MMORPG is kinda "muddy" back in the days. it's hard to say when a "true" MMORPG started. many would claim Meridian or UO, and some go even further back into the MUD's... but IMO the genre of MMORPG didnt really come into its own till EQ took off. before EQ1, most MMO's were closer to graphical MUD's then actualy MMORPG's I guess the 1st person point of view with a real 3D engine is how i see the start of a true MMORPG.
There were games that came even before Neverwinter Nights. Like Island of Kesmai and Habitat
I googled it on the net and got these answers:
Meridian 59 (1996)
The Realm Online (1996)
Nexus: The Kingdom of the Winds 1996 (Korea) 1998 (United States)
Tibia (1997)
Ultima Online (1997)
Lineage (1998)
EverQuest ---1999
Dark Ages (1999)
The Forth Coming (1999)
Mir 2 (1999-2000)
Neverwinter Nights (1991)
Conquer Online (a newbie actually compared with former games, only 8years so far)
This is one i didn't see in the posts.
Runescape!
WTF theres a" game list" at this page?!
NWN does probably not count as a MMO. Even if there were many persistant personal servers to play on and the game had many of the MMO basics (it is still the best multiplayer game in my opinion and that includes all MMOs) its limit of 128 players kinda makes it hard to call it a MMO.
Many games today have up to 128 people on a server without being MMOs and while NWN sometimes had persistant servers many were on for shorter periods.
So I still think Meridian was the first real MMO, and not just because it started me off (I played NWN as well of course).
Yea but I remember in 1991 128 people was a MIND BLOWING amount of people to me. 5 years later yea 128 wasn't a big deal but in 1991 at most you had a 2-4 player arcade style game. 128 people on a personal server was INSANE.
yup you cant compare those 2 they are 5 year apart. 5 year was alot of time in the 90s computer world. 1991 the CPU of a computer was 8-16mhz and 95 it was up to a woooping 66-133mhz. and internet did not take a good start until 95. so 128 ppl are alot for that time and it sure is a mmo.
Loke666 if i take your comparison i can also say that race cars 90 years ago should not be called that because my personal car is faster and better.
Benjamin Franklin wrote the best quote to use for MMOs in development.
Believe none of what you hear and half of what you see.
Kingdom of Drakkar - early 90s
Terra: Battle for the Outland - 96 or so.
