While a PVP style game will probably never match the numbers posted by WOW, there is a solid market for it. The trouble is, most developers fail miserably at the implementation. Dont blame the PVP part, ER has some terrible bugs, lag issues and poor mechanics that hold it back.
"Sean (Murray) saying MP will be in the game is not remotely close to evidence that at the point of purchase people thought there was MP in the game." - SEANMCAD
As I stated in alot of DF, MO and Earthrise threads allready, the FFA-PvP isn't really the problem.
The problem is, that there's nothing else then FFA-PvP.
To attract players, you need a whole lot of PvE-content in addition and you need safer areas, where people can do something without having to fear being ganked all the time.
EvE Online is the example of how FFA-PvP is implemented the right way.

Blaiming the 'pvp-ity' of a game concept for its failure is kind of silly.
Especially if it concerns a game with big stability and polish issues, proclaimed by just about any reviewer.
My brand new bloggity blog.
This may be shocking for you, but its because theres people that want to play them......*gasp* even though you dont want to.
Apparently stating the truth in my sig is "trolling"

ER doesn't have the player base to sustain it as a pay to play game for long. It'll either be dead or free within a year after launch.
