Desperately in search of a game that can hold my interest.

I have played nearly every major and many minor MMOs. Sadly I've reached a point that I simply can not find a MMO that I consider worth a crap. There are several in the pipeline I may enjoy. But are at leat 6 months away. If not a year+. As for what kind of MMO I would like, that part is hard to describe. So I'll give examples of ones I have played and enjoyed to a degree.

WARNING: Contains Wall'o'text and some possible anger from games past.

1. LOTRO

Ironically I "HATE" the normal game itself. It is inhumanly boring and cookie cutter piece of crap. However, the minigame that is a part of it I absolutely loved aspects of, called monster play. Where you play as the npcs. While I truely enjoyed the concept of it, it's fundamentaly broken in that it has never been balanced once since the game started. One side (Non monsters) has such a overwhelmingly god-like advantage that I find it unplayable after a short play with my bloodpressure so high I'm in danger of a heart attack. (Or buying a plane ticket to the companies headquarters to "correct" the balancing myself.) Sorry I needed to get that off my chest badly. Back on topic, the idea of playin the npcs with minimal grinding involved was a fun aspect. Ruined only by horribly unintelligent developers, not knowing what fantastic concept they must have accidently made. Or stole from someone very creative. (As you may be able to tell, I'm still pissed about finding a nearly perfect MMO for me, that's ruined only by a horrible development team.)

2. Astro Empires

While it is a graphicless, simple, and painfully slow paced game. It did have the aspect of unlimited levels. With no caps. I'd likely be playing this right now, if I wasn't many months late to joining the latest server. Sadly doing so now would mean I'd be flattened like a bug by everyone else, with no chance whatsoever of catching up.

3. Haven and Hearth

A fantastic world shaping/survival game. Sadly it's in alpha and it shows it. With many exploits and bugs. And the fact that survival is never really hard. Two hours after playing you have so much food you could single handedly feed a 3rd world country. And after this the only thing to do is pvp. Which is fine by me, I love pvp. Sadly this game has one of the worst and most cluttered pvp/combat systems I've yet witnessed in a MMO. But the crafting/world shapping is a truely wonderful aspect.

4. Champions online

Fantastic combat system, excellent character creation/customization, vast array of skills to mix/match (With sub). Sadly it's a ultra grindy and rather boring game mission/quest wise. (There are some good parts.) I definitely will check back when they add the ability for players to make their own quests/missions. I have no doubt the playerbase will make much better content than whats already there.

5. Eve Online

I'll make this one short and quick. Loved the sci-fi setting, spaceships I loved as well. Believe it or not, I like the time-based progression more than the usual grindy BS in most MMOs. Played for several years. Sadly it got old eventually. Only reason I don't still play it

6. Tabula Rasa

Perfection. Or as close as any have come. Simple as that. I loved it more than any other game I played. Sadly it no longer exists.

I could go on with another 20 games easily. But these were some of the best I came across. I'll take just about any suggestion I can get at this point. But I should suggest non-mainstream MMOs. As I have played pretty much every major MMO that exists. I spent nearly 2 weeks searching for something that had any hope of being good. And had no luck. This is my last attempt to find one before going back to single player games for a year at least.

To find an intelligent person in a PUG is not that rare, but to find a PUG made up of "all" intelligent people is one of the rarest phenomenons in the known universe.

I'm in the same boat right now. Been playing MMO's since City of Heroes beta in 2004, and have played just about every one of them since.. Guild Wars, WoW, Everquest 2, DAoC, and have been in many betas.. and I have gotten burned out.. but I'm still looking for that one MMO that can hold my interest, now.

I am currently playing Champions Online, mainly because it's free, and a few of my friends are playing it. But, I think I'll be holding out for Guild Wars 2, which GameStop seems to think it will be released in June.

I'm basically in the same boat.  Rift held me for about 7 weeks, but now I spend more time playing with the soul calculator than actually playing the game.

My suggestion, and you've probably already tried it, is Ryzom.

FF11, its 10 dollars on steam , you can easily tweak the graphics in regedit, roll on bismarch server and we'll smash things together.
