Would you play your MMO on your iphone?

IsturiIsturi Member Posts: 1,509

With the IOS becoming more and more popular and lets face it most of these devices will probably replace the PC for some people. Are we seeing a trend that could lead to the PC becoming its own Dinosaur? Guess time will tell but for now game titles like Order & Chaos Online, Blackstar, World of Midgard and Empire of the Eclipse. Have made there way to the iOS. Now agreed some of these MMO's are blantent WoW clones and maybe even ToR clones for that matter that for you to decide. It just amazes me that we are a socity now willing to accept a 4 inch screen devise with a tiny or virtual keybord and no mouse vs the BIG 23+ monitor with a real keybord and yes even a mouse sometimes a 14 button or more mouse.

Here I thought BIGGER was better. Guess im getting old in my thinking. Anywho If you enjoy this new frontier of MMO's then good. If you are like me and prefer a souped up muscle machine vs 3 cylinder iOS devise will all right then. Maybe if we hang on to our gaming rigs long enough maybe we can keep fresh MMO's coming to the PC with the better everything instead of going to our 3 cylinder cousin.

Nope don´t want to play games on my mobile phone .

Infact I kicked away my IPhone , and took back my small portable nokia cause i only use it for phoning .

    Bought a Ipad2 for gaming .

Anyway It is not that the IOS will replace MMO games , infact IOS gives small company developers a way to earn money.

Without being relied on publisher and all the hail mary paperwork that follows .

Or the need for so much backbone support .

It is a good move , so if you are a small developer want to create things , still earn that 5-10% cut .

IOS is atleast offering a viable market . to do your hobby and love .

No. Angry birds and Plants v's Zombies is about all the gaming I want from my mobile device, wouldn't want to play an MMO on it.

I don't mean to sound crude here, but games on my iPhone have one purpose, to keep me entertained when I go for a dump. That's about it :)

I dont even like to talk (or text) on my phone. Much less play a video game on it.

No. I use my mobile phone to check my mail/facebook/news etc.

I constantly get interrupted while using my phone so I don't play anything on it  let alone a MMORPG ^_^

Btw is this aimed only at Apple users as you specifically mention iphone? Not that I  don't love iphones but still....

Play the actual game on my iphone? No. Play some form of offline advancement or even daily bonus maintenance/crafting/questing aspect of the game on my phone? Yes.

Mobile apps are a great addition to an MMO, but never going to be a replacement.

This whole phone craze is getting out of hand. There's a reason I purchased a 24inch LCD flat panel monitor & use a backlit g15 keyboard, and a thumball mouse. High level of control, and far greater depth of vision when I'm playing my "favorite MMO". I might as well piss on everything I have should I ever choose to play an MMO on such a tiny device.

How could you even see your skill bar? Your statistics screen? Your inventory, or even the stats on items you just looted/bought/crafted to see if they're worth anything?

MMO's on mobile devices such as phones, ipads, etc == FAIL.

If you're looking for the next new "craze" in technology, get Holograms working, or a new textile control platform that replaces/upgrades keyboards & mice. Otherwise, GO AWAY! /shoo

No sorry I did not mean to just target apple users. It is just the more recognized this is all.

no i dont see the appeal at all.  i also think its not a good idea, we have to many people cuasing accidents because some idiot was either texting while driving or distracted while on the phone. i think as technology advances so too will the problems they create.

its an odd coinki seeing this thread as my brother in law got rammed (his car is totalled ) last week by a mini van that "didnt see" the stop sign because the driver was blabbering on his cell phone n was distracted.

Good list there. Those are something like a second-wave of noticeable mobile mmos ie ones that potential cut the grade of being [playable] and [mmo] on a mobile.

This link is an awesome read: GDC 2011: Spacetime pontificates on pocket MMOs

Here's a quote by Gary Gattis (Spacetime Studios CEO):

“Blackstar’s production design and overall polish will be unmatched in mobile gaming,” says Gary Gattis, CEO, Spacetime Studios. "We were able to nurture the IP to its maximum potential through years of development – a luxury never before seen in Mobile gaming. If you ever dreamed of a fully-featured sci-fi MMO that you can take anywhere, look for the first chapter of the Blackstar saga soon.”

So the quality is moving along with the increase in the potential that smartphone/iPad-like devices are allowing thorugh this mobile tech which as a market (ie number of devices) is increasing massively Eg by their estimate:

    Gattis:

“Everyone will be playing mobile MMOs in three years,” he predicts.

In terms of producing a game that has mobile connectivity providing players gaming on the go anywhere eg on the bus, at the airport, in bed, in short bursts and so on this is where mobile mmos are aiming for, adding this social element to portable gaming. Not only that but also across multiple platforms:

Spacetime engine:"a unique piece of tech built in C++ that allows for seamless global play across multiple devices, whether they be iOS, Android, PC, Mac or Linux."

A mobile mmo is not deliberately competing with a PC MMO (although the comparision is flattering probably!), but this new market, in particular sociable gaming driven by mobile smartphones (Andoid, iOS esp and possibly WebOS, Win7 etc) is a trend. If you like portable gaming and you like mmos or you like sociable portable games that's all that it takes especially as the price entry is so accessible and the market is far from saturation by comparison with the PC market.

    No.

Maybe it's because I can read books so don't have to fill whatever voids others have to but phones are about the stupidest gaming system ever. Same for watching TV/movies really. It's great for looking up a quick bit of information like who was the asian guy in Megaforce or making occasional phone calls, or as an alarm or music player but otherwise phones are the worst solution to every other problem.

That's potentially a big part of mobile mmos, a younger audience growing up with eg twitter/texting as their social backdrop and conceivably owning a smartphone before their own PC and being able to take it anywhere eg school? Taking the eg of Pocket Legends or other smartphone games that allow this generation to dump their ds in favor of their phones; that and anyone in a boring meeting at work might dip into a quick game on their mobile! I think taking it as portable gaming -> mmo is good way of putting it more than the otherway around (See link Spacetime Ponitificates on Pocket MMOs above).

Personally PL sits next to Speedball 2 on my iPhone where I consider it an updated Gauntlet with added chat featues etc : )

I don't have an iPhone, I've got a smart phone.

That said, i love the idea of location-based mmos like Shadow Cities:

    http://www.shadowcities.com/

Couldn't care less about traditional mmos on smartphones, tho.

I did a little research on mobile mmos and this one comes off as fairly innovative ie location-social networking with swipe-gestures combat. Pretty cool, sorta reminded me of Beerinteering tho' without the booze!! But if I am out and about (not sat down) I'd be active eg taking photos of the world and so on eg street art. Really only Spacetime's PL and B* (out in next month or two) interest me so far so mobile mmos have a while to go yet.

Mobile devices like cellphone, Android and Apple pads, iPods and other multimedia players are where a lot of computing is heading. There will still be PCs and consoles, but mobile is so much cheaper to develop for, so much more accessible and supports so much more integration that the idea of spending 20-100 million dollars on developing a blockbuster MMO for PC is probably becoming a lot less appealing as the years go on especially in certain markets where the audience is historically much more critical about graphics, hostile toward microtransactions and very resistant to change.

I don't even like to read emails on my phone (as required by work), and I absolutely hate browsing the web through the iphone.  I can't imagine having "fun" playing on the darn small lil iphones.

I'll stick to my PC until virtual reality becomes popular.

    Unequivocally YES!

I am one of those MMO players who doesn't have the time to sit in front of their souped up machines, and wants more RP out of his RPG anyways. I'm on the road, I'm busy, and I travel 75% of the time on the road, globaly. Sometimes that old broad band don't cut it, er where I go.

In fact I created a software company to make the MMO I want to play on the iOS.

I use my phone for music, browsing and calling/txting.   I tried it games but it never really hooked me.  I found that they just arent that enjoyable to me.  Dont get me wrong, Id definitely play Dungeon Keeper if it was on the Iphone but I dont think Ill ever feel immersed or as focused on them.  If I were playing on the subway, Id prefer to just play facebook games or something that I do more watching than playing.  If I were at home, Id like more depth to the games.

I tried like that WoW clone MMO and I didnt like it at all...  I tried other games and didnt get hooked much at all.   Whenever I had the chance to play the games, I just end up lurking here or 4chan instead lol.

I see a lot of negative responce on ths subject.  I don't normally post on mmo sites, unless I feel moved to do so.

Yes, all the claim to be "mmos" for the iphone fall short of being a real mmo except for the recent release of Order an Chaos.  For once I have to say this is an actuall mmo.

The world feels large, although lacking a detailed enviroment.  There are more quest to do then most f2p mmos.  I haven't felt the need to monster grind at all, and I have leveled to 18 in about 20hrs of gameplay. I don't know the cap, but based on the talents, I would guess about 45. There is a full out auction house and a crafting system.  You gather materials from ore deposits and killing mobs. Of cource there are guilds, chat, bank, mail, etc.  It might not have everything we want in an mmo, but it is a real mmo.

The controls are a little rough, but I found after a while, I could play fine. It would be better on an iPad. I'm not on the first American server, which I heard is bad about spam and other annoying stuff.  On my server I have found mostly mature acting players.  There are bad moments, but they don't last long.  There even seems to be a few people starting up a roleplaying community.  Given the fact the game cost money and there are subs (plus a cashop sadly), I don't think this game will draw in a huge younger audience.  Also I find the game can be challenging when going solo.  You lose a big chunk of gold when dieing, so it is quite frustrating.  It is not as easy as WoW, although all the graphics do have the WoW look.  Currenly I'm at a point in the game, I don't see playing this for short bursts.  I need at least 3 hours to play.

My husband has no interest in playing something like this on his iphone, although maybe his ipad.  He too wants the biggest computer screen possible.  I on the other had find it absolutley wonderful, I can play this on the iphone.  So I have to suspect my preferance for playing an mmo on my iphone might have to do with the fact I'm female and I have really tiny hands. I don't have issues with the small keyboard. I prefer to use my phone for the web and email over the computer if possible.

It is just so cute to have this.  I can play this in bed and play it when I go over to my parents house.

Well thats what I think, and I know I'm in the minority.
