Pawn Stars ...I dont know if anywone watches this show

I really enjoy the history of the items people bring in but I get tired of watching these guys S*** people .Tonights episode with George Stepanopolous was the last straw for me.

Why you ask ? I have watched every episode or almost all of them and the pattern is if you bring in low value items like under $100 they might give you a better deal and higher percentage of that item (example: an item worth $100 they offer maybe $75 or even $80 for close to 80 % value)

On other side you bring items worth thousands say $20,000 for instance where there is much larger profit margine built in they may offer you $8k to 10K for over %50 profit margin ,so there is higher profit margine  in amount and percentage. This is a greedy business model and they do know how much they can get for items

The guy with the lincoln Rick stated was worth $150 k to $175 k on tonights episode ,Rick says on the side narration It needs 5 or 10 K restoration work then Lowballs the by saying $80k...WTF?!

Before anyone starts I know this is a PAwn Shop but the dont specialize them self as a Pawn store and I know they are in a City that allows an enviroment that allows them to do this ( ie..Las Vegas and Gambling Bug with people that trade in nest eggs for quick cash).

They are not consistant with their pricing plus the administration work required for cheap as well as expensive items. The George Stepanopolous crap where they cut him a good deal for the Ernest Hemingway book when he makes probably 10 to 20 million a year while someone making $20 to 30 K a year who is a nobody and  may have lucked up and found an item worth thousands their grandparents left them, they will stick s D*** in .Sorry no nice way to put it.If it was seldom it might be ok but this store is pretty much their MO from the long time watching it.

Buyer beware and if anyone does have anything truely valuable dont take it to these people. They make their money off of gambling addicts and Naievity

You do realise that for every "Sweet Deal" there are Bad ones to off set that right? Hell, I bet Chumm Lee has screwed them a few times. Besides, there is nothing wrong with Profit. Just because you got to see the sweet deal, Dosent meen that you will see the Crummy onee or two that they lost their shirt on.

Yep I also know that Chumlee bought a $150k Maserati per TMZ and he is supposed to be a low on the totem pole peon worker.I am sure they are not paying him that its the contract with the History channel

Nothing wrong with profit but if you read post Imade they consistantly do this..How does that saying go ...is it ,I know you are going to make a profit from me but not ALL your profit from JUST me? Hehe

Its a Free country people can do what they want but I dont see other shops doing this extreme pricing

edit* I also I think the Gomer Pyle  thing from Chumlee is just an act.No way they would let someone with Borderline functioning intelligence be responsible for what could be $1000's of dollars of sales. Its a reality show and is scripted like I am sure all of them are to increase viewership ...ie.. Jersey Shore...No way they would let people like that own their own hit the streets with that level of idiocy

Its a barter based business so pricing on items is never consistent its based on base value and their feelings that day. shrug

I think chumlee gave them the idea to put the business on TV.

Anyway its a good show the items are neat the drama/acting gets dorky though.

But that's the point.  If people weren't desperate for money and/or ignorant, pawn shops wouldn't exist.  Rick has even said that people need to do research on their stuff, but it's like with "Antiques Roadshow," where they just bring in random stuff and say "what's this worth?"  Except they're asking the buyer.  Which makes NO sense.  So they deserve to get rolled, really.  And they always justify their low prices by saying "this isn't retail, I have to make a profit."  But basically they give you 50% of the estimated worth.  I saw one episode where this guy has an thing worth an estimated $10,000 or whatever and they offer him $2500 (I think).  It was low, whatever it was.  And the guy took it.  Who does that?  That just means you're so lazy you don't want to sell it yourself through reputable channels.  Even if there was a cost to do that, I bet you'd make better money.  So it's really the customer's fault.

By the way, I stopped watching the show because it's really boring.  It's always the same.

Go to your local pawn shop and see what kind of prices they give you. The guys on Pawn Stars offer much better than any of those guys would ever do. I've taken a couple things to a pawn shop in my life and the pirces they offered were so incredibly low, I bursted out in laughter. Something worth $500, they would say something like $20.

I'm not sure what it all matters anyway, Pawn Stars is completely scripted. A cousin went to the actual shop and the workers there freely told her that. Rick, Chum, Big Hoss, and the Old Man, NEVER step foot in the actual pawn shop. What you see is a set.

That's a little bizarre.  I mean, usually when you have someone who never actually shows up to their business it's because they oversee a lot of regional or national or international operations and they're too high up to be bothered by day-to-day operations.  You're telling me Chum Lee fits that bill?  Seriously, I'm always amazed he shows up to work with his pants on.

    It's Television.....

    It's called "Reality" TV.

I like the history on the show, especially when they bring in experts.  I also like some reactions to the really bizzare items.  Beyond that, it's a TV show.  I never trust TV to really show the truth.  I've been behind the scenes myself on a lot of "scripted sets" that try to show a "day in the life of" scenerio where nothing really happens the way it does in front of the cameras; the day-to-day routine is just too boring to show in TV.

I still watch the show if/when I can... but I'll admit that the big, fat waste of space that guy calls his son pisses me off on many different levels.  "Bigg Hoss"...?  "Dumb F***" sounds more fitting.

OP you're ridiculous...it's a business, they need to make a profit...they don't make a profit on every single thign that they buy/sell so they need to make sure they maximize profit POTENTIAL.  They don't rip people off by any means...in fact in one episode a woman brought in a faberge brooch and was asking 2k for it, and instead of letting her sell it to him for 2k he told her that it was worth much more and offered her like 15 grand for it.

People know what they're getting into when they go to pawn shops, these guys are trying to make a profit, period.

The show itself has a really boring format though, it's pretty predictable what's going to happena nd I really watch it for the history of the items.

Your argument is like a two legged dog with an eating disorder...weak and unbalanced.

I never saw that, although I've stopped watching the show.  But if he did that, it was wholly calculated.  I agree that it's not his job to give people value for their items.  So I'm not criticizing him for this.  So he'd be an idiot to essentially give a woman 13K more than he had to.  In other words, I submit that he is aware that people are starting to grumble about how he always gives people 50% or less of value under the argument "this could sit on my shelf for months" or "this isn't retail."  Both valid arguments, but they will be viewed poorly by the general public.  So he demonstrated how he's a "fair" guy in this instance to get people off his back.  That's the ONLY reason to do that.

I've seen Pawn Stars but Storage Wars was way better (they're only playing reruns right now).

I agree with the OP. I don't like Pawn Stars because I don't like all the unchecked tetosterone on this show. Too many tough guys working at a pawn shop IMO. I only care about object history and crazy deals people get but Storage Wars does it way better than any Pawn TV show I've seen. And Storage Wars still has competition... it's just that the competitors don't act like dooshbags

I like the show and I watched every episode. I don't think any offer is really a low ball offer, Rick calculates his risks before he makes an offer. $80k for that Lincoln offer was a good offer because there is no real market right now for old cars, there is going to be the risk that it sits for a long long time and then if he ever placed it on auction it would be up to 20% auction fee. I don't think you took anything into consideration. They are in a business to resell items to make a profit and not buy things at retail prices where they would lose money. In this economy it is harder to sell stuff, they offer really good fair offers from what I see, based on risk plus how hard the said items would be to resell. If you got a item sitting for a long time lets say years, that would mean your money was never recouped fast enough to make it worth whatever profit you got left in it after you sell it.

I like hardcore pawn also but it is on TruTv and they script almost everything and play it off like it's reality. Hardcore Pawn seems to have many episodes in which they are scripted actors. But it is entertaining.

I like the storage wars also, the new one on TruTv recently is 100% scripted show it is not reality show. Shame how much of tv has become fake reality tv that is scripted. TruTv is so bad, I hate that station with a passion. Anyone who though repo show on their was reality then just watch the opening credits the show is all reenactments and most of the show is scripted.

Well i personaly love the show. I guess what part of pawn do you not understand... you go to a pawn shop you get PAWNED....

Where do you think that expression comes from?????

What amazes me are the jack wagons that actualy agree to sell it to them for the prices they do.

    played M59,UO,lineage,EQ,Daoc,Entropia,SWG,Horizons,Lineage2.EQ2,Vangaurd,Irth online, DarkFall,Star Trek
and many others that did not make the cut or i just plain forgetting about.

While this show is ok, they definitely (like all pawn shops) are in the business of screwing people over. There is a better pawn show out there though called "Hardcore Pawn". It's a real pawn shop unlike the shop in Pawn Stars. Pawn Stars does only certain items, Hardcore Pawn lets people pawn just about anything and a lot of the people on that show are strung out crack heads trying to get some cash to go to the local Detroit casinos. It's a train wreck and why I like it a lot better.

That sounds funny, but after a while doesn't it get boring watching some guy try to pawn a VCR for $2.50?

It's a tough call. Watch some guy who wants 50k for something worth 100 dollars and get offered 25 or watch some crack head go crazy about trying to get 5 bucks for a vcr so he can go to the casino and lose his money or get more crack.
