Guild Wars 2: The Story Behind the "Commando" Joke

The Arena.Net blog has been updated with a post by Cinematics Lead Horia Dociu, called in the blog as the 'mastermind' behind last Friday's April Fool's joke about the Commando class. Check out why this was the perfect gag to play on unsuspecting fans.
As soon as I thought of the idea, I drew up some rough storyboards of potential skill videos. This helped me generate a big list of all the assets we’d need to make the profession reveal seem believable—video production, models, wallpapers, web stuff, etc. A full profession reveal takes a lot of work because we’re still very much in the midst of production, so I also had to be creative with managing our resources. I started with the awesome eagle logo that Daniel Dociu, our art director, designed. Then I drew up a rough concept of a cool commando uniform and asked Delly, one of our talented cinematic artists, if he wanted to help. On his own time and in between assignments at work, he created a full custom 3D sculpt and generated the in-game model. I then borrowed a pellet gun from my friend Brent and had Monty and Matt, our cinematics animators, rig me up in our motion capture suit. This provided us with rough canned animation for them to tweak and put in game, saving us the complicated process of making the commando actually playable.

Also, I love just how much effort is put into good April 1st jokes by top notch companies.

And with this revelation, my interest to GWII goes back to zero, yet again.
A MMO with pure huge technology humans VS high-fantasy setting would have been so epic...
Now the description of this game is back to "more of the same".

Looks like the Profession page is now back to normal but at least we can still go to the commando page by adding "commando" to the url.
Anet is so great. They are just a bunch of fun loving folks that are good friends and love games. They are super talented and have amazing humor. They are unmatched in their innovation and desire to produce quality products. I feel like they are a part of my family and i have nothing but a zen like respect for the complete euphoria that is anet.
blizzard is still riding the wave of properties that the guys at arenanet created for them when they were called "blizzard north"

The real joke is them trolling us by wasting time on this instead of releasing one of the actual classes people are craving for.

You're absolutely right: ANet sucks for playing a joke on you on April 1st.

Honestly, i never had any special praise for Anet before, even when i heard about all the games they have made specially GW 1, nor i have any favorite dev back in the days, i thought Blizzard was my fav, but after they have announced the GW2 project, and with all this going on, i think i have a clear idea of who my fav dev is now, Anet is just getting classier every day!

It was entertaining to watch the 'skill previews'.
But now I can't help but expect some sort of ingame reference to this, later down the line.
Loved the april fools footage, only videos of this game i've seen that made me interested in it. Might try it out once a trail comes along because the first one just bored me despite friends playing it and telling me how much fun they have with it.
A childish joke would be something small and not very well planned, this on the other hand is a Manly joke. Only real men go this far.

I love how the whole article was about how the people at Arenanet put this all together in their SPARE TIME, off the clock. ... and people complain about it.
Gamers truly are the most spoiled people in the world. 'What? For free, you try and amuse me? DAMN YOU, if you have enough free time to not be working nonstop, you should use your spare time to work even MORE.'
Sheesh. Reminds me of kids who spit on their parents because the new BMW they got for their 16th birthday has the wrong color of leather upholstery.
