L2 was my first MMO and I have a lot of great memories from it. I was there at launch and played a couple years (if I recall, the server name was Erica). I have a series of questions as I am downloading the 14 day trial and was hoping someone would take the time to answer;
1. Are some of my favorite original areas still in game? This would include Cruma Tower and the little dungeon where Humans start that was directly north of town... basically curious if I log in will I recognize the map.
2. Still drop items when killed by mobs? and the follow up to that is do people still train mobs on you- fake death and then let mobs kill you to take anything you might drop? (this is actually what lead to my quitting the game)
3. Earning Adena... when I played it was difficult to earn Adena. I was always way behind on Adena that I needed to get the best grade armor/weapons for what I was able to use. It truly felt like the game steered you into 'buying' adena.
4. Auction house? Trying to find items consisted of running all over town inspecting seated players store's. This also meant if you wanted to sell something you had to stay logged in... royal pain.
5. Travel. Is it still a series of gatekeepers that will port you? I never had the adena to use them regularly and a lot of my play time was mindless running.
I guess with all of those questions/complaints it might seem like I don't like the game - but I honestly did love it. Just hoping a few of the things that pushed me away might have changed.
Comments
1...Yes some of the low lvl areas are still in the game.
Talking Isle with the Elven Ruins, Cruma Tower, etc.
2...You no longer drop items on death anymore, unless you are in a red state with more than 5 pk's & you die, then there is a chance of a drop.
3...there is still an adena grind, but it is not as hard as it was when L2 1st launched.
You can buy NG - A grade gear now from npc stores & also they have introduced lower priced Common Gear.
4...Still no Auction House
5...Yes L2 still uses the Gatekeeper system.
L2 is a great game, I have been here over 7 years now.
Thank you for the prompt reply!
Well I had forgotten about the Gameguard and the complete fiasco/nightmare that it always was for me. I've tried disabling everything in my Norton and firewalls etc etc... and I just get the Gameguard errors repeatedly. I can't believe NCsoft still uses this crap. I'll try a bit longer to get this figured out... if I can't, time to walk away again.
3. Extra update to this part - Starting players will get gear almost for free (do the light armor quest in kamael village at level 2). When you hit D grade and C-grade you get coupons for shadow weapons (temporarily weapons for a couple of hours when USED). Also there are the 'common' items now - they don't have a set bonus and can't be enchanted, but are cheap as hell!
Further more, Crystal shop in Giran sells B-grade and lower A-grade for adena now. D & C grade are for sale in normal shops (C-grade in Aden & Rune).
Newbee buffs are available p to level 75 (didn't realize level 75 was newbee, but hey, I didn't complain when I returned last month )
And yeah. L2 is prolly the best MMO out there ;-)
Auction House is comming next update and I am looking foward to it. I have a 2nd account with a buffer on it but for me the main purpose of that account is to always have a toon in Giran buying and selling while I am still able to play on my main. When the next update comes I will most likely stop using the 2nd account.
Make sure you are 2 or more in a team while questing. Then you can go around and grief people, that and grind is all this game is about. Got ganked 3 times in one day by someone saying I was on his spot, him and his friend. Since you lose exp when you die, I lost about 8-12 hours of grinding due to getting ganked.
Pointless game, will not play it again. Only thing you get is anger and frustration.
Well I have spent quite a few hours trying to resolve the Gameguard errors... did everything the forums recommended.
Sad that I have probably played 10 or more different MMO's since leaving L2 back in the day... never had a problem installing and playing any of them. Pathetic that NCSoft in all this time hasn't resolved something as important as getting people in the game... at least I'm not alone having read all the issues folks have with it.
23, ty for the comment. I'm already hating it as I can't even play it due to gameguard... knowing that if I did get in this is what I would have to look forward to... makes it very easy to walk away.
I know how to fix that issue though, had the same trouble. Try removing the gameguard folder witht the files that are in it. And then restart the game and it will download it again and hopefully worked like it did for me.
Yea, done that multiple times w/o success... : (
Beyond frustrating.
I started playing in open beta and quit sometime around C4. I've been back a few times over the years (more recently after the last expansion) and things have changed a bit.....for what its worth, here is my feedback.
1. My understanding is that the existing lands are still there (Cruma Tower, Ant Nest, Antharas' Lair) but essentially are a ghost town. The map has expanded several times over the expansions and the majority of the player base is in endgame (IE, NOT in Cruma Tower). So if they were your favorite because you liked the way they looked....your in luck. If you're like me and loved Cruma Tower for all the action and community.....then your going to be disapointed, as grouping is hard to come by under level 60.
2. As one guy said already, you only drop items now if your red WITH 5 murder counts. They've added a quest in the game that allows you to spawn a "Sin Eater". This Sin Eater works like any other pet, and will absorb your XP gained as you kill monsters. After the Sin Eater levels, you turn it in and removes one of your Murder Counts.
3. I have no idea how hard it is to earn Adena these days. I know you need A TON LESS Adena at lower levels. You basicly get free weapons via coupon exchange till C Grade Gear. Common Items (Grey Items) are exact duplicates of the normal gear, except that you cannot enchant and cost ALOT less than the regular gear. These items drop on monsters very frequently too. With all that said, endgame gear may still be outragous and require you to ebay....i didn't get that far.
4. I think some other guy answerd this....apparently they are adding it in a future release.
5. You'll be happy to know that Gatekeepers are free till 40 I think.
With all that said, the "New Player" experience in Lineage 2 is LIGHT YEARS ahead of what it was when the game was first launched. You will be at lvl 20 in the same time it took you to get to lvl 5 during Prelude. You start getting lvl 1 buffs at lvl 7 - 75 from adventure guides for free (including a healing cubic).
There are low level raids and instances you can run for enchant scrolls, XP, and money. There is an XP buff given now, thats similar to WOW's rested XP. Monsters drop buff, HP, MP, Vitality (XP Bonus) potions. That, in addition to the free buffs from the newbie guide make Soloing a lot more efficient than it used to be.
Also, you can now join an Academy as a low level player. Academys are sister guilds to the main guild of endgame characters set up for low level characters to particpate and contribute...basicly an excuse for vet players to take newbies under their wing.
So the game is way more tolerable at lower levels if thats what your concerned about. However, don't be supprised when you roll up to Cruma Tower and there isn't a single soul in shout range. All the players left (I think they merged all the servers to 1 Euro Server and 1 NA Server) are probably on their 3rd trip to lvl 80 and are particpating in Endgame stuff thats out of sight and out of mind for most new players.
This may work:
http://fyyre.ivory-tower.de/
Then download this file on the site:
l2_highfive_v3.rar (update: 11, May 2011) - - unpacked L2.bin & wildcard for HighFive (NA)
Only extract the dsetup.dll and replace that one with the dsetup.dll in your system map. Make sure to make a copy though. This worked for me a weeks back.
Thank you for the great replies. Man Raj you are throwing salt in my wounds... everything you mention sounds great and I really want to check it out but the gameguard errors continue.
TY for posting the potential fix above... I will try it.
Tell me if it doesn't work. I've had alot of gg error's myself.
EDIT: I tried it myself and it didn't work here, gave me a disconnect when trying to login. Did you try these steps? http://boards.lineage2.com/showthread.php?t=172289
Anybody need a Return Key or Trial Key send me a messege.
Yea, I did try those steps on the forum... none of which worked. I decided to uninstall everything to start fresh and now the link for the client download isn't working for me. Leave it to me to spend a day working on everything only to be worse off then before I started.
At this point I honestly might try to find the actual retail box for the game as well as boot up an old pc I have and see if that one has issues with running the game... don't know what else to try. Can't believe I'm spending this much time and effort on an old game.
If I do make it in the north american server in the next few days... any of you in a guild or active on the north american server? Would be nice to have a few people to chat with in game or vent/TS... probably getting ahead of myself seeing how difficult getting in the game has proved.
Are you sure its a clean client? Firewall, anti-virus...? If your using W7 try disabling UAC and firewall. And when do you receive the game guard error ?
I've had the same problem when I started playing the game again. Also took me a few hours to figure it out... I know it's frustrating but its worth it.
Running vista 64bit. My client is fresh from the L2 site. The Gameguard error pops up right at the login screen. The confirm button covers the error number so I can't see what number it is.
I too am running vista 64bit, one thing i have noticed with NC SOFT games is that I have to run them as administrator for them to work properly. I am currently playing the Aion Trial and am considering coming back to L2 as well.
I just do a simple right click, run as administrator on the play NC launcher Icon and I am good to go. Beforehand I was Freezing/Crashing on the Aion splash screen, right before you got to the login screen.
Current Games:
Enzyme, thanks for the post... I am doing that and it isn't helping. Currently I'm trying to load the game on an old PC running XP Pro... after a few days of anger - hoping this PC will work and I can do more attempts on the newer rig as my blood pressure lowers! lol...
On a complete different note... I was browsing class skills and I see polearm skills for blade dancers - wasnt BD a duel wield class?... I have a feeling a ton has changed.
If you've tried all that I guess your only option is to disable gameguard with fyyre's patch (http://fyyre.ivory-tower.de/ - which I gave you before) . But it doesn't work with the new L2 update. You just have to wait till Fyyre releases a new one.
Bladedancer is still a dual wielding support class. Not sure about the pole skills but they didn't change any class roles as far as I know.
I really recommend playing Lineage 2 atm, especially with all the recent crap being released. I've played many big titles (WoW,GW,Aion etc...) and this game actually makes you feel like your playing a REAL mmo. In games like Aion&WoW there's just to many instances. Everything endgame happens in (the same) instances. This basically kills the MasMulti part and makes it more of a co-op online RPG. Same thing with faction pvp. It's just dumb. 'OOH HIS NAME IS RED SO I HAVE TO KILL HIM'. This makes the gameplay even more dull and restricted. And lets not even talk about the community... I think Aion has even a more childish community then WoW atm. When I saw that 2.5 trailer I literally LOL'd.
The MMORPG genre is dying imo. Everything new atm is just not original and failed copies of another game. They just don't feel and play like a MMO. Everything is so restricted. And if thats not enough... All hyped up MMO's end up with a horrible community.
I don't say this game is perfect but with the limited offer there is on the market this one wins it for me by far. If you like PvP you can't go wrong with this.
Cold, you on Chronos server? My old pc was the ticket... lol... apparently old game likes old pc..
can I get your char name... would be nice to know someone in game...
Off to character creation!
Nice Sorry, I play on Naia myself. Try looking for a good clan on the official forums.
oh man i have no idea, haven't played in ages. Last thing I remember was that I had a lvl 40 something Paladin, with a samurai sword, some type of plate armor with black and white checker marks, and matching shield. Damn, been forever...even worse I am really thinking about resubbing now due to this thread lol!
anyone know how the bot population is? is the market still outrageously overblown?
Current Games:
Bots are gone and the market does not start to get tough till S Grade. Your Paladin seem to already be in Top C Full Plate so you should be fine. Let me know if you need a Return Key.
