Its 2011 guys, weve seen polished themepark success via rift,

this year will be HUGE its all down to

Blizard versus Bioware in a dual, who will win? swtor is looking sooo good.

Can bioware dethrone World of Warcraft??? Im just too excited to watch the events unfold this year.

How about you guys? Youve got 2 heavy hitters fightin each other in the ring, im curious who will come out on top this year.

Heh, a duel is a nice comparison, but I see it more as all of them coexisting together, sometimes peaceful, sometimes competing.

It's like, when you're at a club party with some ok and some good looking chicks at it, everybody's having fun but the party could use some livening up, and then a group of bombshells and vamps, drop dead gorgeous, walk in and start partying with the rest of the crowd. Sure, some might like the latin girl more and others the blonde it-girl, while others favor the exotic beauty with the sleepy, mysterious eyes, but all in all they've together boosted the party with more energy and excitement.

One has already arrived, Rift, but this is the party crowd that I see arriving to liven up the MMO scene:

    - GW2

    - SWTOR

    - The Secret World

    - TERA

    and somewhere next year:

    - ArcheAge

    - Firefall

    - World of Darkness

    Good year for MMOs ^_^

As well as the 'heavy-weights' releasing this year such as TOR (Stories & Dialogue corner) and GW2 (Painterly Dynamic Events corner), the others are still well worth following closely eg Tera (COMBAT), Blade & Soul (Art), Rift (Dynamic Content), Secret World (3 FACTIONS, Modern world) and............ Firefall looks worth a serious look if only because it's a shooter & free & so far looks damn slick.

There's also interesting developments in the Mobile scene with Gameloft releasing a wow-clone of highest quality "copyingship" which they excel at on mobile ports/clones, called: Chaos & Order while there are currently a few out already: Free for All: Five mobile MMOs that are not Pocket Legends . While B* is due out in June by Spacetime Studios and looks like the most polished of the lot potentially, to date. For sandbox mmos Ryzom is Free-to-Play and may make a comeback.

Finally the mmorpg's Winter of Discontent is beginning to thaw.

I have been burned by to many releases to get too hyped over, but i sure hope i leave this drought  soon, i need a new mmo badly. all i know is they all look very nice, but now i seem to wait a few months before even trying let alone buy a new mmo.

Making so much noise you dont know when to listen.

Yes following MMO developement and releases has become more fun than actually playing them lol.

im seeing 2012 as being the year for many mmos

yes many could launch in late 2011 -- but 2012 is more likely

Very interesting analogy.  I have to wonder what is this excitement over Firefall though, it seems to be an FPS and not really an MMORPG.  Like a more alien/gritty version of Global Agenda(which I don't like either).

My analogy is more inline with world superpowers.  While we have America dominating for a long time, it isn't alone anymore and it gets along peacefully with other superpowers (EU, China, Israel, etc.) but War could happen ANY day.  Grim analogy I know, but a good one none the less, especially when Blizzard deletes Rift posts and competes by releasing patches with similar content.

I'll be surprised if even 2 of those launch this year.  My best guess is SWTOR and TERA will make it, GW2 and TSW, 2012.  WOD is a 2013 or beyond, can't comment on the others, not on my radar.

If several great games launch this year, the winner won't be this game or that game.  The winner will be us.

It could well be a very good year, but several truly great games in a single year is awfully hard, so I don't see it happening.

  • CastillleCastillle Member UncommonPosts: 2,679

i agree that Swtor might be able to make it this year along with tera, but barely.  GW2 next year definitely.  TSW and archeage maybe next year..but will prolly be delayed to 2013...   WoD   at least 2013 o.o

The game that will attract the hardcore crowd will be one that comes out of nowhere that no one has heard much about (most likely indie). Big, expensive games with lots of marketing are geared towards the casual gamer.

  • drakes821drakes821 Member UncommonPosts: 535

I agree this year will be great.

I too am a bit skeptical about those games being released though, I'm expecting delays.

As for who I think will come out on top...if you mean who do I think will have the most subs at the end of the year I still think it will be WoW. I think it will take some time for the majority of casual players who play WoW to transistion over to other games. Of course if SWTOR unleashes a crazy add campaing (which I'm sure they will) they could maybe come out on top, but I wouldn't bet on it.

Personally I don't see TERA being that big of a deal, I'm sure it will do decent but it will never be a big name and will probably die out a bit when SWTOR or GW2 comes out.

  • drake_hounddrake_hound Member Posts: 773

GW·2 won´t make it definetly this year .

Also it is in best interest to delay cause of fantasy overburn , but we shall see maybe in 6 months that problem is gone.

TOR while delayed for god know what reason (probaly something EA made up for E3 shocker or financiel manipulation)

will have to release this year , missing the boat this year , definetly won´t go well.

Tera is on target though .but they are in for  a rough ride ..... while graphic marvel and new feature will it be enough to hide linear questing .. and the asian grind system .

Anyway should be a beter launch then last year . atleast this year we can really pick a winner .

Huge in terms of number of big names titles, not so huge in turns of a MMO that will keep a solid player base. The list you mention is much like the list of solo games coming out this year, as they will be played for about the same time before being dumped.

Yes, another year of getting excited for what's coming. Where have I seen that before?

    Once upon a time....

  • UOvetUOvet Member Posts: 514

Not sure I'm as excited, maybe next year.

TERA - Aion w/ different combat system. I really don't know that much about it. Korean game stylized for Western audiences (I'm not seeing it but OK).

SWTOR  - More I read more I'm intersested actually. Hope they can pull this one off cause I'm sick of fantasy.

GW2 - I don't get the hype? Instanced/hub based game w/ PvP. OK? Cool? We'll see their "dynamic content" ala Rift (right..).

Only thing I REALLY want is ArcheAge, and Secret World looks cool but its Funcom and who knows.

Where do you get the "instanced/hub based game" from? And by no means are the dynamic events like those in Rift.

I'm pretty stoked for 2011 for gaming in general. Firefall looks amazing, and I cannot wait to sink my teeth into it. I absolutely love the style of gameplay that Borderlands provided, and Firefall looks similar enough that I know I'll love it!

And to go non-MMO for a second... Diablo III. Need I say more? ;)

Those two aside, 2011 looks to be an amazing year for gamers of all kinds, but especially for us MMO junkies (and casuals alike!).

I just hope some of these amazing-looking titles don't turn out to be total letdowns!!!

Are we discussing who can make the same game better?

Will develop an original MMORPG title for money.

There will be some letdowns due to law of averages. If all of them happen to be amazing games well then I dare say it would be the best year in the history of gaming.

I can't see how people think this was a good year. If it was we would all already be in a MMO we love with no thought of what is on the horizon.

This is a good year for playing a few new MMO's that you might play after the first month, thats how badly the mighty MMO genre has fallen. The concept of finding a MMO you will stick with for a few years has gone.

I don't know how to enjoy an MMO anymore. So instead I will troll the MMORPG's forums.

Seriously though, I can't play a new MMORPG for more than a month without finding flaws. D3 and The Secret World are the only MMORPG's (If we can call D3 that) that are even looking appealing, and on that note I'm sure D3 won't keep me for more than a year.

MMO's are a dying breed, but I have hope that Blizzard has not lost their touch and "Titan" will truly be a sight to see. I'm an MMO Romantic.

Well, so far have Rift released and TERA is very close. TOR, TSW and GW2 probably releases this year as well. That is probably the largest number of well funded MMOs releasing ever. Just that makes it a good MMO year.

The quality of all those games must be decided induvidual by playing all of them of course.

Sandbox people might not like this since these games are themeparks. As far as I know are there only 2 well funded sandbox games in devolopment at all, WoDO by CCP and a unknown project (Elder scrolls online?) by Zenimax media. If you don't recognize the last studio it isn't that strange but you probably recognize the parent company Bethesda. These games wont release in 2011 so sandbox MMOs wont have a good year.

Still, several games by large and well known studios make 2011 a good year. Earlier years have 2 games from semi known developers been better than average.

But please tell us which year you think had more good MMOs? 2003? (DaoC, SWG, DDO). There might be some but that was some time ago.

The only thing im probably going to give a shot is Tera, otherwise i'm only looking forward to several single player games this year.
