 feet what most people can see at 20 feet) and bad fonts bother me too. It's not an eye sight issue (though I'm sure that's a factor). Some fonts are just better for on screen reading. There are fonts specifically designed for use on screen versus on the printed page. There's no reason they can't be used.
I'm planning on getting a much larger monitor for just such a thing. I'm thinking a 32" or 37" 1080p television. Instead of moving the monitor I have closer, because that would make no sense at all.
I can not remember winning or losing a single debate on the internet.
Hi,
It was announced during the FanFest 2011 that the font will be replaced relatively soon™ !

While you did not quote me, your post very much followed everything I said and as I am only one 'on the other side' of the argument, I assumed your post was aimed at me, which I do not think I was wrong, was I?
Small font does not hurt your eyes. What hurts your eyes is long periods of time when your eyes are fixed at certain distance and angle. Your eyes, pretty much same as any muscle, need exercise otherwise they suffer atrophy and loss of flexibility.
It would indeed make sense to move closer to your screen...
Surely font needs improvements but I think this is probably a major source of the issue. EVE got tons of information that needs to be displayed on the screen and you can't treat the game as other games you play. Afterall, it is spreadsheets in space.
Indeed you are wrong, in fact I shamelessly have to admit that I didn't even read your post before.
Naturally, fixation at certain point on the screen is what hurts the eyes, and logically, smaller font or font that is more difficult to read (like the one in EVE) does require longer fixation to read it properly. Therefore, it might hurt the eyes in the long run.
REALITY CHECK
And again, this is font nearly identical to the font found in EVE (with the same size as the size of the default font on this forum).

This definetly does take longer to read, which increases the eye fixation time, thus hurting your eyes in the long run. (Note, this sentence is in Arial font, same size as the font of the text above).
REALITY CHECK
The EVE font is pretty horrible. You can increase the in-game menu size to 11 or 12 point, and you can make the channel font size considerably larger than that, which makes it adequate to my tired 39-year old eyes. (I use a 24" widescreen monitor to play EVE)
Give me liberty or give me lasers
I don't recall if "Team Best Friends Forever" is the right group, but I believe they work on "The Little Things" that might be annoyances in everyday gameplay. One example of a little thing would be stripping fittings on a non-active ship which, while seemingly trivial, does have its convenience and has made it into the 1.4 patch coming out 4/06.
I didn't notice any comments about font in the 10 pages of responses to the last "Little Things" dev blog so maybe this would be something worth bring up there as it seems to come up every so often here.
Personally, the font doesn't bother me. I'm not a spring chicken and have to wear corrective lenses, but maybe I've just gotten used to it over time. I can see how people wouldn't like it though and, being a presentation element of the game, you would think it could be more customizable (font face and size) without much impact, but that is just speculation. At any rate, so long as it doesn't degrade game performance, I can't see a reason not to encourage adding this sort of flexibility (aside from the idea that devoting dev resources to this would cost dev resources elsewhere which may certainly be a legitimate concern).
