I didnt stick this in either the PC or console forum because its both, so im stickin it here in the general part.
Onlive.com is "cloud gaming" that basically streams you games. You dont need to download or install the games. I would love to make a big post about how much i love this program and how great it is but i dont have the time right now or the inclination (is that the right word?)
Today Onlive announced an exclusive demo for the new Red Faction game thats coming out very soon. Unlike the xbox demo this is a demo of the first 30 minutes of the game. Onlive basically only lets you demo games for 30 minutes so its just the first 30 minutes of whatever you can do i guess. Still cool.
Its a very cool program, no larger than 7mb on your PC, free registration and completely free use. You can demo games for 30 minutes and you can watch other people play their games without paying anything. You just have to register an email and all that ya know, very easy.
It is worth checking out, just do it.

Thanks for the heads up on this, but, what good is 30min of gameplay?
Esp. these days where the first 30 min is character creation. Even if you quickly just pass through that, you have story/intro/cinematics/tutorial... etc
Seems like 30 min is just enough to see how your system will run the game in question, no?
/shrug
Anyways... Still, thanks!
;-)
This is not a troll, flame, or anything else worth banning me over. It is simply my pure opinion, and I have a right to share it.
Go check it out. Its really simple, shouldnt take more than a minute to register and get the program up. I really cant put into words how much its worth just seeing.
I havent tried the demo myself yet of this particular game and i totally agree with you, but for the time being 30 minutes is a pretty normal and average time to demo a game for free. Its not even released yet ya know?
Ive demo'd a few games and sometimes it does feel like 30 minutes went by too fast but thats really mostly just because i was having so much fun and enjoying it.

i don't know how good Onlive is.. and.. its not something im thinking of joining.. but.. one thing i do recognise is.. that it is most likely services like this that will eliminate console gaming - at least in their current forms.. consoles are likely to end up nothing more than a net terminal.. and.. that would make them a hell of a lot cheaper than a Wii etc.. can you imagine playing on a console that costs maybe $50 games that you can barely play properly on a PS3 today? and for once.. it would bring MMO's to the 'console' i think once we see games like WoW etc.. appear on these kinds of services.. then Cloud computing will have arrived.. at the moment.. im not sure about the bandwidth and security issues.. but its early days
If you didnt have 700+ posts I would come in here saying you were just some bot advertising. You sound pretty close to a paid advertiser though.
Regardless, I'll pass. I have the money to pay for my games so I dont really need "the cloud"
Onlive has Its uses but its not that great.
Chances are that if your computer cant run the games you want to play, you probably have a crappy internet connection too, rendering onlive useless..
Just an assumption though.
Delayed responses, fuzzy screens.. all common things for Onlive.
Still, I'm really happy to see this happening - Perhaps in the future it'll be a viable way to game
pretty much what i was thinking about it.. i don't know how good it is now.. and it does sound like it has a few issues.. but.. with time.. .. the potential is definitely there.. be interesting to see how it develops
I'm definitely a major fan. If you thought i worked from them by not even posting what i really think about it thats funny. You should see the things i say when i actually do talk about it. I've been using Onlive for maybe about 3 months now. It does have its issues but for me personally they happen less often than actual great service, it drives me mad when i get "network problem" but overall its been a wonderful experience.
Anyways they tend to do really cool promotinal deals right now, obviously since theyre not very big ya know. But pre-ordering a game like Duke Nukem Forever gets you a free game with it or the console that they have. Your choice.
I think it was just yesterday they started offering the new Space Marine game with Darksiders for free (Steam also has that going on) but they also throw in a free game or console. So its 2 free games or 1 game and a console with that deal. Pretty neat.
You guys really need to stop judging before you try. "It could have lag" or "it could have this and that" i mean whatever, i dunno why you bring up random arguments of how it could be bad when you havent tried it.
Its free and takes up less space than AIM or yahoo messenger on your HD, check it out.

I just couldnt get over the fact that my shooting games ( only tried demos ) had like half a second delay, which makes things like headshotting absolute hell..
That was during beta though, dont know how far they've come since then.
Forgot to come back and mention their memorial day weekend sale.

Red Faction: Armageddon demo still rockin!
Hoping they have a good show at E3 this year.

Love my hardware, love my pc boxes and my collection and my total controll over them not some fague company somewhere in world who controll almost everything ive payed for NO THANKS.
Sorry i for myself agains this kind of service paying but never get any code and hope they have 100% guarenteed intrest in my rights over content. What happen if i buy a game for 20 euros(i take its much cheaper?) and they go bankrupt how do i get my game then is it lost for ever?
Good luck with onlive but its not for me.
I find onlive pritty good and im from UK and lag is almost 0, the best part is not having to download or install games,
Lets say you saw a pc game in a shop and you like it but wanted to give a demo a try,
with onlive you can just try the actuall game for 30 mins straight away no waiting for it to download, plus it is probebly also cheaper to buy on onlive then it is in a shop or you can buy a playpass for like 10 dollers and play all games none stop for a entire month or till you deside you had enough.

So not only do i have to register at there site also make money transactions to play there games online again no thanks even biggest companys these days are hacked.
Im realy amazed how easy all of you just do anything on internet and just put all your privacy at risk, is beyond me lol.
But if you like this go for it, i on other hand love my pc and hardware and my gameboxes collection on my book shelfs and controll wahtever i wanne do with it 100%:)
Only reason i would do it its becouse it prolly helps using less materials poluting our planet, but for now the risk give all my privacy and money to some company somewhere in world and get no code at all no way.
i'm a founding member of onlive. the service has greatly improved over the past year but still has a bit to go. and there are 0 mmo titles on the service which is what im waiting for. its all about internet speed and bandwidth so you need a very good internet connection to get the most out of the service.
live long and prosper
strength and honor
if urgent do it yourself
if you have time-delegate it
if you have forever-form a committee
I'm a big fan of the concept but there are 2 problems right now that keep me from using the service.
1. As has been mentioned, streaming just isn't powerful enough in most places for lag-free and continuous HD gaming. Onlive works pretty damned good but sometimes it just shy of good enough. A lot of people also don't have the bandwidth available for it.
2. Their game library isn't big enough.
Sadly, I would guess Onlive will eventually fail and down the road another company will do it bigger and better when more people have faster connections.
I think you hit the nail on the head here , alot of ISP's have download limits . Mine for instance will limit my speed after I've used a certain amount so their service would become totally useless to alot of people very quickly.
It's certainly a good idea. But for example if you like to create mods, use addons, create new maps or do any kind of customization, you are screwed, because they game is not on your computer.
Let's play Fallen Earth (blind, 300 episodes)
Let's play Guild Wars 2 (blind, 45 episodes)
You guys saying that Onlive will eventually fail are being silly.
Onlive just got the new Duke Nukem game, the new Deus Ex game, the new Red Faction game the new Warhammer: Space Marine game. All within 2 months of each other. I dont know what E3 will show but i have good expectations, nothing spectacular (that would be cool) but Onlive definitely has a future.
As for paying for games that you might not have in the future im not too worried about that. Im pretty sure they will have games on their system for a minimum of 5 years if they drop it at all. If i still want to play the game after that im also pretty sure i could find it for $5-10.
Obviously not everybody will be able to take advantage of it if their connection isnt up to par but im sure that will be more accessible in the future also.
You dont register for Steam? I suppose you may be one of the few that dont use Steam, your loss.
All it takes is an email account, personal info only comes into play if you want to purchase games. You can go demo games and watch people play on Onlive without putting in any personal info.
If you've ever bought anything online your personal info is out there, please stop with that argument, it doesnt work.

Actually most of the games Onlive has came from or is with Gametap. Actually Gametap has a much wider selection for the same monthly price. Every couple of months I do a month of gametap. Mainly when im burned out on a MMO.
Heck Gametap has Mount and blade, Drakhensang, Two Worlds, check it out for yourself! http://www.gametap.com/download-video-games/pc-games-Role-playing-category-25.html
I enrolled free when it was first advertised about a year ago. I made a profile and forgot about it. Coincidentally I just went back a few days ago and spent many hours playing demos. I have a fios connection..the lowest Verizon package available. Not once did I noticed lag of any sort. The games work smooth just like they are on the PC or console. It really is a pretty good deal. Right now I think you can suscribe to a growing pool of games (50 right now) for $9.99 mnth. ..or rent games certain time periods...like 3 days ..can't remember. Of..course you can buy them to access at any time.
There is another service like this too but I can't remember tha name off the top of my head. I have a free membership so I keep it on my PC. The console is a small unobtrusive box that comes with a controller much like an XBOX360 pad.
I have 2 concerns:
First: .I would never buy the games outright because , these days, who knows if the service will last and then you have no physical game to play. In my case...and many of you I'm sure...that could potentially be a loss of hundreds to thousands of dollars in games. There just needs to be a way to secure access to games you buy outright..like the option for a digital download of all purchased games.. in the event the service goes under...as part of the EULA.
Second: This could just be in my head...but it does seem that all the games have a light diffusion...a slight blurriness...very slight but still.
I certainly see this as BIG part of gaming now and in the future. I like my hardware too but why spend so much money ..especially for PC gaming when another server , most likely with better hardware , can do the rendering for a very affordable fee. In this case also giving access to all the newest games available. No worries about what new GPU will run your game or what console you should get or which version you should buy (if you own all consoles and PC)..Just buy and play. It also opens up access to more gamers who otherwise could not afford all of the expense. Now..I know some gamers (many really) are elitists...and I hear stuff like "Don't pick a hobby you can't afford" or "Get a real job" .Bullshit. I've been a gamer of varying degress and salaries..through bad , mediocre and great financial times in my life... since pong was invented. I look forward to the day all mankind loves and has access to video gaming. (cue the corny Globally PC motivational music) You're just going to have to get used to more gamers out there, casual or otherwise.
They also need to work the MMO angles out. Currently their are none available that I am aware of...but I did see WOW streaming on an early demo over a year ago. Now..in Onlive ..you can go to the arena and watch others play. Imagine your favorite MMO....your teamed up for an event or just exploring with your friends in a group. You're already on some form of chat...be it Vent or the Onlive chat (haven't tried it yet myself) .With this tech you could also have yourself in a window ..while your friends stream in other smaller windows..you can see all they do from their POV while you talk and vice versa. If you like RP you could even split the party up while a GM talks to each member separately during parts of the adventure. That's as close to original PnP for an MMO you can get . Sounds cool to me.
Anyway..I think ONlive is still free membership....I recommend everyone give it a go.
This is also one of main reason why most should never get onlive you just give up any freedom you have when you control all your own games on your own pc.
Looks like theyre gonna have a pretty cool showing at E3 this year.

Would of tried it but bugger it's only US.
A lot of people from countries outside of the US have used the program, theyre more limited on some of the games, im not sure how it works. But its totally free to try it so you could still check it out.
They just announced a UK version coming in autumn.
