I will probably DL the trial anyways to give it a shot... but I love to hear perspectives. Let me tell you a few things first to set the stage for the type of info I am looking for.
First I am a long term EVE player since beta. I love EVE.. I dont care that a game is similar or even if it was a copy with some differences.. I think its smart and good for competition. I also am glad to see someone taking ideas from a game like EVE rather then taking ideas for a game like WOW.
I love my pvp. So how is the PVP in this game? Do corps fight over territory? Is there espionage and meta gaming?
How is the population in the US time zones?
Whats your overall assessment of the game? If you dont like sandboxes to begin with then this probably isnt a good question for you.
I am also trying out Fallen Earth right now which seems pretty decent, but this caught my eye and may be closer to my style... im not sure yet. Have any of you played Fallen Earth and this and prefer one over the other? Why?
Thanks in advance!

Fallen Earth is completely different from Perpetuum or EvE. If you want a new experience in a game where you literally make everything from scrap/scratch and get a real feel of post-apocalyptic Earth, try Fallen Earth. And keep in mind, melee is king in PvP there - unless you come across somebody who has robotic precision aiming at you with a mouse.

I've played all 3. I still play Eve and FE.
Perp just felt... toooooo slowwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww..... Eve is "slow" when you have to do 20 jumps, but Perpet is just slow out of the gate. Your robot is slow, and you always have a long way to go for any mission you might be doing. It's nice you can get 2-3 missions in the same general area so you don't have to keep going back to the hub every time, but it is still a long and usually boring drive back home. Now, I only got to using the ..... industrial? robots (I bought the mining one) and yes, that picked up my cash flow some, but see how far I had to go, and the rate at which I was earning both skill points and cash, I just felt it wasn't worth it. The combat was a bit clunky as well (and expensive for a newbie). Now, I'm sure once you got to the uber-cool mech type robots, the game picked up, but I just couldn't bear the thought of all that grinding.
IMO, most ppl who will turn their back to perpetuum are those, who didnt´t get the chance to participate in Beta Corp (0.0 sec) goals.
I am in the game for the pvp and that has many more aspects, than EvE has. I have and still play EvE since 2005.
But one has to take account, that this game is very new and hasn´t got a devolopment history of 10 years, like EvE has. It startet pretty bad in the old days as well.
The game is not slow, compared to any other game, where you have to travel manually. Autopilot like in EvE is not present in any other game I personally now off. In FE, which I have played as well for half a year, the travelling takes a long time manually as well. I found, that for me, that the pvp in FE was not quite so thrilling. There is a similar method like clone jumping implemented shortly, which will make travelling into highsec faster.
Perpetuum does not make the newcomer experience very easy. One of the reasons is their scared of "gold china farmers" and trial account exploitations. So it will be a bit harder now, until you be able to earn decent money. Even tho said this, with the newest patch, you have a kind of bounty on kills, in form of plasma. Wich you can farm and sell for money to NPC´s.
If you really want to get the feeling of perpetuum, i would advice you to spend the 8€ or whatever, which you usually spent on a couple of pints. Find your self an established Beta corp, and get into pvp.
Yes their is territorial warfare over resoures, roaming gangs, etc.. and yes this is always in steady improvement.
Maybe you want to have a look at my post as well:

Go for Fallen Earth it's Fallout on Crack.
Perpetuum wasn't terrible but it wasn't amazing either, it's in the ehhhhh... catergory.
Everquest and Everquest 2 Veteran.
Yeah I am going with Fallen Earth. Perpetuum wasnt terrible.. but after 7+ years of time vested in EVE.. I felt like I was starting EVE all over but without all the initial excitement..lol FE feels different to me and I am sort of excited to play it. I think Perp could be great though so I am definately not knocking it.
Answering question from the top down... (from a self-confessed fanbio, truth is I have played many many MMO's over the years and I really truly enjoy this one for the first time in a long time)
First I am a long term EVE player since beta. I love EVE.. I dont care that a game is similar or even if it was a copy with some differences.. I think its smart and good for competition. I also am glad to see someone taking ideas from a game like EVE rather then taking ideas for a game like WOW.
Not really a questions but, worth addressing. PO is similiar to EVE in many respects, but not a copy or a clone. When people suggest that it drives me nuts but they do belong in the same genre, I think the key difference is in combat. Terrain and Line Of Sight (LOS) are a BIG deal!!! Combat is much more active and player skill driven here. Under the hood the mechanics are very different though you probably won't notice until you really start to dig deep... I cannot tell you how many people have in general chat have gotten frustrated when vets try to impress that what worked in EVE will not work here. It's similiar but different.
I love my pvp. So how is the PVP in this game? Do corps fight over territory? Is there espionage and meta gaming?
Great!!! Player conflict is the central aspect of content here (like most new sandboxes). As mentiononed above LOS is a big deal, also WASD movement... especially when tacked on top of the old MMO bastions that are embodied by EVE like fitting, skilling, tactics, economy etc. Yes corps fight for stations, though the game is dominated by a handfull of large allainces but things are really in a rapid state of flux... Much like EVE more 'space' is being added to spread things out and allow new comers to gain a foothold in beta (0.0). Lots of espionage and if you can view the boards (Corporate Dialouge) plenty of meta gaming as well.
How is the population in the US time zones?
I'm glad you asked, I'm east coast and play late night... however, all timezones need more fresh blood. Like most new MMO's the pop surged and then wanned... what remains are many bitter enemies but a strong core user base that are all interested in fostering the games future growth. You will find many people willing to help you get started, once you get off trial myself and a many corps that I war with will try to help you get on your feet and encourage you to join up (just ask, don't whine)... After that.. well your either a friend or a foe, nuff said.
Whats your overall assessment of the game? If you dont like sandboxes to begin with then this probably isnt a good question for you.
Best NEW MMO I've played in years... (yes i capped NEW on purpose)
As new MMO's go it is extremely bug free, enjoyable to play and well polished. The DEV's are extremely hands on and listen and interact with the community to a high degreee. As new content is introduced it is of the same high quality as the content that came before it (no pump and dump). However, new means that the game is still growing and evolving. Don't expect endless quests and NPC content to keep you engaged (JOIN A CORP, it's a sandbox!!!). Also, accept change. I would say that at this time more than anything we new new players.... However, their is still plenty activity as long as you don't insist on being a PUG.
I am also trying out Fallen Earth right now which seems pretty decent, but this caught my eye and may be closer to my style... im not sure yet. Have any of you played Fallen Earth and this and prefer one over the other? Why?
Never played Fallen Earth, sry.
Well I just tried Perpetuum and after a couple hours uninstalled it. The controls are terrible. I played EVE for over 3 years and this game is using the same engine, but it's incredibly buggy in this game.
Tried for over an hour to get thru the tutorial. Each and every function took 4 and 5 attempts just to get it to do what it was supposed to do and when i did get them to work the tutorial would not advance to the next step half the time. The only way to get it to advance was to back it up, come back to the stage and re-do the action.
Now saying that... the graphics were very good and the people, at least in the starting area, were very friendly. If you can get past the buggy interface I think you may enjoy the game and it may have been just something buggy in the starting area.
Shame actually as I'm bored of EVE and few of the fantasy style games can hold my attention. Actually managed to get a character max lvl in WoW before it bored me once again.
Not sure we're playing the same game TBH... It's been one of the smoothest releases that I've been a part of in many years.
Incidentally this is not the same engine as EVE, GUI looks similiar and they belong to the same genre, but play for a month and the difference become aparent.
You know movement is WASD control right? You can use double click (Eve style movement) but I don't think anyone actually pilots that way, hope thats not where you were having trouble.
A while back I was trolling the intertoobs for a new game when I stumbled across Perpetuum Online; A Hungarian borne MMO based in the distant future on a far away planet where the avatars are Mech based as are the mobs with a large skill based PVE and PVP system.. Booya! It sounded great!
So when it came out the other day, I was one of the first to sign up. And I have to say I’m having a good time with it, but I’m getting ahead of myself..
Now I want to give a fair description of the game, and I want to do my best to review it for its own merits, but its going to be really hard for me not to point out the similarities with Eve Online.
That is to say, its really similar in a lot of ways.. You could sum up a lot of the game by saying; Eve Online has space ships.. Perpetuum Online has mechs.. And you’d get a pretty fair idea of how Perpetuum works.
i have been with it for 3 months now . i try not to let comparisons to other games get in the way of enjoying it
theres a unique feel to the game . cost is right and pvp is fun as heck . need good corp to work with
I started playing a few days ago and in that time I have made the following assessments.
1) It is EVE Online with robots.
2) It has a gameplay compared to EVE that I would say is comparable to the gameplay of Rift to WOW. That is that it is the same basic game but more robust. I think they took the basic EVE concept and matured it nicely and of course it lacks the shere volume of content that EVE has.
3) The player base is small and clearly comprised of mostly EVE players.
4) The graphics are indy but the responsiveness is excellent.
5) The company must recently have received an influx of cash + some good consulting. Their are adds appearing more regularly. The rating on this site means that they are getting some people to put in a good word for them. I believe the next few months will tip the scales for them - I just don't know which way. I for one am going to stick with them. Competent devs are a nice thing.
In summary. If you want to get in on a really good sandbox mmo early, this is the game for you.
I like Perpetuum a lot. It is a better combat game then Eve imo. There are actually chases that can happen instead of the warp to 0 and dock or jump type game play of Eve. Combat feels more natural in Perpetuum. WASD movment is a plus as well. It feels more real than Eve's fight system. Eve needs line of sight in combat like Perpetuum has; Line of sight alone is a reason to play Perpetuum.
Something both Eve and Perpetuum need are rewards that are more robust for PvP. Combat pilots need good income from PvP, especially if they are the ones on the front lines trying to protect the ones doing the mining. There needs to be a way you can profit from it more than just protecting choice areas and looting imo. I want an in game option for corps to be able to set automatic bounties for corps that are set as enemies. You could have payout based on how much damage you contributed and higher rewards for bigger mechs. Then it's game on man!
It is actually easier and more fun to protect miners in Perpetuum than in Eve. Warping around is just not very good for combat.
Perpetuum combat is the best out of all the non FPS mmo's I have played. The only thing that would make it better would be first person shooter mechanics and jump jets I think.
both jump jets and player created contracts/bounties have been suggested multiple times in the features section; just fyi.
Currently Playing: Perpetuum
MMOs Played (most time spent to least): World of Warcraft (BG/Open world PvP focused), Lord of the Rings Online (PvMP focused), Warhammer Online (BG PvP focused), Global Agenda, Age of Conan, DC Universe Online (PvP focused), Runes of Magic, Allods, Aion, Fallen Earth
Well i never played EvE. The concept of the Eve style gamed is interesting, with time based progression and a complex array of skills that determine how you preform, your role, crafting ect. This is all setup to be a "no way in hell your going to ever be maxed in everything"
However i never wanted to jump into eve, didnt like the space theme, didnt want to walk into a game that was so old, when its time based, heard a lot of negatives about the community assuming they are the most inteligent gamers on earth ect.
So this game came out, it was indy, which i like, it had the eve concept based on robots, i like that.
Gave it a try for mabey 3 months, with two accounts.
The skill system was amazing, compex, interesting. After i figured out the basiscs, i had a plan, what i was going to do on each account, one miner and one rail gun combat account.
It was a small world, and while i like the mico managment that was combat, and the explore and mine aspects, i started to grow weary of the community.
My assumptions was that it was a segment of the EvE community playing for the most part, and it started to show. See nothings better than chatting while mining and guarding that miner with my combat, since, well pvp was rare, which added to boredome (talking about the beta island). When there was pvp it was in throw away robots (also terribly boring). However the community seemed very anti social. I would get raged on, then ignored for talking about things that...well that didnt interest them. The community seemed to take great pleasure knowing that if they ignored me, based on the type of game it was, that it was a permanant exclusion, and that the corporation i was in was noob and getting ignored by them would exclude me from ever joining any competative corporation. The topics that drew rage were...well any topic to be honest. The community wanted a silent general chat, or a general chat coversation involving only people they knew and respected. Problem is the community is terribly small. Also these people would relish the fact that they had pull over smaller corporations, often stating that they would get you banned from your small corporation or risk them declaring war on it. It was quite lame, since most of the discussion that involved these guys raging were normal conversations, just on subjects they didnt fancy and involving people they didnt know.
So there i was mining, guarding the miner for an attack that never happend, wishing i could spark up a conversation like in the good ole days of mmorpgs, but not doing so in fears that i would forever be locked out of a "good" corporation.
I was in a small noob corporation, we did missions out in beta, that never drew any action. We did the whole resourcing as a co-op thing, with miners, haulers, guards ect, however lack of any action meant that you could go afk during it. Ofthe i would take my combat off to find some mob robots to farm.
Towards the third month, i was yearning for an active and social community, it was kind of non existant, as the above mentioned elite community stomped out a lot of the casual discussion and friendliness.
I decided not to continue subbing, in hopes that they would add some more content and the game would grow in population, to out weigh these "eve pro's" stranglehold on the community.
TL/DR... Game has a great skill system, its complicated, combat is good, community is small, elitest, and very dictator like in how you act, what you say and what you do in game. Its a fun game run by super serious people (dont go along with them and they will pressure your corporation to kick you). Small community when looking for action that wasnt in throw away robot zergs. Lots of AFK mining and accounts that are paid for but not active, just racking up skill points over time.
