Hi all,
I've got a group of 4 friends and we're looking to all play an MMORPG together... Since we don't have that much money, we're looking for something F2P.
What we're looking for on a game is (doesn't need to have them all, but having combinations would be good xD):
- Varied Class System: Doesn't need to have TONS (FFXI-like) but something in which being a different class actually means doing different stuff from other classes. (SMT: Imagine suffered from that)
- PvP
- PvE
- Entertaining World
- Accessible Specs (mid-range machines, since we only have laptops and only one of us has a mid-high class machine).
Thanks in advance,
K.

I can recommend DDO it is quite fun pvp is only in bar's though but still fun..Pay to play people (VIP) can get guest passes for VIP content for F2P players as well. So if you get a good guild with lots of VIPs you can do all content for nothing.. I Sub every so many months for a month or two just do do some VIP stuff, but when I don't sub I have some good friends that get me guest passes.. I play on Thelanas send me a private message if u decide to play, I'll try to hook u up.

I just started playing Eden Eternal - that might be somewhat in your ally in terms of what you are looking for. It has various classes that you can change and level up (your base level and your class level).
It seems to be a solid game, its anime so don't know if that might suite your fancy. Whilst it does have low to high spec compatibility without loosing much quality.
Its fairly popular at the moment - also you can get a CBT key from the main page at mmorpg.com.
Have a read, might be worth looking at it.
lord of the rings online is best f2p atm.imo anyways
You could try anarchy online if u don't mind the dated look(is set for a graphical overhaul but when is up for debate). If i remember there are about 14 different classes and each play their own role. The size of the game world puts modern mmo's to shame with tons of places/things to explore. Because of it's age it has low specs. Downside is that it is pretty heavy on the grind, but it's a random instance grind rather than just a mob grind.
As already said dungeons and dragons online has a good class system but no real pvp. Also a very haevily instanced game.
Lord of the rings was also mention but it doens't have the meaningful classes and again no real pvp. But it is very good on the specs front.
Guild wars could also be well worth looking into. As is planeshift, bounty bay/voyage century or ryzom if you want to try f2p sandbox
Even though it is in Beta Argo is one of the newest F2P games currently released. Try that out.
Even though I do not think that there truly is such a thing as "free to play" I would have given you at least two places to try. However, based upon your criteria (Varied Class System) neither of my suggestions might fly. I will throw them out there just for the heck of it though. If you like grouping with friends and PvP, try APB: Reloaded from Gamersfirst.com (they also have some other so-so "f2p" offerings). And/or, try Champions Online. You can make varied classed on the "pay" side but I think you are limited to a pre-made set of classes if playing "f2p".
Let's party like it is 1863!
APB wouldn't work on a laptop...
If free to play is what your looking for then you will need to scale back what your looking for as no f2p game offers everything, with one excpeption.
The 2 top f2p games are Dungeon and Dragons online and Lord of the Rings online. Both offer decent game play for those that are moochers. But what sets them appart is the ability to "earn" the currency to use their cash shops. Which is a great way to upgrade your account, ie zones, character class's.
If you are ok with dated graphics then Anarchy Online is a great sci fi based game. It will have many of the features your looking for, only draw back is that those that have paying accounts will have access to better gear. So pvp will be rough.
Now there are some non traditional mmo's that are fun to play.
Vindictus is a f2p "console type" mmo. Its just an dungeon instanced game with a central town. Combat is alot more fun then traditional mmo's. The limitations are the amount of dungeons you can run after the starting dungeons.
Black Prophecy is another great one. Space combat with a slight mmo feel. Very easy to play, and has decent pvp, which can be done as quests also.
Lastly is World of Tanks. This is a great game. As long as you can deal with lots of frustration and game mechanics not always working as intended. For Pvp and skills this is the game, but its not a mmo just yet.
I would have recommended Everquest 2, but at the moment anything Sony is dangerous to play. So bascially if its Sony, dont even go to their web sites.
Also eve online can be played completely free if u want to try, although personally wouldn't try for a while it certainly has been done.
1: Lord of the Rings Online
2: Is Final Fanasty XIV Still FTP?
3: Dungeons & Dragons Online
League of Legends.
There isnt a better game to play with your friends, you get non stop fun and lol's XD
Age of Conan has awesome PvP and it is going free to play shortly. They are also simultaneously launching a brand new PvP server for everyone to start fresh on.
