Flyff, or Fly for Fun, is a fairly popular free to play online MMORPG published in the US by Gpotato. I’ve played this game for about for 5 years now and I feel I’ve come to an appropriate conclusion on it.

The graphics are very cartoon-y, clearly anime-inspired as many RPGs are. I personally did not like the visuals in this game whatsoever though because they appear so childish and crude. Skill animations also leave a lot to be desired and the game would do well to implement a little more variety in this aspect. The character creation process is also very limited, and players are given few choices in their character’s appearance. This was somewhat of a turn off for me, as I don’t like looking the same as other players.

The gameplay, which is obviously the most important part of a game, is another area where Flyff falls rather short. There simply isn’t a whole lot to do in the game’s world, and character progression is largely grind-based. I quickly grew weary as the game has very minimal quests and almost nonexistent storyline, though I have come to expect that from MMOs. The combat system is particularly yawn-inducing, and ultimately boils down to clicking repeatedly on an enemy until your character, with its repetitive attacks, kills it or is killed.

But ultimately Flyff is not a bad game, but it is certainly not good. I will probably stop playing it now as its a game that has quickly led me to boredom. Though that is not to say that nobody will like it; with over 6 million players, it has to be doing something right. However, the game is just not my style, and is average at best in my opinion.

Diaspora and Mystic Realms of Alhanzar were the first MMOs I played - played both until Diaspora went under.  Moved from them to play DAoC and then Shadowbane - from release until death.  Still can't find anything good out there while I'm hoping for a real DAoC II.

And then, of course, there was the first time you approached Camelot.  That was simply a gorgeous spectacle.  Finally, there was that first dungeon just outside of Camelot.  It was one thing to be running around with your party and even occasionally seeing other people running around, but when you're in tight corners of a (non-instanced!) dungeon with fast respawns and large aggro radii,  people from other parties would be fleeing because they got in over their head and then you realized you had to haul ass too, or you were in the grinder as well.

And this is why I fell in love with mmo's.

Never played DAOC but I do love non-instanced run-ins / dungeons for the chance of seeing other players & player groups.  The chance of seeing and working with different groups on an off-chance encounter has been a nice little draw for me when it came to MMORPGs.

UO but didn´t play it for long .

I think the most fun I ever had online was dungeon siege , back then when I could meet people all over the world .

    When I hosted a server , meet a woman from singapore , canadians , koreans , chinese .

LoL was so funny to talk people from different parts of the globe with broken englishe ,since I was dutch .

And all we do was couple of hours of farmgrinding monsters and chatting .

Same as most mmo back then , crafting we just hacked and edited our weapons manually .

See real crafting :p too bad it didn´t last long :( ..

Before we got seperated between western and eastern , then later on european and american zone .

WoW in summer 2005. I'm 36 now so I could have played one of the first mmos but I was a single player rpg guy until WoW so that's the way it worked out.

Star Wars Galaxies. Before the dark times, before the NGE.

Before that I was a MoH player with no desire to play an MMO as I thought it was all roleplayers with certain rules ect but took a gamble on SWG as I was a huge Star Wars fan and from that moment on, I was hooked.

I played on EU Chimaera and the community was the best I have ever had the pleasure of experiencing and I doubt I will ever experience again.

EvE Online .... back when there were only about 12,000 accounts.  I loved the vast universe and the sheer beauty of the game and the satisfaction of training up for my first Battleship (a Raven of course) and the inumerable ways to make isk.  After about 2.5 years when I finally got into the "good stuff" like alliance warfare and the intergalactic spying and stealing and intrigue, unfortunately the games popularity and the invasion of the gooneys and the large capital ships and mega fleets made the game into such a lag-fest I just could not play anymore.  I thought this was the only online game for a long time and then when I heard of others with "shards" thought they would be no fun with too few people.

I stumbled onto WoW (thank God) and have been playing it ever since with a few breaks and a small sojourne into Warhammer.  Tried a buncha trials.  I am spoiled by WoW's polish and the realizm of the animations and attention to detail now.
