Why not? The twitter message really seemed like they were planning to go back online today so they are almost done with the works.

PSN is already down for about 2 or 3 weeks and they were working on investigation and fixes in the time being. Taking down SOE is a security procedure and consequence and as such does not necessarily have to impact the maintenance time.

If the rumors are true about the hackers taking another hit this weekend, i can honestly say you wont see anything back online just yet.

Again, it's not my job to Google things for fanboys.  The story is all over the place by now, do yourself a favor and do some research before flaunting your hardon for Sony.

Yeah, everything is on google, every piece of crap. That does not make it truth or real though...

actually he is right.you are making a claim which  has not been posted by anyone but you as far as i can tell about something very serious such as not using a firewall.this could be quite true but when you make such a serious claim its worth a quote.

i personally will be quite shocked and angry on soe if this is actually true.

ehh.. you are coming off as a douche.. Why not just quote your source in the future so you don't come across as a troll..

welcome to the internet.. people won't take your word for it.. no need to drag out a retarded argument

here's a random link.. there are others http://slashdot.org/story/11/05/05/1455249/Sony-Running-Unpatched-Servers-With-No-Firewall

From what I've seen from sony from other games I've tried from them.. they don't take warnings/feedback very seriously especially if its coming from a non-japanese person.

I think thats just ingrained in their culture though.. the japanese are extremely xenophobic and their culture permeates their company.

They have gotten better over the years.. and incidents like this will hopefully make them listen to us non-japanese more when we leave feedback for them. (it does appear they were warned well in advance)

The so called group called "Anonymous" caused a DNS attack before Sony was hacked which indeed did drop majority of the security.

  • herculeshercules Member UncommonPosts: 4,925

funny though i wonder if sony offers a million $$ reward  i am sure one of the anon will happily rat out the group members and network.

I am totally against hackers of any sort as i have seen them do damage to a small buisness and killing any company can only cost jobs of average folks .

Also hackers unless caught and punished will just move on to the next game-turbine,blizzard etc.History has shown there is nothing like 100% security in real life and certainly the net.

strong measures are needed and anyone that uses the internet that supports them are sad 40 yr old pissed off people living in a rat infested basement.

These hackers will have a reason for doing what they've done, otherwise it wouldnt be worth it, because the FBI will be all over it.

Yeah, I came across this information.

I just really need something more solid than some random guy enjoying his one minute fame of the internetz before I jump on conclusions.

I am not saying he is not right, but there is no evidence his claims are true either.

What did SoE hurt their feelings?  What possible reason would justify what they've done?  Costing people their jobs because they are unhappy about not being allowed to mod/jailbreak their consoles.

Can you explain how DDOS attack prior 2 weeks of intrusion into their systems 'drop majority of the security'?

I am very curious about that one.

I am very curious about that one.

"Sony has also blamed Anonymous for carrying out a denial-of-service attack which made it difficult or impossible to spot the break-in because Sony's engineers were trying to cope with the online attack that was knocking out their servers. The statement from Anonymous - which appears to have been authored by a number of people, but uses American spelling and grammar throughout - does not deal with the ramifications of the attack, and Sony's assertion that it enabled the theft by distracting the security team."

And just because your a "Source" kinda guy.

they stated their reason and to be honest its a stupid reason ,causing much more pain then any good.

Do they honestly think Sony  will drop their lawsuit against fellow hacker now?

It makes things even worse for that hacker now because every co operation and certainly every game company will now be behind sony to push on with the lawsuit .

Think about it .its exactly same reason why people do not give in to hijackers. Some hijackers actually are demanding (espically in 1970s) release of freedom fighters who were fighting for their homeland  but its generally accepted you never give in because they will just be more hijackers.

if anything this will make the government take a harder stance on hackers.no more few months in prison or even a job to track fellow hackers.Real hard time in a proper prison

Maybe SOE messed up and failed enough, and people might just be tierd enough to just sit by and watch. Or they might do it because it was easy? I think we will never know tbh.

Of course. Like virus protection programers making the viruses. Just think of the cash you could make for yourself, delivering the sickness then selling the cure.

Growing up with computers I have seen this never ending battle of hackers, and "security". ANY time new security hits, someone will find a way to defeat it. Any time new protection is designed, someone finds a way to destroy it.

The hackers have already proved that they can't be touched and will continue to do what there doing until the lawsuit against the fellow hacker is dropped, which in the long run will cost Sony alot less than what the damage the hackers have already done and will continue to do so.

Probably I overreacted a bit as well so I am also to blame.

The DDOS attack and first(?) intrusion into their systems happened probably about same time. If that was all planned, coincidence or someone exploited the opportunity are wild guesses only.

However, there was little Sony could do about it but deal with the ongoing attack. If the intruders got in, well, it is unfortunate but hardly to blame Sony for that just basing on sole fact that they got it.

Funny thing is, Sony was warned well in advance of the DDoS attack by Anonymous. And alot of people thought it wouldn't really do anything, considering how big Sony was. Now look what happend.

But now that the FBI is involved it seems kind of risky to launch another attack, thats just gonna get you caught. On the other hand, if they manage to make another succesful attack against Sony, I hope everyone who plays SOE/PS3 games are ready to play offline games for a couple of weeks more.

Once the DDOS attack hit, Sony could do very little apart from try fix it. Unfortunatly the word got out about the DDOS attack and Sony got hit yet again which couldnt be stopped.

The hackers obviously arn't stupid enough to get caught, they have proved that with what they've done thus far. All Sony has to do is drop the lawsuit on George Hotz and the attacks will stop, until that happens i can't see them stopping at any cost, unless caught.

How would they do that though? They are anonymous, they don't know eachother. As far as i know they just hang out in a (i believe public) IRC channel. And considering what they are doing they are probably all connected through proxies and have other security in place.

I found these attacks childish getting all pissy cause a big company didnt keep a promise and sueing someone for cracking they're product to get free games. These attacks effect game designers and even indies which are players like you and me.Players are effect by this cause people like to go on and do they're stuff.Im grossed out at this childish action by these hackers i thought they were like the batman of the internet attacking the greedy companys but they're doing it for yet again ill say it childish reasons.

I thought the lawsuit had come to a settlement. That's what I've read. Geohot said he was glad the lawsuit was behind him and that he'll never use a sony product again^^ Correct me if I'm wrong, but yeah.
