General: E3 2011: Defiance Impressions

Trion Worlds is stepping out with Defiance during this year's E3 in Los Angeles. MMORPG.com Industry Relations Manager Garrett Fuller made sure to head to Trion Worlds' booth post haste on Day 1 of E3 to take a look at Defiance. Check out Garrett's impressions of the Syfy - Trion Worlds effort. Let us know your thoughts in the comments.

Our first appointment at E3 for MMORPG.com was with Trion and SyFy Channel’s Defiance MMO. For starters Defiance crosses all three platforms so the game will be playable on PS3, XBOX and PC. The game plays as a third person shooter with MMO progression in a persistent world. Defiance definitely sets the standard for an MMO that combines so many amazing elements it is exciting to watch the game grow from this early stage.

"There is also a chance that players will be mentioned on the show as well."

Eh, I can't wait to see a couple of xXxSephiroth206 in the TV show ;)

In all seriousness, looks interesting enough. Will be interesting to see if Trion have found another mine of gold, or just a pile of fool's gold.

This looks all well and good, but when can us mere mortal gamers get our hands on this game... sometime around 2020?

I'll get excited once I know I have a realistic chance of playing.

So they think mixing PC players in with the console players in a shooter game is a good idea?  Christ who made that decision the PC gamers will wreck the console users with better controls... unless they plan to release the console versions with software that supports Mice / Keyboard that is.

Overall I think the world needs a good shooter MMO... however in saying that with them focusing on consoles above the PC this might be doomed to fail from the start.  Console ports to PC always end piss poorly.

Have to wait to see how this game plays out, but multiplatform games so far have had horrible UI's.  If you have a bad UI it can really ruin the playability of a game, especially in a MMO.  If the UI and chat system is anything like we got with SOE's hero MMO this game will not do well on the PC.

Looks and sounds great, but hard to believe a console MMO will satisfy PC gamers.  Having to deal with console limitations when you are on a PC isn't acceptable.

They'll probably do aim assist for console players in an attempt to level the playing field.

This isn't a global cooldown strat like MMO where you select skills on a hotbar.  This is a FPS MMO.  I don't see why consoles and PC's can't mix.  The UI that is normally a problem won't be with an FPS.  Look at Call of Duty or any other FPS that spans consoles.

The only question will be the hit boxes, the auto aim built into consoles, etc.  So many naysayers of what is a great thing just because other companies have done it poorly in the past.

ProfRed - that's not really the issue. The issue is that mouse precision in gaming is much better than with a controller. For example.. if you were to try and play a game like counterstrike with the best console controller players vs the best mouse gamers, the mouse gamers will win hands down. I promise you this. I play both, and having a mouse and keyboard controls are so much better and easier to use.

The only major problems I forsee are

    1.  Hardware limitations of the consoles making them limit the amount of people you can have on screen... which means instances.

    2. Controls, M/K will always dominate a controller.  To avoid this they need to consoles to support M'K as well as the PC versions.

    3. Every FPS realies on communication, how are they going to handle people using their voice to chat over the platforms? Again PC players have the edge with Vent / TS3.

If they use a system similar to what FFXI used where you render the scene based on the quality of the hardware and it scales dynamically then it would work with most pc's and any console without limiting it.  In FFXI even if 500 were on screen you may see the closest 5 or 6, or the closest 50 based on your hardware.

If they add a hint of auto aim/aim correction for consoles like what Call of Duty uses then console players can compete with PC players and in some cases would even have the advantage.

Most console players have a headset of some kind, and all of them have speakers.  If you simply have party and guild chat channels built in then there would be no problem with chat.  I would love to see proximity voice chat though where annoying players could be ignored/muted and if enough people ignored/muted they would be muted for say 24 hours.  You could do some pretty cool stuff.

They are going to have multiple servers, the PC people will not play with the Xbox or the PS3 people. Aside from the agreement issues between the two console developers, the PC people would wipe the floor with the console players. Not because they are better but because the keyboard/mouse combo is nearly perfect for playing a FPS.

Trion has proven their technical ability, and their ability to read a market and provide something that the market wants (even if it's not what the people on these particular forums want) so I'm looking forward to see how this turns out.

I don't expect it to show up for a million years though.

I can not remember winning or losing a single debate on the internet.

Pretty neat concept. I hope they offer the option for the player to zoom in and use a 1st person perspective to control thier characters. I know most MMO players prefer 3rd person but I absolutely hate it.... particularly for FPS/gun fight style MMO's. Being in 3rd person just doesn't feel right for that type of play. One of the things I really hated about TR.

Other then that it sounds pretty cool....will have to wait to see what implimentation is like.

"dynamic events, similar to what we have seen in RIFT" doesn't sound good.

    The rest, I like.

This is good news. Finally we get a company they grows a set and does something different than everyone else. Can't wait to see some gameplay.

Trion released Rift with maybe 25% of the content it really needed for long term success. Syfy is notorious for stingy budgets, so don't expect too much capital coming into development from them.

Trion is great at making an MMO that looks good at launch and holds it's luster for a few weeks, but I have little confidence that they can produce a game with long term potential.

Looking for Syfy on Ask and it's a sch-fi Us television channel. It's right? BTW Rift needs a lot of end-came contents and they are doing a MMOFPS (such as Global Agenda, Tabula Rasa and many more great blockbuster MMOs? They are niticed that both EA and Activion should develop a persistent world for their famous multi platform FPS (Medal of Honour and Call of Duty)? There are many ways to failure, this one seems a good one.

I tend to think the opposite: Rift launched with all that's needed for a long term success.

I would just note it says it will play as a third person shooter so the mouse/ consol controls might not be so much of an issue

I also sounds like there will be seperate servers for each platform.

Maybe instead of ‘for’ he meant ‘after’? good grammer please.

“Defiance looks incredibly impressive and truly pushes the next generation MMO.”

What generation are we on now? 1000? :D

Nice review all the same and he made a decent selection from E3 to look at.

the next multi platform MMO where the pc players don't get screwed over for the xbox players and ps3 player will be the first one. The only reason to have all 3 in one game is money, so i won't have my experience watered down or even worse wrecked so they can make some more money off console gamers.
