FFXIV Materia and Job system (poll)

JOB SYSTEM

The current thinking is to have one job for one class. So for example, if you are a gladiator, the job you could unlock would be paladin, etc. Right now, we can't give any further details about the possibility of having multiple jobs per class. To try and stave off the coming flood of "So if gladiator becomes paladin, then what will xyz class unlock?" You'll have to stay tuned for more details in the future!

MATERIA SYSTEM

By using the armor and weapons that you equip yourself with, you will generate "attachment points"* and when your attachment points reach 100% you will be able to convert them into "materia." This is known as "materia conversion." "Materia" is a crystallized form of the weapon and armor’s stats that the player has used and formed an attachment to. During the materia conversion process, there will be fluctuations that result in NQ stat materia, as well as HQ stat materia, even when using the same type of item. However, even the NQ stat material will have beneficial stats. Also, you will be able to purchase and trade materia freely. Crafters will be able to utilize the catalysts that gatherers obtain and attach a single materia to an item (there is no chance of failure). The materia you will be able to attach will depend on the type of weapon and the type of stat that matches the equipment slot. There are a variety of different combinations of materia that can be attached to each equipment slot’s item, so each player will need to decide what they want to pursue. In addition to this, you will also be able to remove materia from items that have had materia attached to them. However, upon removal you will lose the materia, so you should probably only remove it when you definitely have a better upgrade to replace it with. Finally, rumors tell of a forbidden technique with a high risk of failure to attach another materia to an item that already has a materia attached to it…

Both of these quotes came from the XIV's official forums Dev Tracker, so the information is legit. Reading these gave me the urge to go out and buy XIV and a PC controller, since I have so much fond memories of XI. This info change your opinion of XIV? Having never played it, I can't say how dire the situation is at the moment, but it seems SE is doing everything possible to salvage the game. That, and it's F2P at the moment, making the option more tempting.

All I can say is this is disappointing. I was hoping they were going back to FFXI's job system.

I'm not saying it was perfect, but that early MMO got it closer to "right", imo, than the hundreds of games since.

RIFT's job system is pretty good too.

Spec'ing properly is a gateway drug.

I think they are going for something new, that hasn't exactly been done before, and in that I applaud them.

All I can say is, dont knock it untill you try it.

Bought the game and I must say it is pretty decent now. The game just needs more people.  Crafting seem a bit of a grind but totally worth it.

I bought 2 collectors editions back at release and a few of my guildmates bought the game as well. We were really excited for an EQ1 type mmo. A challenge, group oriented, similar to the original FFXI

What we got was a game that pretty much required soloing and grinding in extremely unpopulated (mob wise) zones. Penalized for grouping, 0 dungeons, no group content, and other than your 8 combat and 8 crafting quests once every 36 hours not much to do.

Has any of this been rectified?

Are guild leves still the only content and still on a 36 hour timer?

Are there any dungeons or other group content yet?

Have they made selling items any less of a pain in the ass or is it still a massive ordeal to get items listed in the right ward and hope to god someone buys them so you can clear out inventory space?

Is the game still free? I know it was in January when I last checked in on it.

I agree with the person above

    FFXIV has 3 problems:

    1) No group content

    2) Solo content is a grind

    3) That awful interface

    Very disappointed

Luckily Archeage is around the corner

There are dungeons AFAIK, but only a few. They are non-instanced.

I like the look on materia system it just the matter on how they're gonna implement it.

I agree time limit on on guildleve is pretty much gay. They should remove them a long time ago, but new patch offers new quests (other than that 8/8 combat/crafting quests).

    yeah thats pretty much it.

Had one of my guildmates who literally couldnt handle the game based on the interface. We'd start playing and just by the sound of his voice you could hear him slowly get more and more frustrated over a 10 - 15 minute period of time before the "Hulk" would come out.

All jokes aside the game is absolutely gorgeous and has the possibility to be something great. Its just sad that they literally went with a console ui for the pc croud and then ended up post poning the console port I believe indefinitely.

I checked in every few weeks till around december, then tried it again after the content patch in jan. They kept talking like they wanted to make major changes but I never saw anything really "major" come down the pipe.

It was like the house was on fire and they were trying to keep it at bay with coffee cups of water. When they needed to get out the hoses and get to town.

Has anything major changed since january?

More incredibly easy NMs, some more tweaks to targetting and other things, and addition of side quests that are completely ignorable (objectives are the same as leves, you get no SP or drops, and the rewards are rather meh - main focus was some more lore through the quest text).

So no, not really anything has changed. UI may run a bit smoother, I honestly haven't noticed. Major additions are supposed to come this next patch (1.18) with auto-attack and the start of the full combat overhaul, and then major content to be added after that.

Though at this point, I'm not really expecting too much.

With the traditional FF jobs (summoner, white/black/red/blue mage...), the fixes for the battle system they announced and some more cities and zones, I'd be content. That "materia" thing doesn't sound too bad, as long as it doesn't involve a RNG...

Sounds exciting to me, im glad they are staying on track to get the game up to the standards it deserves.

What would make me happy is if they change the way the client and servers handled combat. When I played, my quests would update my kill count even before my spell animations would go off. It was nearly impossible for me to react to combat because I'd take damage before the mobs animation would go off.

    Not enough.

Fortunately they aren't stopping there. You also aren't explaining these systems in enough detail. You also make it sound like these are the only things coming in the near future. Why not list them all?

This is all that we know about the systems so far. It was going by a dev post each, containing little info.

That, and the rest of the big things coming in the near future are in the topic that covers Letter from Producer 10.

At least you could have explained the function of the job system better. Classes are tailored for solo purposes and have a wider range of skills and roles to perform in, jobs are more specialized versions of classes with a more limited (but unique) skill set and a certain role, being much better suited for parties.

Again, like I said, eachw as a copy paste from the dev tracker. If I wanted to go into full details, I would have.

Which is exactly why they're probably going to change the name of it. People hear "Materia" and automatically think FFVII.

Why not? It's about damn time to implement the best of FF titles so far into one grand online title. VII chocobo breeding for extra mount types which can travel to some specific terrain for epic hunt. VIII card game to earn fluff/vanity item or even some rare resources, epic quest such as VI opera scene...Then in 10 years they would collect all the goodies from XIII (if there is any) upward to make FFXXI online. Come on SE, you're never short of idea.

It's already been confirmed it will not be called Materia once it's in game, they're just calling it that to get fans hyped up (and so they have something to compare it too).

I'm glad they are making updates and adding new stuff, I really am. But, for me to return there needs to be content, and then some more content. I didn't have a problem with the job system, I actually kind of liked that aspect. What I didn't like, which was mentioned, was the fact that the only thing to do was guidleves over and over, and when you can't do that you gather or craft for a bit, and that was pretty much it. I always just felt wanting more, plus the fact that pick up groups rarely happened.

I still keep my eye on the game though and if it ever gets to the point where I feel like it's got enough for me to do I'll gladly return.
