That's assuming pre-WOW MMORPG gamers, which I consider to be the actual MMO gamer population cares about popularity. Our genre may not of been popular, but the communities were close-knit and our games were a lot more complex, so I'd rather have a genre with a close-knit population with more complex games than a genre full of rude anti-social people and ultra-polished linear games that cost mega millions of dollars to make.
Hmmmm aren't some of those close knit complex games still around? Why not just play them?
Because they aren't around anymore/aren't supported anymore? The majority of them, the vast majority, stopped getting played for a reason, that reason is either the devs stopped giving a damn about it, or broke the game with an expansion or patch and never fixed it (SWG, DAoC, EQ)
... I dont think MMORPGs have been killed, otherwise, among other things, this site would have already shut down.
The majority of MMOs on this site aren't even MMOs. Guild Wars being one, even their devs don't call it an MMO. WoW is hardly even a real MMO by the original definition. It's more Diablo with a monthly fee.
Um... how? How can you possibly justify that? It's killed the genre for the last 6 years.
Killed the genre? WTF are you talking about? Before WoW there were only few MMOs, played by nerds and discussed by nerds only. Common folks never even heard about Everquest, DaoC and SWG. After WoW MMOs became a huge hit and almost everyone playing them now. Lots of good games released thanks to WoW's success and desire of developers to take a piece of a money pie.
Um... how? How can you possibly justify that? It's killed the genre for the last 6 years.
Killed the genre? WTF are you talking about? Before WoW there were only few MMOs Incorrect, there were dozens of them. There were about 6 big AAA MMOs that had a growing subscription base, each unique from the other, sharing almost no features in common, then dozens and dozens more smaller MMOs trying new ideas , played by nerds and discussed by nerds only and that's a problem why?. Common folks never even heard about Everquest, DaoC and SWG and common folks have never heard of WAR or AION or Rift or LotRO... . After WoW MMOs became a huge hit and almost everyone playing them now Incorrect again. EverQuest was the first big hit MMORPG that "normal" people knew about. WoW was the second. Those are the only two, and both are frowned upon by the general public. The majority of people STILL haven't heard of WoW, or if they have, they laugh at it. And it didn't bring new people to the genre, it brought new people to WoW, and they stay in WoW. . Lots of good games released thanks to WoW's success Really? Where? All I've seen are WoW clones that have less features than games that came out in the 90s, that can't sustain a subscription base beyond the first 3 months of launch, then slowly dwindle into obscurity and desire of developers to take a piece of a money pie Desire of developers to try to get WoW's success by cloning WoW and doing absolutely no innovating so far hasn't work. We haven't gotten more than 1 AAA title in the past 6 years that have tried new ideas. .
You sound like, what some people call: "oldfag". No offence, but its true. There are such people in every genre crying that games in 1980s were so much better, the grass was greener and same bs all over again. I have only one reply for you: get over it! Its no EQ era anymore, WoW did everything right thats why became so popular. Yes there are lots of clones, but there are some unique titles also, and more coming soon.
Originally posted by Zolgar I'm thinking no. The worst thing to happen was other developers trying to ride on the success of WoW and pump out themepark games that lack innovation.
Who cares we can not change what have happen 6 years ago so lets move one and hope some other companys can challenge WoW as it should be, its healthy and some change dont hurt.
Games played:AC1-Darktide'99-2000-AC2-Darktide/dawnsong2003-2005,Lineage2-2005-2006 and now Darkfall-2009..... In between WoW few months AoC few months and some f2p also all very short few weeks.
You sound like, what some people call: "oldfag". No offence, but its true. There are such people in every genre crying that games in 1980s were so much better Really? I don't really see anyone claiming that about most games , the grass was greener and same bs all over again. I have only one reply for you: get over it! Sorry, when a genre with almost limitless potential, your favorite genre, turns into something completely different, and stagnates and produces one boring clone game after another for 6 years in a row, you're going to get upset too Its no EQ era anymore, WoW did everything right thats why became so popular Nope, WoW became popular because it was a) easy, b)simple c) had a huge brand name push d) had the biggest marketing budget in MMO history, and well, the rest is history. I guess You'd be fine if the only games people started making were Wii Sports games? It's the best selling game of all time, it did all the right things, look at all the gamers it brought to the market! Who cares if Bethesda and Bioware are only making Bioware Sports and Bethesda Party games now, get over it! . Yes there are lots of clones, but there are some unique titles also Really? There are unique AAA MMOs? Where? I'd love to play one, and more coming soon Yeah, doubt it, hasn't been true any other time people claim it .
Of course you can keep crying how "WoW killed the genre" if you like
I will continue crying it, and I'll continue being right. If I sound like an "oldfag" you sound like some 15 year old who never played any of the games you pretend to know so much about. You don't have any perspective. I do. You may not like it but that makes my opinion a bit more valid.
I don´t think WoW is the worst thing that happened to the MMO gender.
WoW made Mmorpgs popular and because of WoW´s success lots of developers are creating MMos for us to play.
I actually think WoW was one of the finest games i´ve ever played.
Now it has changed a lot, making it more casual...and all automated by LFG tools so you don´t even see people running around the world like they used to...
It´s getting old too...6 years for a game are too many. But it will always have a piece of my heart since i had great times playing it
But for me the time to move on to other games came a year ago....
Now i´m playing RIFT and will be playing SWTOR & GW2
Who cares we can not change what have happen 6 years ago so lets move one and hope some other companys can challenge WoW as it should be, its healthy and some change dont hurt.
Some change don't hurt, but WoW certainly did. I care, my favorite games are no longer being made, and kids who have never played my favorite games try to claim their's are better and I should get over it.

I'm pretty sure 8 years of MMO experience and about 100 online titles played gives me enough perspective. The main difference between us is you crying about how everything is bad, while I'm enjoying my time in such games as LoTRO, Vanguard, AoC.
I don´t think WoW is the worst thing that happened to the MMO gender.
WoW made Mmorpgs popular and because of WoW´s success lots of developers are creating MMos for us to play.
<rubs temples> when are you people going to learn? It didn't make MMOs popular. It made WoW popular. WoW's market increased. The MMO market grew more or less as it would have. The people playing WoW aren't going to be playing most other MMOs. They're WoW fans, not MMO fans. Just like Wii didn't bring 100 million new gamers to the table. Those grandmas and house wives are going to play Wii bowling and then keep playing it. They're not going to switch to Counterstrike or Elder Scrolls. And NO more MMOs aren't being made. WoW clones are being made, then quickly dying off, because they're uninspired clones that bring nothing new to the table. Now in the market, you have 2 healthy growing MMOs, and a ton of dying ones. Before, you had at least 6 AAA MMos all vastly different and growing.
I actually think WoW was one of the finest games i´ve ever played. Low standards? Or do you just like Diablo style games instead of MMOS ?
Now it has changed a lot, making it more casual It was always the most casual MMO on the market..that's one of the reasons it did so well...and all automated by LFG tools so you don´t even see people running around the world like they used to. It´s getting old too...6 years for a game are too many Not if a game is good, well maintained, and keeps doing things new. WoW has NEVER done anything new. .But it will always have a piece of my heart since i had great times playing it

Now i´m playing RIFT and will be playing SWTOR & GW2
So now, you're tired of WoW, so you switched to a WoW clone, are awaiting a WoW clone, and a long shot GW2 MMO?
I will continue crying it, and I'll continue being right. If I sound like an "oldfag" you sound like some 15 year old who never played any of the games you pretend to know so much about. You don't have any perspective. I do. You may not like it but that makes my opinion a bit more valid.

So if you've been playing MMOs for 8 years, what was your first one? Runescape? Cause anything'll seem good after that.
OH YEAH! ITS ALL WOW'S FAULT!! THEY RUINED EVERYTHING..
Ok get real.. Bliz did not kill the genre with WoW.. WE DID! Cant blame you for trying to blame somethign thoe.. Its human nature! However, if you look threw the smoke and mirrors, The general population is the cause of the horrible games we have seen come out lately, Blizzards World of Warcraft is only a catalyst to the ever going beast called INSTANT GRATIFICATION! Either way, point is that WoW is not some devil that destroyed a genre.. And the only people to blame for all the 'wow clones' out there are devs that dont have a stich of true creativity in them.. (could also be chalked up to just plain old greed to but w/e im done ranting)

Very easy to say when you're on casual winning side. Listen, you can have all the casual games you want, be happy. But when it takes away what I love, then there's a problem. Do you think the Scottish just "got over it" when the English took their land? Or the native Americans? Do you think someone who got robbed should "just get over it" when the people that robbed them enjoy the riches they stole?

I play video games since Spectrum 64k and i must say i loved WoW...i´m not ashamed of that. Just got tired of it a year ago.

You can like WoW all you want, but you can't claim it was good for the genre when you weren't here before WoW... that's just dumb. To jump back to my invasion analogy, you can't, as an English soldier, sit in colonized Scotland and say "Yeah, this place is so much better now that we're here!"

Don't know about the Scottish but I am part Native American (Arapaho) and have read "Bury My Heart at Wounded Knee" and know quite a bit about their history to know that they didn't just lay down and take it and most likely still haven't "gotten over it", but your comparison is utter shit.
You weren't robbed of anything. You don't like WoW or any game that bears a close resemblance to it so why are you acting like people are enjoying something you used to enjoy when you keep proclaiming that none of the games you like are anything like WoW?
If someone started with WoW, as many of you did and you loved it and thats logical offcorse its your first mmo, who am i to argue and dispute this. I can't and i don't, for me WoW is crap and ive played it for few months when it launched but i never could get into it and never realy liked it.
But as fan saying its best is also rediculous becouse you like it and millions others also like it dont mean its best, becouse there are many reason why it was succes.
At right moment launched with right budget with already HUGE fan base behind it(Warcraft-Diablo-Starcraft fans) and it was easy to pick up almost every PC could run it, and many new gamers who never played online or PC started playing WoW there first ever mmo offcorse they liked it alot thats CRYSTAL CLEAR right?
And so many more reasons why it was a succes, still dont mean its a best.
For me still Asherons Call 1 was best ever mmo released in past 15 years for others prolly Everquest or others Lineage2 who am i to argue there taste and view of whats best?

I was robbed of an entire genre of unique innovative games that I enjoyed playing. That genre no longer exists.

We all know this. The purpose of this thread is to discuss what caused MMOs to die, what the original cause was, and that's WoW. No, it was laziness on the side of developers that lack the skills to make new, innovative games that caused this slump.
Rift is the best example of the best quality a WoW clone can possibly get, and even now that game's future is hazy at best. And don't claim that Rift is innovative, those features that are different and new have been done before and are obviously just stapled in an act of faux-innovation.

I was robbed of an entire genre of unique innovative games that I enjoyed playing. That genre no longer exists.
