Damian 7 is my new hero tell it brother! It is ironic that when the everyday joe that plays this game like me to relieve the stress of the day may enjoy mass killing! Instead of punching my boss in the face i play this game! Damian could not have put it better dont holler at the masses because they used what you gave them to better their paid for toons. Those who are against farming stop asking to be farmed play the game how you want you pay for it! Posi is a crybaby that just can not come to terms with the fact that players are smarter then he or his develpment team! Tell me that they had no idea AE could be farmed like it is! They lay it on the counter like a snicker bar and tell all the kids we are going out nobody better eat the candy! I for one am for all the farming we can do their is no top end content to interest me anyway. I want to make as many toons as i can so my account will sell for more by the time the devs (and they will) throw this game in the shitter!
Just a quick question, I played CoH for a while up until a few months ago. When they were talking about the Architect issue, they said you would not be able to get drops from mobs in the player made missions. Did that change when it went live?
As for player made content, I remember doing that back in the day with MUDs. I think that there could be a good future in it for a company who pulls it off properly. I'm saying that separate from CoH, I'm not bashing it or anything. I haven't tried the latest issue so I can't comment.
As for PvP, it was a big draw for me. Then I learned the bases were messed up and it was disappointing. I've pretty much stopped keeping track of it and got bored with running the same cookie cutter missions over and over again. I love the character customization and some of the other features, though. All in all, it is worth checking out but I would be hard pressed to get into it for an extended period of time.

... Don't get me wrong, I'm not trying to crap all over this. As I said, this is a MAJOR step forward in the developement of this beloved genre, and a welcomed one at that. I am just wondering if anyone has been feeling like I have, like the majority of the game is being abandoned by the player base. Much like I felt when everyone started grinding for Holocrons like zombies in SWG (which was really the beginning of the end of the golden age of that game). I love the spirit behind the AE, and I love being given the opportunity to create and play in others' creations. I'm just afraid the rest of the game is going to turn into a ghost town based on what I've seen the last couple of weeks. Maybe it will blow over once the newness of the AE wears off, but a major shift like this in the way a community plays a game is a big red flag for me when I'm an already contented player.
I don't have any hard numbers for ya nolf, but I can safely say that CoH is -and has been- loosing subscribers. I had noticed it before I ceased play in July '08, and I see no reason why players would have stopped leaving the game since then. Now if your familiar with the "life-cycle" of products, you can say that this is normal and maybe even expected. But I believe that this abandonment by players is being amplified by the constant mismanagement of the game. For example. My main reason for leaving CoH was the absolute disregard for the PvP portion of the game by the management team. It seemed that the PvP was showing little improvement with each new issue and nothing fresh was being added. Compound this with the fact that several bugs were going unfixed. In the months leading up to July, I had been noticeing more and more the absense of well known players. I came to find out later that these players had cancelled their subscriptions. I decided that this was a good idea, maybe until a few new Issues had been released to address my reasons for leaving. I had planned on returning to the game. Then Issue 13 came out and, figuratively speaking, took an elephant shit on the part of the game I enjoyed most. nolf, you sound real bumbed-out in your post so I'll end this reply on a positve note. Champions Online is in the final stages of completion and gaining momentum for release. I've heard this game reffered to as "City of Heroes 2" on several occasions now. Maybe your time to leave CoH1 has come.
Have fun in Champions Online. I hear it doesn't have ANY PvP at all.
This is incorrect. There is PvP in CO out of the box.
It will have arena matches. Not the kind of pvp most people really want.
arena matches = dueling = extremely lame and filled with weaksauce & stupidity.
so, NO, no pvp worth a damn or worth mentioning.
out of curiousity... which comics are the ones where heroes go someplace and beat the tar out of each other for fun and practice?
sure isn't the xmen's danger room.
Nah, arenas are a true test of ones skill inside the framework of a games pvp. Ganking is not. Thanks for trying though.
um, arenas are the lamest pvp add on since online pvp came into existence. no thanks for trying involved.
true pvp has NEVER been in a sterile environment. but hey, thanks for not being able to answer the question.
I disagree, I've played many, many types of pvp in games and, while randomly ganking people can be fun I guess, it's akin to running up to someone and sucker punching them instead of actually having a 1 on 1 fight with them. Arena (prepared) pvp is a true testament of ones skill inside a games pvp metagame. That's why, ya know, they have tournaments for real life money based on this...lol
On top of this they've all but offically announced they plan to release a villain version of the game in posts, which is undoubtedly going to bring open pvp zones just as City of Villains did in City of Heroes.
Regardless the fact still remains that there will, in fact, be pvp in CO. I hate to come off as aggressive and, I apologize. It just really urks me when people think that randomly running around and fighting people with half their health bars or when you and your friends take on a much smaller group of opposing players as "real" pvp. I agree that I do want this in game because it can create some really fun and interesting moments, however if I had to choosee only one to be in a launch I would choose the more skill dependant arena based pvp.
If you don't think it can be fun check out Guild Wars sometime it's got an amazing pvp system in place, and gank free!
As for your question- you must not read many comics, I guess? Superheroes have been fighting each other for sport (training) and other reasons throughout the history of comics.
my question was asking for examples. you gave none. wtf? who are all these superheroes that are going around beating the snot out of each other, for practice?
edit: to everyone QQing about ganking----
what is with the constant 'ganking' QQ? xmen have the danger room to practice -- xMEN - plural. the fantastic four have combats with robots and whatever stuff Mr F sets up -- again, the fantastic FOUR - plural.
getting ganked, cuz you're an antisocial miscreant who can't be bothered to hang out with a few people in a pvp zone; BUT will QQ about ganking? double U tee eff??????????
arenas aren't about pvp. it's the same lame dueling as what you used to see in say ironforge, where people would "duel" each other.
pvp'ing (again using wow) would be when a bunch of horde and a bunch of alliance would all end up in/around booty bay and fight for hours. groups of people - on both sides.
never heard batman QQ cuz the Joker had a bunch of henchies, or the Joker teamed with Penguin AND Two-Face and Bats had to fight all of them AND their henchies. Never heard Superman QQ that ole Lex was sending all sorts of robots + henchies against him.... the list goes on and on....
what people want is the single player experience, but to be able to say "i'm a bad ass in X MMO". it's a massively multiplayer game - wtf would the pvp be single player?????????????????????????????????????????
could we please get correspondent writers and moderators, on the eve forum at mmorpg.com, who are well-versed on eve-online and aren't just passersby pushing buttons? pretty please?
Oh look, I exploited the fact that my attack powers can defeat enemies to get xp .... We obviously have a different opinion on what an exploit is and is not. About the only thing you mention that I consider to be a straight-up exploit of the system is the whole Winter Lord affair and even then I'm not sure if it truly fits. There's a difference (to me) between using a power/powerset/at (even if it's an overpowered one) or running a mission/story arc/tf and specifically creating a bit of content so that it can only be populated by an enemy that gives drastically out-of-proportion XP when compared to its difficulty with the sole intent of PLing as fast as you humanly can. Seriously now, how the flipping heck do you consider making a specific SG team an exploit?

You realize how silly it is to suggest I should play more and post less when you've posted nearly twice as much in two-thirds the time yes? Oh no. I post about 1.25 messages a day over on the CoH forums ... however will I get any of my gaming in around my massive and time-consuming forum posting habit. <gasp>
...
I mean come on now.
if fire tankers herding zones was not an exploit; then, why did the devs nerf it?
same thinking/logic goes with every example given - OR - do the devs nerf items they do NOT consider exploits??????????? certain "things" are overpowered and players take advantage of it and no one has been punished for doing this before, powers/mechanics were simply changed.
sort of like.. .the "exploits" with the ae system? risk vs reward, over powered, exploit, whatever you want to name it --- the devs "nerf" these items for a reason. just playing ae and pushing it to the limits, just like fire tankers, just like running freaks/tv/battle maiden missions, just like winter lords, just like 30 minute speed katies, just like everything else that's been considered overpowered and subsequently nerfed... but hey, only on AE will we do some sort of punishment. that is not logic a reasonable person would find acceptable.
if you can not understand this simple line of reasoning - i can not help you.
i type/speak as if i am communicating to individuals that are both reasonable and intelligent. anyone that can not understand what HONESTLY are basic concepts, and/or said individuals are fanbois -- my posts will never make any sense to you.

I hate to play the necromancer, but I find myself curious after almost 2 years of absense.
How did it all turn out? I've always missed CoX since leaving, but not enough to resub to try it.
Whats the current state of the game?
How did the MA farming issues develop?
I really hope that *insert game name here* will be the first game to ever live up to all of its pre-release promises, maintain a manageable hype level and have a clean release. Just don't expect me to hold my breath.
Mission Architect is dead as well as the farming of it.
Of course Issue 20 introduces end game raiding content, which will have to be farmed to obtain the new incarnate powers. It is hard to say the state of the game given this quarters numbers are unknown. The trend seems like a decline, but the servers seem full after the release of Issue 20 (yesterday).

Devs messed up PvP badly even after extensive community feedback and to this day claim the changes were for the better. PvP has died on all of the servers except for Freedom and Virtue (ERPvP is lulzy)
One set of exploits is patched, another arises in its place. Commandos and Laser Robots were the latest farming craze as of the last time I was subbed. Besides Freedom, AE farming seems to have subsided to the point where most of the buildings are in fact devoid of all players, period. The risk/reward ratio has become so skewed to the point that only hardcore RPers and lore enthusiasts find the experience worthwhile.

Short term popularity must be contrasted with longterm staying power.
Personally, the more I read about the grinding necessary for obtaining the Incarnate components, the less inclined I'm becoming to even try it at all. Locking some components to only being obtainable one per week is really what I see as an unpleasant way of forcible implementing the carrot and stick.
Remember, it has to be fun to be a game. Grinding is a bedroom activity, and the point is definitely not to do my wife as fast as possible.
I would agree with what I've seen so far, that I20 appears to be a step backward for CoX, which, to me, was beginning to look up with the unlocking of the alpha slot. Apparently someone decided that the existing method was too easy or fast, and introduced a mechanic that forces teaming. I don't mind this, generally speaking, but the community itself does range in quality across a very wide range, and while I've met a good number of awesome people, I haven't joined an SG that's managed to corner the market on them, nor have I found a large enough group that I team with regularly to make this turn of events anything remotely pleasant for me. If I want to work on my Incarnate powers, I'm going to be forced to randomly team with people, having perhaps 2 others that I'm familiar with and know to be good players, tops. This might increase over time, but I'm not holding my breath. Still, I will give this new direction a try and see how it goes. If we have enough people who practice good teamwork skills on the new leagues we're forming, I'm sure it could be an incredibly enjoyable experience, and could take players to the next level in terms of their ability to work together toward the achievement of a common goal.
However, right now, all it looks like to me is a LOT of work on random teams for rewards that, while they look nice, I have absolutely no interest in grinding out over any large span of time. We'll see, there's a few months left before my subscription expires, I might get to see a few tweaks and even I21 before then...
Unfortunately, I20 appears to be a horribly mistake for CoX. Forced teaming (raids) for a small population game is not a recipe for good results.
While I agree with the general sentiment (forced raiding isn't good for a small population game), I really wonder if you understand the context of your statement because it doesn't seem to apply here. The two raids released have minimum size requirements of 8 and 16 players. Hamidon raids (typically filling a zone) may have died off, but Rikti mothership runs draw more than what are required for these raids on a nightly basis (usually 3-4 teams, ~30ish people). Given the new LFG (looking for group) UI can quickly put people together that are interested in running that content, i don't see this being as problematic.
The bigger issue, no pun intended, is that basically most veterans have been sucked out of the game world and are raiding with all of their 50s. The one thing CoH has been so good at, having people playing at all levels, new players and old, has significantly receded, although it hasn't even been a week since release of the i20. Hopefully it will die down, and the siren call of creating new alts will kick in again (likely with the next issue and some more powerset proliferation).
