Just had an email from Sony Online Entertainment. Wen't into my junkbox. Don't know if it's legit or not so not opening. Funny thing is this email account is not tied to any S.O.E games.
Hackers are now spoofing the official SOE email and spamming it to tons of emails hoping to phish account information from people. Lovely huh?
All one can hope is that the fallout from this debacle costs Smedley his job. He is ultimately responsible for this mess they are in. Someone new might just have a chance to raise SOE from the ashes.
I just resubed to Station access like 4or5 days ago... i wonder if this data breach also includes the "verified by visa" info i had to give to sub?
this is just terrible all around dang you SOE and these crackers all the heck!
sorry for the rough languae
It won't. VBV/Mastercard Securecode (aka 3DSecure) is an extra layer of security handled by your issuing bank to ensure you are who you say you are. At most, when the exchange occurs (which happens between your browser and your bank's servers) the vendor - in this case SOE - get an authentication token back that they may store, but is pretty much useless.
Short version:
1. You enter your CC data.
2. SOE process it and get a request for VBV/Mastercard Securecode back from your issuing bank.
3. You enter your details into an interface provided by your BANK (though it may look like it's a part of the vendor's website).
4. Bank okays or denies the transaction with the vendor.
Sorry for the off-topic. plz gief back pre-CU SWG. thx.
I got one of the SOE emails today as well. Haven't had an active sub since Vanguard first launced. I hate having to give out my credit card information online. I prefer just using PayPal, but a lot of companies still don't accept it. Paypal doesn't solve everything, but I do feel safer using it though.
The more days this goes on, the more SOE will be hemorraging money. After their recent cuts, they REALLY can't afford this right now. Before you SOE haters out there laugh at their misfortune, remember that the families of their employees depend on this income. Hate SOE, it's both fun & therapeutic but let's hope this gets resolved soon.

Those that bash these companies don't care about the fallout. All they care about is that they are "right" no matter who has to suffer the consequences.

Yeah, just been hearing that is the case. I strongly recomend not opening any emails from them....But I am a bit paranoid by nature;)

thats strange as the email i got from SOE was just a bog standard alert regarding the breach, no where on that email did it ask for information.
just to be safe i have had a credit card and debit card replaced, i no longer believe or will ever trust sony with my details or debit/ credit cards again
If you think any other company is immune to this ki9nd of crap your delusional.

Embattled Sony Online Entertainment has sent out a new press release following yesterday's shutdown of Station.com. In the announcement, SOE admits to data theft from its San Diego location affecting over 24.6 million accounts.
This information, which was discovered by engineers and security consultants reviewing SOE systems, showed that personal information from approximately 24.6 million SOE accounts may have been stolen, as well as certain information from an outdated database from 2007. The information from the outdated database that may have been stolen includes approximately 12,700 non-U.S. credit or debit card numbers and expiration dates (but not credit card security codes), and about 10,700 direct debit records of certain customers in Austria, Germany, Netherlands and Spain.
With the current outage of the PlayStation® Network and Qriocity™ services and the ongoing investigation into the recent attacks, SOE had also undertaken an intensive investigation into its system. Upon discovery of this additional information, the company promptly shut down all servers related to SOE services while continuing to review and upgrade all of its online security systems in the face of these unprecedented cyber-attacks.
On May 1, Sony apologized to its customers for the inconvenience caused by its network services outages. The company is working with the FBI and continuing its own full investigation while working to restore all services.
How lovely. Got an email from SOE today saying all this. Funny thing, I haven't had an active subscription in years, yet they still kept all my information. Because of their hoarding of my information for, most likely nefarious purposes, my info is now out in the wilds. 30 days of subscription bs is not going to help myself and the thousands of people that long ago cancelled our SOE accounts. Guess this is what we should come to expect from this part of the world, the same place that sells used children's underwear in vending machines. Anyone have the link for the class action law suit against these fugs?
rofl, yup there hoardin g your info for nefarious purposes, not just because it stays there cause you put it in.

@Jessian. Yeah there is a legit email. All I am saying is that there are already reports of phishing emails. I don't know if I got one or not, had an email to one of my email accounts that is not or has never been used for gameing and has never been used in anything to do with s.o.e. The email went into my junk folder on said account. All I am saying is that from now on use common sense when opening any S.o.e email.
I FORGIVE YOU SOE. PLEASE HURRY AND GET MY GAMES BACK ONLINE!

so many ignorant people. You know how many companys have this happen and they just cover it up ? Good luck winning anything in a lawsuit people gotta prove they suffered damages which they wont be able to do. You also gotta prove negligence on SOEs behalf regarding their security. Good luck on that.

It's true that a lot of companies just cover up the digital attacks to their systems. Reason being that when they come out in the open with the digital attack they've suffered, they might suffer reputation damage, something SOE/SONY is really suffering from now (I'll leave in the open is SOE still has any reputation on these forums ) So from that perspective, I can only say it's brave for SONY to be so 'open' about the attack they've had and trying to resolve the problems caused by them (finally, a REAL encrypted database with our already known data)
About the lawsuit... I can't comment since I'm not from the US. But I bet that with the large identity theft that's been done here, most judges are willing to step pver the currently suffered damage, and look into the future on what might happen. Though here in The Netherlands (or mostly elsewhere in Europe), a lawsuit in this kind of cases will most likely fail. For that we have governmental privacy protection agencies to go after the company that failed to keep our data private (SONY in this case)...
I can't say I hold sony at fault for the attacks, maybe for their reluctance to announce this as soon as it happened. Still skilled hackers can get into just about any system, just look at that kid who hacked the pentagon not too long ago.

law suit or not this can not be good for SoE's already tarnished reputation with it past and present customers. thats gonna hurt them the most.
Isnt it funny though how many SOE defenders have shown up since the news of the breach. weve had years and years of scandales, lies, and underhandedness and yet the SOE defenders choose now to speak out. makes you wonder.

no one is denying that.
Every company that through neglegence or error should be held responsibile for the integrity of their information gathering and storage. Every company including SOE.
it sounds to me like your saying oh well since this can happen to any compnay we should just ignore the fact that it happened to this one.

Yet if Sony and SOE had encrypted ALL our Personal information and took better care of their network and infrastructure, this would have had far less concequences and would have made them a less attractive target!
The fact they were running on outdated sofware with known vulnaribilities and didn't find it necessary to properly encrypt Personal information of millions of users, made them an attractive and easy target for hackers!
Yes the hackers are criminals and should be found and brought to justice for what they have done!
But so does Sony and SOE need to be brought to justice and held responsible for their neglegence in the way they stored and treated all our Personal information!
